cathay-not-halal.jpg

https://mothership.s...dogs-not-halal/

To summarize for those lazy to read, a muslim lady and friend book a pair of movie tickets online and also ordered some snacks like hotdogs. Upon reaching the cineplex, they decided to order another hotdog meal but was told by a malay counter staff that their hotdogs actually not halal, asked if can change to something else. Staff asked manager about it and they overheard manager scolding staff for telling customers about it since they "never state halal or not halal why so kpo" Something along that lines.

According to the article, Cathay previously certified halal in 2014 but their certification expired after a year in 2015.

So she posted on her instagram to create awareness to her muslim friends that cathay cineplex doesnt serve halal food anymore. so there you go our muslim friends, don't buy food from cathay if youre watching a movie ok!  [nod]

is gv halal certified btw?

n just curious a question to our muslim friends.. if a restaurant/cafe has always been halal certified, but one day they decided not to renew due to certain reasons or got stripped off their certification, are there any announcements? if not, isnt that wrong? because if there arent any, wont u guys just assume they are still halal certified?

A couple of other food outlets also never renew certification from what I read recently. Deli France is one of them?

Yes. Recently Fish&Co and Delifrance did not renew the cert this year.

it is a case of deceiving consumers if they continue to display the halah certified logo but did not renew their certification.

Just eat popcorn and drink coke to be safe.

Enjoy the movie and not get worried over some stupid hotdogs.

this reminds me of my Taiwan group tour many years ago ...

the guide was bring us to lunch when he recounted one of his group who were Muslims.

when he was bringing the group for lunch, one of the tourist asked him if the eatery's food was halal or not ... and he said no.

and it caught up to them that Taiwan was mainly Chinese so having halal food was not much of an option...

but then one of the tourists suddenly asked if there was KFC or Mcdonalds in Taiwan ? and they went there for their meals the whole trip.

but he just kept it to himself "to solve the problem".

nobody is saying that that's what happened leh.

From the manager's comment that they didn't say it is or isn't halah, I would gather they are not displaying such a cert. I think the onus is on buyers to check if they are really so interested.

I remember eating Taiwan's McMuffin(breakfast) is pork pattie.

It's always pork in McDonald's, i.e. the original one in the U.S. We're just got used to non-pork version in SG. Just like ramen and gyoza in Japan are always pork, even instant noodles.

Anyway, most likely Cathay is selling Halal chicken franks hotdog in a non-certified premise. But the original posting seem to imply something else.

Cathay organization had a Malay Muslim CEO till 2015. Then in 2017, the female managing director (niece of Cathay' founder) sold the entire cinema arm to mm2.

I will be honest, I prefer to patronize establishments that serve pork. Not anything against our Malay friends - but I just wanna try to support non-halal establishments so that hopefully they continue to serve pork.

Otherwise like our neighbouring countries, even Din Tai Fung also use chicken to make dumplings, wanton mee is chicken char siew.... sianz ah.

For halal/non-halal or otherwise, I think it is up to individual muslim - if they are very paranoid, then yes they need to do their research and google every outlet whether they have valid halal cert.

Yes my feel (LKY mention same thing in his memoirs; he was pissed off at the source which was wahibism from Saudi) is that over the last decades, our muslims friends have got more strict. Does it bother me? usually no because it is their legal and religious right.

its just my guess since most establishments will display the halal certification logo. and if that certification lapse, then they should ensure their advertising/marketing does not mislead the consumers.

Agreed.

I think in SG, there's a good balance. The halal options are there. The ones that depend on local chinese business like DTF and others are there as well.

And some restaurants don't mind adopting all halal options.

Like My Kampung is a halal chicken rice chain. It sells chicken char siew which is quite nice btw.

It's good that subway and chains like My Kampung can corner some of the muslim market share which is quite significant in SG

And still serve food that is not fried chicken, prata, Indian muslim etc.
