RogerNg_185295 6th Gear September 14, 2018 Share September 14, 2018 (edited) I frequently read that populist policy will not work in Singapore. What's wrong with such policies? Will it really ruin the country? If so, how they know it will ruin the country without even trying to implement it? Moderators Please delete this if not appropriate for discussion. Volvobrick Supersonic September 14, 2018 Share September 14, 2018 (edited) Usually policies the masses like but elites don't are labelled as populist. Those elites like but masses don't are often referred to as "prudent", "long term".... What's wrong catering to the masses? Vratenza Supersonic September 14, 2018 Share September 14, 2018 Popular policies is not necessarily bad policies...likewise.....unpopular policies is not necessarily good. Funny thing is.......the government is voted in by popular vote....yet they refuse to implement "populist" policies. So is popular good or bad?

For example, ministers take a pay cut to finance some of the country expenditure such as merdeka package. Tonyng 4th Gear September 15, 2018 Share September 15, 2018 Populist usually have negative meaning in politics. Ordinary people generally have no data access or may not be smart enough to make policy decisions so will vote on sound vibes and make poor decisions Pap use this word to characterise oppo policies because oppo say things that will sound nice to the masses to get votes And because of their use of the word - pap needs to say “cannot be populist” And now people asking why populist is bad - expecting an answer - but actually it really about on the actual policy and context of use of the word This proves the point - ordinary people usually not smart and ask wrong questions - like this case, hence gov cannot be populist. ↡ Advertisement
