Fibre TV and termination point

Sorry, don't get what you are trying to compare. 1 is wireless and 1 is wired. If you follow the diagram, you don't even need a router. A simple dumb switch will do. And BTW, the fiber STB is on a separated LAN by itself. It does not share with your internet.

Isn’t the powerline plug acts like a router or a booster if I may when it’s plugged into the usual power socket?

My colleague mentioned that it helps in boosting the signal in the room when there’re too many walls from the base router source.

Huh??? Powerline plug is to run network signal over powerline when you are not able to run it over ethernet cable or don't have ethernet cable around. It convert signal back to RJ45 at the end.

Manufacturer might throw in extra function such as wifi extender or repeater which will cut your wifi throughput by half (read up if you want to know why half). What you say is actually a extender or repeater.

Read my first reply. even if you can use wifi to transmit. How are you going to received? A wifi client need to install driver and software to config which SSID and password to connect. The STB is not a computer.

Yes, you’re correct. It’s the extender. Sorry that I wasn’t clear...

Btw, this is the video link my colleague sent to me and it looks easy...however, he also mentioned that the signal may still suffer some losses depending on how the powerline was laid in the house. Longer it is, more losses it can be. That’s why I’m wondering if a better router would be better instead. Or maybe I should impose no OPPO in my house.

get a better wife....

Oops [lipsrsealed]  :D

no I meant get a better WIFI router +/- mesh setup to improve coverage. The better WIFI router will allow you to control each of  the connecting device's bandwidth and log on/off timing via MAC locking.

Seriously....why allow youtube MTVs to hog your bandwidth when prawning is more important? :D

Been using this Asus RT AC88U since it was launched and I have no complaints about it's performance

Agree.

When I did my last reno 7 yrs ago, laid down Cat 6 X 2-4 to each room and living area all leading back to a centrally located cat 6 patch panel  and IT cupboard where my fibre ONT terminates.....I have a 24G semi-managed gigabit switch to manage the lan cables.... plus 2gigbit trunking to the Asus Router as well as the Synology NAS.

This setup is the best investment I made to futureproof  my place....up till now I have no issues with streaming/bandwidth/gaming from anywhere in my 3 bedroom place.

Ideally.. Everyroom in the house should have a lan point. Haha. If do renovation do take note.

You’ve forgotten to mention the most important HD prawning...I mean steaming...oops...I really meant to say streaming.

My fiber termination point is also near my front door.

Starhub installed powerline ethernet adapter for my fibre TV.

This will only work if you need only 1 fibre TV point like me.

Just end the TV subscription. WIth smart TV, why still need to subscribe to TV box? 1 tv remote to control all. Got Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Toggle and next year Disney launching it's own streaming app. TV boxes should long been phased out.

I bought a whole roll of belden cat 6 cable from Sim Lim tower, asked the electrician who was doing my whole place electrical works to lay it along side my power cables when they are installing the electrical points. No extra charge.

I bought the wall rj45 jack plates and termination/crimping tools and the cat 6 plugs, I did my own termination, crimping of each points. Learnt it from Internet from scratch..  :D

By end of the renovation, I still have 1/3 of the whole roll of belden cables, just use them to make the many customised length patch cables from my switch to the patch panel.

Did not have to buy any cat 6 cables for a very long time. .  :D
