Aircon Repair, Cooling Coil Leak

I'm guessing here, but I doubt the compressor will need to work much harder to compensate. The cold refrigerant is still there in the thicker evaporator coil, it's just that it's slower to be transferred to the cabin.

Similarly, I expect the thicker coil to be able to provide cool air for a slightly longer time than the thin one, after the compressor kicks out.

Confirmed that my BMW (316 96model) cooling coil is leaking. After topping up gas, the aircon is cold. After few day, when I on the aircon, smoky particles was blown out and afterthat, not cold anymore. [furious]

The workshop recommended to use OEM copper coil which is cheaper ~$400+ and more durable (at least 4-5 year no problem) rather the original coil which is aluminium, more ex. ~$1,100, though faster cooling but may leak again in just 2-3 year time.

The whole repair work cost ard $750 which inclusive labour + materials (copper type cooling coil, dryer, expansion valve) + 6 month warranty.

Is the cost reasonable?

Anyone can recommend a good repair workshop and price reasonable?

Do check out the resource folder... u should find something there?? [thumbsup]

I suggest you go with one of the posters here and go with Mark Cool. The thing about them is that if you go to them directly, it will cost you. But if your regular mechanic sends his cars to Mark Cool for servicing, there will be a special price usually. Got mine cleaned out and new some top up of refrigerant for $80.

Fresh Cool is located at Jln Tanki Air as Paul75ts mentioned. Fresh Air is at Jln Yahya Awal. Afetr you clear the causeway, head towards the seaside road. Short distance away (abt 1/4km) you will hit a traffic light. On the left is a small tower (like 3 storeys high). Make a right at this junction. Then keep going straight...pass a Shell, then Esso (abt 1km). After the Esso, lookout for signboard on your left for Fresh Air.

Hope this helps.

Went to Mova at Alexandra Village also (Same place?) The service foreman Mr Pang quote me $1,200++ for oem coil. [crazy] More exp if use back original coil (coil alone cost $1,100).

Someone from MCF recommend Falcon Air Auto at Sin Min Autocare. Mr Thomas quoted me $795 + GST $31.80

copper cooling coil + expansion valve + receiver dryer + refill gas + labour (3month warranty) [:|]

Found a shop (Fresh Air Auto Aircon) in JB. Place look big like STAR workshop. Mainly specialist in aircon not like those small shop in town ard sentosa areas.

If I go for original coil can last only 2-3 year and cost ard $1,674 (S$775)[sweatdrop]

Malaysia make but fast cooling can last longer and cost ard $1,374 (S$636)

assuming S$1 = RM$2.16

Can anyone advise whether to go to malaysia for repair? workmanship worthwhile? [confused]

or go to Falcon Air Auto as recommended by MCF member here? Anyone know this workshop and whether their service is good?

[gossip]

there are usually 2 reasons for aircon coil leakage...

1. wear & tear...

2. aircon cleaning...

- some workshops will spend a day to extract the aircon evaporator/coil to perform chemical cleaning... 2 issues here

a. chemical may be corrosive (make sure u know what they are using. we usually leave it to the workshop.. when we should really be asking/observing)

b. the actual process of manually cleaning may cause physical damage.

i'm not sure if any of you have seen the physical coil, but the fins are actually very thin (aka fragile)... easily damaged...

take care bro!

was quoted $420 to replace aircon cooling coil, reasonable? 06 Alties.

Does your car need to remove dashboard to reach the cooling coil?

How about you check a few more WS for quotes? Check those listed here in this thread, especially those specialist in aircon like Mark Cool....

Any advise whether to turn off aircon before switch off the engine or just simply switch off the engine without turning of the aircon after parking?

Agreed.

My battery man always tells me to make a good habit to switch off all equipment (including CD player/radio) in the car before turn off engine, so that when you turn on engine later, the battery has full power to start the engine. This is will also prolong the car battery's life.
