Since I am joining the Ford Mondeo club soon, I was wondering, should Ford be considered an American car or a Conti Car? For example, my mondeo is made in Germany and not sold very much in the states. So is it American because of the Ford brand? or is it Conti because it is made in Germany?

I think exceptions have to be made for the Ford or General Motors. [shocked]

Because of their organisation's size ....

Their cars can be classified as both , depending on where they were produced. Thus the Mondeo should be classified as Conti. It was made for the European market. The Ford Mustang is a full-blooded American model. [nod]

Actually, there's not even one Mondeo (MKIII) sold in the State yet. First car was sold in Germany. Mondeo definately is Conti car.

Well, the MKII Mondeos are sold as Contours in the US but the MKIII are totally Euro/Asian only, that's a pity because the MKIIIs are excellent mid-sized sedans.

I vote Conti for the MKIII Mondy [;)]

For sure conti, Ford in America can never made cars with seats like what we have in the Mondy. Their seats sucks big time, more like a over stuffed arm chair than a proper seat, maybe cater for big American bum [sly]

Well, although Ford started in the US, it's really a global brand, in the sense that their products are designed, manufactured as well as marketed for different markets. Most of the cars we get here are Conti, although there's still the Laser and Escape(both Mazda clones) So, another choice should be, is Ford Japanese? [:p]

Hey professor,

Not sure if you remember me. As you know The company was started by Henry Ford... naturally a US based compnay. But over the last 30 years.. its become a Global Brands with certain ke regions responsibile for their own development and market needs such as ...

US - has the F150, Explorer, Taurus... etc

Europe - Escort, Granada, Capri, Cortina, Mondeo, Japan & Asia - Lynx/Laser, Escape, Telstar

Aussieland - Falcon, etc...

In Singapore these are the origins of the following Models:

Taurus (discontinued) - USA

Scorpio - USA (I think)

Telstar, Lynx/Laser, Escape - Japan/ Asia

Mondeo, Focus, Feista - EU (Spanish or the Belgian Plants)

Festiva - KIA Korea

btw, the American Taurus had a dismal and short-lived sales record here despite it's best-selling status back home. Further proof that our markets' needs and tastes are worlds apart...

Actually the Scorpio was European, although I can't think of anyone in his right mind penning the huge fish face and considering it good. Maybe that American Chris Bangle in his previous life... [laugh]

And I'd really siam this police car if I saw it, for more than one reason! [:p]

Does it matter?

Most of us already have a certain impression of the brand name Ford. By considering Ford as Conti Car, can Ford be the same as BMW?

In fact, there was once most people think

Ford = Mazda

"can Ford be the same as BMW"

And the answer is yes, given time. Don't forget, there was a time when BMW made comical bubble cars, and Lamborghini was a tractor builder. Like you say, it's not so much about the origin of the car (although that's a hurdle enough in many people's minds) as the single-minded advancement of both product and marketing. Look at Volkswagen, who have good engineering combined with impeccable perceived quality and very shrewd product placement.

But Volkswagen is still playing catch up with other Conti Car like BM,etc. Maybe VW should follow Toyota.

Toyota created Lexus to upgrade himself to higher level with moderate success. Jusk said the word, Lexus, what is your impression?? nod.gifnod.gif

My personal impression of Lexus? Very, very competent, little soul, rather characterless. Then again, I've not had the pleasure of driving one. Just based on my impression of their rather schizo product range.

You don't think VW is successful? Which other car company do you know of can charge a huge premium on their products (15-20% over 'same segment' cars like the Focus and Megane) and still sell by the bundle? Toyota leads the market partly because of its competitive pricing. See what will happen if BM attempted to charge $85k for a Rolla...
