How effective is Aveo's ABS?

Hi all, I have been driving the Aveo Sedan Auto for slightly more than a week now. For a Korean made (another way of saying cheapo....) car, I must admit that I was surprised by the overall drive so far. I do not really subscribe to the below 2K rpm run-in mantra though. However, I made sure the needle does not go beyond 3K. Crusing at 100kmh on the pie is a joy. Sound proofing is one thing I like most about this car. I have driven the excel, corolla and laser before and I am pleasantly surprised that such a cheapo make could surpass even the corolla in that department. Bravo indeed to Daewoo [thumbsup][thumbsup][thumbsup][thumbsup]

 

On thing I have not tried concerning this car is the ABS. I wonder if anyone in the forum have had any experience in using this functionality. Would be glad to hear your experience. Thanks.

Just slamming the brake pedal to try out the ABS is *not* the same as in real-life situation. What I would like to know is if anyone here has any real-life experience in near miss incidents in which the ABS had been a blessing. Perhaps we could learn a thing or two from others' experience, right?smile.gif

Hi Spango, when one is about to hit someone in front, for instance the car in front stops suddenly, especially on the x'way, one has to hit the brakes. Now, if one is in a ABS-less car, it will definitely skid if the driver does not let go of the brakes. So, the best the driver can do is to 'pump' the brakes - brake hard for split second, let go split sec, brake again, let go....and hopefully the distance for a complete stop is not too short. However, not many drivers have this skill. So, ABS comes in handy. In the situation similar to the above, the driver just needs to slam hard on the brake and steer the wheels. The ABS comes into play and ensure optimal braking w/o skidding. The whole car would vibrate, I think this is caused by differential braking by individual wheel, followed by a thun-thun-thun-thun-thun sound. I experienced this in my other car, a Toyota Wish. I was in total shock by the near miss, and would *not* like to experience this again, if possible. So, I wonder how the experience is like if I was in an Aveo facing a similar situation. Would like to hear from others of their experience. Thanks.

But I thought ABS will give you longer braking distance than ABS-less cars ?

 

ABS gives you more control during e-brake ( i.e. can steer away from object in front ), but will need longer distance to stop. Am I correct ?

Mine's an Aveo HB, so I'm supposing we'll get similiar results. ABS on the Aveo works fine. Just slam on the brakes. Once the system detects that your wheels are in danger of stopping (relative to road speed), ABS kicks in and pumps the brakes for you. What you'll experience is a "recoil" (much like firing your M16 in full auto mode, but with the buttstock on your right foot [laugh] ). Many newbies get confused when this happens and let go of the brakes, causing the accident or a near miss... [sweatdrop]

 

As always, the grip of your tyres contribute significantly to how well your abs works. So if you're still running on stock 13" or 14s" i suggest you go get that changed ASAP...

 

Mine came with Yokohama AspecDB... it's a really crappy excuse for a tyre.... [hur]

If ABS kicks in, it means that on an ABS-less car, you'd have begun to skid... I think ABS stops you in a shorter distance, compared to a skidding car...

Hi TPLOH, the ABS will prevent your car from skidding during hard braking, so you just need to stay really cool to steer away from the object infront if the braking distance is insufficient. Of course, this may lead to collsion with another vehicle when you steer to the left or right. So, the best policy is to allow a safe distance from the vehicle in front and not by tail-gating, so that one does not have to steer to the left or right but just slam hard on the brake and let the electronics do the work to stop the car before it hits the vehicle in front. [;)]

Hi Maded, mine are still stock 13in Kumho wheels. Feels quite OK. No complaints. Intend to change to maybe 15in in 1.5 to 2 yrs. Only then will have sufficient return on investment. If not, the finance minister (aka wife) will issue a spending freeze directive........ [blush][:/][dizzy]

 

The stock items are quite nice, example the HU, component speakers, seat fabric, air-con. Actually, quite pleased with the buy [thumbsup]

 

Hopefully, the stock ABS system is just as nice as the other stock items.
