This is Yew Meng here. Just bought a starlet a few weeks back, supposedly for my wife. Was previously driving a Sunny. Now my wife is driving the Sunny because I find it more fun to drive the Starlet!

 

A few differences I noticed. The engine "roars" quite loudly when I step on the accelerator as compared to the Sunny. Is this normal? Also, the car's performance is also quite inconsistent. On some days, the car is really responsive, performing just like how everyone who drives a starlet raves about. But on other days, it's really sluggish, no matter how hard I step on the accelerator. I also noticed the idling rpm drops very low when the aircon is on, sometimes dropping so low the car will stall. With the aircon off, everything is. I will be bringing my car for a check up this weekend to try to solve these problems.

 

My mechanic also told me recently that he thinks my engine is a 1.3, not a 1.0 as listed. But he is not able to give me more details. So I hope to be able to join some of you guys at a meetup session to learn more about the potential of this fun little car.

Most likely your engine is a 1.3L SOHC. Most of the 1.0L ones have died of a natural death. The reason why the engine roars is because it is a carburetted engine. Carburetors roar. Old timers who have driven carburetted cars like the sound the carburetor makes.

 

Get it tuned. The idle control of the carburetor is set wrongly. When the A/C compressor kicks, the carburetor is supposed to open the throttle slightly to power the engine with more fuel. Yes, unlike an EFI car which your Sunny most likely is, the idle air control and everything is done by the carburetor.

Hi Genie, What can i do to a 2E?

 

Have not done anything major since i got her. Its been quaterly maintance...change this...change that...Its been day to day driving accept for the occasional sprints and cornering. FC has dropped to 310-340km per full tank. Initially was getting 370-410... After 1.5 yrs, i think its time to work on it. Any advise?

Clean the carburetor, change the spark plugs, use lower viscosity oil.

Yup, have to finally look into it. Am planning to keep her for a couple more years. So its Project Satine. Talked to my mech. He mentioned there are two ways of cleaning the carb. One is the diy method - spray through the air intake. And second is to open up and clean. Maybe i should diy first..?
