The car-based van segment is rather popular in Europe and that particular segment is about to get even bigger with the addition of the MINI Clubvan. MINI showcased the vehicle at this year’s Geneva Motor Show to gauge response from the public. And what they got was very encouraging and the Clubvan will go into production.

With two seats, five doors and wall-to-wall MINI style and personality; the MINI Clubvan, the world's first premium compact delivery van, has it all. With this groundbreaking model, based on the MINI Clubman platform, MINI is translating the brand's hallmark driving fun and instinctive charisma to new applications aimed at the urban user.

The enhanced functionality offered by the MINI Clubvan is based on a closed-off load area extending from the rear doors right up to the driver's and front passenger's seats. Cargo vans usually have sliding doors on the side for cargo access but for the Clubvan, cargo can be easily accessed either through the wide opening split rear door or through the right-side "Clubdoor."

On the inside, MINI removed the Clubman's rear bench in order to obtain a big, flat loading space. The passenger compartment is separated from the cargo compartment thanks to a partition that is made from both aluminium and steel. Buyers will be able to order the van with custom-built storage drawers and it will come equipped with 12 volt outlets in the back.

The powertrain and chassis technology of the Clubvan is familiar from the MINI Clubman. It boasts powerful but efficient four-cylinder engines, the familiar MINI front-wheel-drive set-up, electric power steering, MacPherson strut front suspension, multi-link rear suspension and powerful brakes.

An extensive range of “Minimalism” features including auto start/stop, shift point display, brake energy regeneration and on demand operation of ancillary units keeps a tight rein on fuel consumption and offers unbeatably low running costs.

The Clubvan will come in three engine variants. The entry level model, the MINI One Clubvan features a 1.6-litre engine with fully variable valve timing which delivers 98bhp, produces a 0-100km/h timing of 11.1 seconds and a top speed of 185km/h.

Next, the MINI Cooper Clubvan is a little livelier in terms of power. It delivers a maximum horsepower of 122bhp, a 0-100km/h timing of 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 201km/h. both the above engines have average fuel consumption in an EU test cycle of 5.5 litres per 100km.

The most fuel-efficient model in the line-up is the MINI Cooper D Clubvan, whose four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with common rail direct injection delivers 112bhp, accelerating this model from standstill to 100km/h in 10.2 seconds, with a top speed of 197km/h. this engine’s fuel consumption is around 3.9 litres for every 100km travelled.

A six-speed manual transmission comes as a standard for all models and a six-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. When the Clubvan hits showrooms it will be offered in four exterior colours Pepper White, Ice Blue, British Racing Green metallic and Midnight Black metallic.

Why would people get such an expensive vehicle (Cat A) and treat it like a van? Doesnt it make sense for one to get a Hiace, Volks Caddy, or Trafic for the purpose?
