Mazda trademarks MX-6 name in Japan
Mazda has secured the MX-6 nameplate recently and naturally rumors are now flying around saying that we will see a new coupe from the brand in the future.
According to AutoGuide, the name was filed to the authorities a few months ago and its use has been referred to as “automobiles and parts and accessories thereof”.
That said, that doesn't necessarily mean Mazda will be launching a new product. It is possible the name has been secured to prevent other brands from using the name.
As of now, there is no official information on the whether this is will turn out to be anything but if it does, we guess it will be a four-door fastback in the size of the Mazda6 with some form of rotary technology in its hybrid powertrain.
The last MX-6 was a front-wheel drive, two-door coupe and was on sale till 1997. In its most powerful form, it had a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre V6 producing nearly 200bhp. It wasn't a commercial success and the car didn't have a successor, till hopefully soon.
