2011 British Formula 1 at Silverstone: Ferrari finally wins a race

[extract] It rained during the British Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone on the 10th of July. This basically meant that racing was at its finest (subjectively speaking that is). Ferrari managed to break its dry spell in this wet race with Fernando Alonso taking the win with the usual suspects, Sebastian Vettel coming in second and his Red Bull counterpart, Mark Webber taking third. It is Ferrari

4 door coupe

When Mercedes Benz launched the CLS model in 2004, it was said to spawn a new styling element that inspired the design of models such as the Passat CC, Audi A7, Porsche Panamera or even cheaper models such as the Hyundai I45. In other words, is the CLS the creator of a new segment of automobile?   I have seen the Audi A7 on our road a few times. It was pretty sight to behold. During these encounters, the C pillar of the vehicle reminds me of a much more humble car

Past Masters: The MGB GT

[extract] In the 1990s a friend of mine used to run a 1960s MGB GT as her daily driver (a metallic red coloured one similar to the one above). I suppose it is because of my acquaintance with this individual that I now adore classic British sports cars from the 1950s and 1960s. I simply do. I suppose it

BMW 528i to bid goodbye to inline 6 cylinder engine

BMW announced that its 528i sedan will drop its current inline six-cylinder engine in favor of a twin-turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder for 2012. With 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the 2.0-liter engine offers identical power and an additional 30 lb-ft of torque compared to the 3.0-liter engine in the outgoing 2011 BMW 528i. BMW says the turbo four hits its horsepower peak at 5,000 rpm and reaches peak torque at a remarkably low 1,250 rpm.   The new 2.0 turbo unit will be mated to an

Beauty Vs Practicality

[extract] In this blog entry, I would like to discuss the popular use of body-coloured plastic for the external car body parts, especially the bumpers. I recalled that back in 1989, my dad bought a metallic blue Toyota Corolla. Folks in my generation would recall that it comes with a matt black front and rear bumpers, at a time when more and more cars come equipped with body-coloured ones. As a little boy, I would tell him,

Focus on this advertisement

[extract] It has been quite some time since I saw a full page advertisement on the Ford Focus. Hence, the Ford Focus advertisement (Refer to the blog photograph above) on The Straits Times on 2 July 11 immediately caught my attention. Initially, I thought Regent Motors was competing head on with Volkswagen Singapore (which happens to advertise the all new Jetta on the same day) with the launch of the all new Focus. However, on a closer look, I realized that the car in the advertisement is

Traffic Jam? Just Chill

Live in the northern part of Singapore? If so, like many thousands of other Singaporean drivers, you must have at one point in time felt the frustration that comes along with being stuck in congestion along the not-so express CTE.   If you do not, perhaps you might have tried driving along Orchard Road on the weekends during the Great Singapore Sale or the run-up to Christmas. Another frustrating exercise, to say the least.   But, try tackling the normal "peak" traffic in one of our neighbo

SingTel Formula 1 Simulator

For those of you who follow Formula One, have you ever wondered what it was like to drive one of these things around a circuit?   I must admit, that thought has occasionally crossed my mind. Well, SingTel recently gave us a chance to find out, when they held an event to launch their latest Formula One simulator ahead of the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix.   Media invitees were given two chances at trying out the simulator, one on a test track, and one on the Marina Bay Street Circuit.   During

The man who never returned any of the luxury cars he took for test drives

Justin W. Durbin, a 22-year-old serial car thief who is currently wanted in at least four states in America, including Illinois. Naperville, Ill., to be precise.   The bizarre saga of the 22-year-old from Altus, Okla., apparently began in early June. That was when Durbin allegedly sweet-talked an employee of a car dealership in Fishers, Ind., out of a black, 2003 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 valued at $20,000(S$24,526).   Naperville police Sgt. Gregg Bell said Durbin drove the car June 13 to Mercede

Luxury brand Maybach may soon bite the dust

[extract] It seems that Daimler AG, parent company of Mercedes Benz is getting fed up with the low sales of Maybach, the supposedly luxury brand of the group. Somehow the rich have not been snapping up Maybachs like hotcakes. The wealthy seem to prefer the traditional Rolls Royce and Bentley models rather than choose a Maybach and Daimler AG isn

Honda Insight Hybrid rally car banned for winning

Once upon a time, Group B rally cars ruled the earth. Or rallying, that is. This was in the 1980s and these cars were so fast and dangerous that eventually these Group B monsters (like the Lancia Delta S4 and the Audi Quattro S1) were banned. This was quite logical at that point of time as there were horrid accidents that claimed the lives of the drivers and navigators. The cars were built without compromise for speed and this actually made things dangerous for its occupants. Unlike this story w

F1 engine regulation changes again

The teams and manufacturers have agreed to drop the controversial 'green' engine formula which was set to be introduced in 2013. The compromise will see the cars powered by 1.6 liter V6 turbocharged engines in 2014, rather than the four-cylinders proposed earlier. The plan was outlined at an F1 commission meeting held in Heathrow.   It's thought the sports stakeholders have come to a unanimous agreement, therefore securing the future of all current suppliers, including Renault, despite their i

My own creation of

Firstly, I want to clarify that I am not here to endorse any car wash products, but just want to share with readers an efficient and environmentally friendly way of washing your beloved ride.   I do my car wash once a week, on a weekend morning. As a not-so-hardworking car owner, the process of rinsing the car, soaping the car, rinsing off the soap solution plus drying really puts me off. However, if I were to use purely water, the road grime may not be removed effectively. Therefore, I decide

Not-so-rapid sales for Aston Martin Rapide

Production will be cut to only 1,250 cars a year or 24 cars per week, which is slightly over half of the 2,000 cars initially planned in 2007/08. Several sources imply that volume could even be dropped to 10 per week but the automaker is insistent that it won
