Are you the World's Biggest F1 Fan?

The organisers of the Singapore Grand Prix are looking for the World's Biggest F1 Fan, with prizes such as a hotel stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore as well as Hospitality Suite tickets to this year's race up for grabs.   This is the second year that the contest has been running now, and the organisers have now opened it up to the rest of the world, instead of just Asia, so competition will be stiffer than ever.   There are two contests that participants can enter in, with both of

Man chases thief in shorts!

More people have been installing in-car cameras to record almost every journey just in case they happen to have an accident and the entire series of events can be kept on tape. This video is more like civilian chase meets USA's infamous cop car pursuits!   This happened in Singapore and as the description shows, the thief tried to steal this man's bike from his house in broad daylight. Not long after his wife told the thief off, he scrambled and eventually stole another bike from another house

Official A-Class 2012 leaked

French automobile website automobile-magazine.fr managed to get hold of these images of the upcoming A-class set to be released in 2012. And from the looks of it, its not a far cry from the radical concept that was shown to the world at both the Shanghai and New York Auto Shows.   While the concept had a more sleek 3 door coupe stance, the production model obviously moved toward the practical approach with a 5 door version which suggests that both variants will be offered in the A-Class lineup

Toyota Q4 profits shaken by Earthquake

Toyota has announced profits of US$314 million for the first three months of 2011, down 77% as compared to the same period a year ago. Fortunately, Toyota still managed to remain profitable in spite of the March 11 earthquake that caused most Japanese plants to shut down. Toyota's sales were predictably low for the quarter, and revenue was hurt as a result.   Toyota's profits for its fiscal fourth quarter may be disappointing, but the automaker is likely to release even less promising figures

Ford's idea of efficient commuting

image courtesy of autoblog.com   As all the techno boffins flock to San Francisco this week for Google's infamous I/O developer conference, Ford has announced that they will be utilizing Google's new Prediction API system to increase the efficiency of commuting by car and to decrease travel time.   The main uses of the Prediction API system are more for obtaining locations but Ford has proposed that they want to use the system for driver analysis, which means monitoring driving patterns and

Best Motoring's last battle sizes up serious machinery in epic battle

[extract] Starting in 1995, the Best Motoring moniker has seen itself branding one of the most watched automotive DVD series, acclaimed for its professional and knowledgable drivers and the often insane line-up of cars battling each other for top honours.   This is no Top Gear folks. This is the real deal.   While most of us have the Youtube to thank for our Best Motoring fix, the long running program has announced that the finish line has finally approached and they

Motor Vehicle Insurance: Losing Sight of the Social Dimension?

Money not enough! You might be used to hearing this complaint from your fellow man on the street, but in recent years, even the bigwigs at the major insurers on our shores seem to be singing the same tune.   As insurance premiums are hiked repeatedly, the insurance industry frequently trots out figures to show that it has been chalking up losses to justify the price hikes. The underlying assumption is simple; insurers are businesses accountable to shareholders and are under no obligation to s

Airbrushing with Aire Pro Designs

In any race with similar vehicles that are hard to differentiate, the next best way to identify the drivers are by their helmets. Hence, drivers put a lot of pride into designing their helmets. Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel for example, has a different helmet for each race with a different design.   If you noticed helmets belonging to local karters Ben Goh, Yuey Tan, Gabriella Teo, Javier Chng, Peng Malakul or Mok Weng Sun, and happen to like any one of them, then you should take s

A Prius rollercoaster?

Yes. A bunch of boffins got together at Toyota and said, "we really need a rollercoaster that's slow and doesn't even carry anyone on it!" What they did is attempt to show how the kinetic energy from braking could be stored as electricity and used for something else in say, an amusement park? In this case, they used the energy stored to power all the lights seen in the video.   It looks kind of pointless and it is considering how much effort was taken to rip the Prius apart and rebuild it as

Veyron inspired Speeboat

If you happened to have a lot of cash even after spending it on a Bugatti Veyron then you're in luck! There's another vehicle which you can splurge on, just that this goes on water.   Its called the Sang Bleu speedboat and i guess its main purpose is to let the nautical community know that not only are you rich enough to own a Veyron on land, but now you can have one to ride the waves as well! Designed by Ben Walsh who is a Royal College of Art graduate who currently works at PSA Peugeot Cit

Vettel is unstoppable, or is he?

With four races of the 2011 Formula One season gone, there is a clear trend emerging. Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel has won three of the four races so far, and all signs indicate that there will be more to come for the defending World Champion.   For followers of the sport since the turn of the millennium, the sight of a German running away with the title seems all too familiar   This season promised to deliver even more thrills and spills from 2010, which in itself was a relatively exc

Cycle & Carriage, the authorised agent for Mercedes-Benz in Singapore, has riled parallel importers with a series of ads pointing out the shortcomings of parallel-imported Mercs, resulting in advertising authorities stepping in. Subaru small cars are now Toyotas and why the new Impreza is slightly dull

I bring you readers more sad news about the automotive industry. After 54 years of doing so Subaru will stop producing their own small vehicles early next year. Those that remember Subaru's history will note that the company started making minicars at first. The tiny Subaru 360 was the first car ever built by Fuji Heavy Industries, a.k.a Subaru and now they will stop designing their own small cars but sell rebadged Toyota/Daihatsu since Toyota is now a major shareholder in Subaru.   The reason

Penang? How about an alternative holiday destination - Kuantan

When most of us end up going for trips around Peninsular Malaysia a lot of us end up at holiday destinations located along the North-South Highway. Most end up in Malacca, Port Dickson, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Taiping and all the way up North to Penang, Alor Setar and even Bukit Kayu Hitam which borders Thailand. Nearly everyone forgets that there is a highway leading to the East Coast of the Peninsular these days and a trip to the East Coast, aside from the shorter trips to Desaru in Johor is as vi

Of A-pillars and side mirrors in the cars of today

One fine Saturday afternoon as I was driving a Perodua Myvi down a steep road which banked towards the right I got quite a surprise. A Hyundai Atoz suddenly appeared out of nowhere. 'Nowhere' in this context meant that it appeared after it was hidden behind the A-pillar as well as the large elephant-like driver's side mirror. It was the angle the Perodua was sitting on the road that enabled the tinier Atoz to simply disappear behind the two items mentioned above. And it got me thinking. Have the
