Google's Street View controversy

Google's Street View is a great way to find your way around a place which you have never been to before, but little did we know that they were stealing private information over private WiFi networks...   Google's Street View cars have been driving around roads all across the world capturing images of almost every single street but they had collected more than just navigational data. In fact, they had managed to grab information from private WiFi networks including emails and passwords. Though

Alfa Romeo to stay under Fiat

Fiat CEO, Segio Marchionne, has put the rumor of VW buying over Alfa Romeo to rest for now. Alfa will officially stay under its Italian parent's wing at the moment as Marchionne attempts to revive the ever-struggling Italian luxury automaker.   It is estimated that Fiat loses over $400 Million a year because of the upscale brand. Marchionne says Alfa will have to move 300,000 units annually to be profitable. For the record, Alfa is on pace for ~105,000 units this year, and Marchionne wants to

Car Features headed the Way of the Dodo

Readers who have been diligently following this blog will recall that quite some time back I was bemoaning the gradual demise of my beloved manual transmission gearboxes. Unsurprisingly, in the months that followed that entry, the manual gearbox has been under a further and renewed onslaught by the much fancier double clutch gearbox variants. Led by VW and their pioneering developments in this field, the manual gearbox is being hunted to extinction. I fear that in the next decade, manual gearbox

A car from Brazil that's as good as their football

Quite a surprise this one. Never did anyone suspect that football powerhouse Brazil had any time to create a supercar. And now they have!   Well, apart from Ayrton Senna and Felipe Massa, there hasn't been much news about motoring or anything to do with cars in the South American party box. When you think of Brazil, you think football, coconuts, Gustavo Kuerten, sand, the beaches and last but not least, girls. Now, they've designed a car that probably looks as good as one of them. It looks unb

Traffic lights across the Causeway

The wait at a red light is always irritating. It demoralises you as you see the cars from the other sides of the junction move ahead while you're stuck at your line, waiting for the walking green man to flicker while you slowly inch your car forward in livid anticipation for the lights to turn green. Its horrible!   The second worst part is when the lights are green, you are tearing down the road at some kilometers per hour and the lights change to amber and to red which make you screech to a

Rotary engine will be missed...for the next few years

With the RX-8 sports car expected to be discontinued after the current model year, Mazda, the last bastion of the Wankel rotary engine, will be without a car in its lineup featuring the free-spinning engine. This is because Mazda is yet to engineer a rotary engine to meet its own internal fuel economy and emissions standards.   Marvelously simple and compact yet viciously inefficient, variants of the spinning triangle have been used in Mazda's cars for over 40 years. However, It

Toyota's Prius is more polluting to make than a normal car of its class

Something does not come out of nothing and there is usually a price to pay. Toyota has learned from a recent study that their hybrids, especially the ground breaking (but downright dowdy) Toyota Prius aren't as eco-friendly to manufacture compared to other vehicles. Normal cars somehow make less pollution during the manufacturing process.   This comparison is in terms of emissions of nonmethane hydrocarbons and particulates, which is emitted during the process of manufacturing the electric mot

Why can't we have kit cars!

Parked along side the St. Regis, or Hilton Hotel, there's always something that catches the eyes. Whether its a Rolls Royce or a Ferrari, pedestrians can't help it but stop and stare. Well those are the authentic cars, but since the rest of the world allows its people to build their own kit cars, I can't see why not here on this island with too many Toyotas, Hondas, Hyundais, Kias and Nissans.   The car in the photo above is a Honda Attack, and its a kit car with the chassis from a Civic or an

The easiest driving test in the world

In Singapore, we all know how to go about getting our driving license. Go to a driving school, get your BTT done, get the PDL, do your FTT and after a certain number of lessons, do the final test. And within that final test, we have the circuit and bla bla bla. All that sounds good and sophisticated with so many different hurdles to cross before getting the actual license. With all that you'd actually think that Singaporean drivers are very good. Well not so.. But anyhow, this is how a driving t

Which is faster: An Ariel Atom or a Printer?

This seems to be a rather good idea, racing a printer with a car, and not just any car. The Epson is up against an Ariel Atom.   The main premise of the advertisement is to prove that the Epson printer can print out the entire racetrack, Rockingham Motor Speedway in the UK to be exact, faster than a driver can drive an Atom around it. For those who still do not know what an Ariel Atom is, I suggest Google-ing it before watching this video. Its possibly the most extreme face distorting machine
