Of A-pillars and side mirrors in the cars of today

One fine Saturday afternoon as I was driving a Perodua Myvi down a steep road which banked towards the right I got quite a surprise. A Hyundai Atoz suddenly appeared out of nowhere. 'Nowhere' in this context meant that it appeared after it was hidden behind the A-pillar as well as the large elephant-like driver's side mirror. It was the angle the Perodua was sitting on the road that enabled the tinier Atoz to simply disappear behind the two items mentioned above. And it got me thinking. Have the

Footage of a overturned truck

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S_weEJwGNA I happened to chance upon the above video showing a 14-wheeler truck overturning on a busy road in Wenling City in eastern China's Zhejiang Province. This is a negative demonstration on the way you are supposed to turn into a corner with such a heavy and long vehicle. As you can see in the closed circuit TV footage, the driver of the lorry was apparently in a hurry to pass the traffic light and speeded through the crossroad only to overturn and dro

A reminder on cabin hygiene

According to a UK survey done at the request of home store B&Q, around 700 harmful bugs lurk in the interior of a car, and specifically on the steering wheel, gear stick and back seats. The study also revealed that 42 percent of motorists regularly eat meals while driving. According to the study, only a third of the people questioned admitted cleaning the inside of their cars once a year, while ten percent said they never wiped down surfaces or vacuumed their cars.

Peugeot EX1 sets a lap record at the Nurburgring

This is breaking news. Or sort of actually. The Peugeot EX1 all-electric concept race car has set a new speed record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife!   But before we break out the glasses and champange please note that the record is for an electric car and not the overall Nurburgring record.   The Peugeot EX1 was piloted by Stephane Caillet and lapped the 20.8km Nordschleife in 9 minutes 1.338 seconds with an average speed of (yawn) 138.324km/h. Note that Peugeot have quoted until the 1/10

2011 Shanghai Motor Show: Some thoughts on Taiwan's Luxgen Neora

Taiwan has been a great provider of automotive parts like supplying spare parts, performance parts and motorcycles as well as scooters. But they have only one proper car brand, called Luxgen. This year at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show they previewed an all electric luxury concept car called the Luxgen Neora.   What this preview has told me is that the 'cold war' between the Republic of China (a.k.a Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China (a.k.a mainland China) does not stop Taiwan made cars

Inconsiderate Driver No. 1

I was turning onto Bras Basah Road from Queen Street one day and I saw this car that was parked smack in the middle of a yellow box, in the middle of a cross junction with the hazard lights on and to top it all off, in the bus lane as well. I was thinking how on earth could a driver be so thick skinned to even do such a thing?   The driver later moved on past the yellow box after causing much displeasure and several long angry sounding horns but still remained stationary as the photo shows, in

Sleepy KPE Speeds

If you're a frequent user of the KPE you shouldn't be new to this idea that the speed limit down the entire stretch of expressway is just too slow. I know there's a whole long list of why its only 70km/h but I personally think it doesn't make sense.   For such a long stretch in a tunnel, I can see why the LTA wants to keep the speed limit down to 70 and not 80 or 90. Enclosed space, quite a few corners which will lead the people to say 70 is the 'ideal' speed limit because it will be dangerou

Team Lotus & AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes buys Caterham

[extract] And suddenly out of the blue, Tony Fernandes, the Malaysian businessman who runs AirAsia airlines and that deep in turmoil F 1 team called Team Lotus, has bought Caterham. Caterham is renowned for their version of the Lotus Super 7, a very back to basics type of sports car that offers handling and performance in a package that often weighs less than 600kg. I was surprised to actually hear that Caterham needed new investors, especially since the brand has quite a following in the U

US: Taskforce set to monitor gasoline price

Rapidly escalating oil and gas prices have drawn the attention of political leaders, including President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder. While the government can do little to affect prices, it can monitor the activities of traders and speculators to ensure that no laws are being broken. Attorney General Holder was clear that there is no current evidence of fraud or illegal activity, and that the move was preemptory in nature only.   As quoted by CNN, Holder said,

SJI International first to offer karting as a CCA

[extract]The idea of having go-karting as a CCA is not new but since Formula 1 came to Singapore in 2008 and Kartright Speedway (currently Singapore's only go-karting facility) opened at the end of 2009, no progress has been made about pushing go-karting to the schools.   Finally, St. Joseph

New Opel Astra Turbo, with a nifty surprise

Opel held a launch event at their showroom last week for their new Astra Turbo, which is a car that has a neat trick up its sleeve.   Now, the basic information you need to know is that the Astra Turbo is available with two turbocharged engines, a 1.4 and a 1.6. But that's not its main trump card.   What is it? Read on.   The clus is of course in the picture. Why would Opel want cyclists?   Because, the rear bumper of the Astra Turbo hides a very nifty bicycle carrier, which slides out l

Begone! Anti Car Mod Myths!

Even super car owners would fancy some zhng-ing Every time an unknowing poster starts a thread on car modifications, there will, within minutes, be a deluge of posts espousing certain truths, half-truths and myths to dissuade anyone from embarking on the journey to car modifications. Any helpful advice proffered will invariably get buried and lost amongst such posts. I will not dispute that some of arguments made are indeed the truth; for e.g. the fact that modifying a car can get very exp

The weather, and photoshoots

The weather of late has been pretty crazy, with searing temperatures allied with the onset of sudden heavy thunderstorms to make our lives all miserable.   (But then again, that's how Singapore's weather has been like forever, so at least it's not a new phenomenon)   Despite that though, if there's work to be done, there's work to be done. And the sgCarMart team has been hard at work this week, braving the weather to bring you guys some amazing photos for our articles, just for our readers'

Nissan Leaf named 2011 World Car of the Year

A big congratulation to the Nissan Leaf as it has defeated the Audi A8 and BMW 5-Series to earn the title of 2011 World Car of the Year. In 2010, the Volkswagen Polo took home this award. The award shows once again the importance of electric vehicles and the trend will continue in the next years. Fuel efficient vehicles are slowly becoming the core product of large automakers and a bet that can transform many companies.   Deemed a "gateway to a brave new electric world," the panel of 66 automo

Some thoughts about car interiors of the near future

I have been doing a little bit of reading here and there about the future of car interiors. Aside from the fact that I had nothing else better to do I have realized that I actually spend a whole lot of my time in my cars and also the other cars I happen to get my hands on from time to time. An average person would spend at least an hour or two in their car trying to get from here to there during rush hour or trying to get about town and that car seat and all the controls like the steering wheel,

A tale of two Rios

Kia has unveiled the North American version of the Kia Rio sedan at the New York International Auto Show in the US. The compact sedan shares the same platform as the Kia K2 unveiled at Auto Shanghai a couple of days ago but it features a face that more closely resembles the Kia Rio hatch. The chassis and undercarriage of the Kia Rio sedan is largely the same as that found on the hatch version. Similarly, the interior is configured in much the same way as the hatch, with minor revisions here and

2011 Shanghai Motor Show: Volvo's Concept Universe is quite impressive

It looks like Volvo wants to challenge the big boys again by showing us a preview of its Volvo Concept Universe top-of-the-line concept car at this year's Shanghai Motor Show. The location was chosen as China's Geely now owns Volvo and this concept car is also the first look on where Geely wants to take Volvo. And I hope Volvo gets to go places as the Volvo Concept Universe, daft name aside, looks pretty impressive. Awkward, but truly impressive.   What Volvo has done with the Concept Universe

The woman who kneeled for 30 mins to avoid paying $100

Photo courtesy of asiaone.com   I came across this story at asiaone motoring and found it so hilarious I thought I should share it with readers of this blog as well. Its about a woman who parked at a carpark with full knowledge that her car could be clamped because there was a huge sign saying 'private property' and that unauthorized parking will result in the car being wheel clamped. And she did get wheel clamped but went to the extent of begging the attendant to unclamp her car without payin
