BMW X6 gets to become a 5 seater for 2011

Most of you readers out there know about the BMW X6. BMW's crossover vehicle that is essentially a hatchback on stilts. Or if your imagination is as warped as mine the X6 is actually a Proton Gen 2 photoshopped to 1.5times larger with a different grille and larger wheels for that crossover look. Anyway, BMW is now offering it as a five seater instead of the usual four. The rear seats is now a normal looking bench instead of individual rear seats.   Beginning April 2011, customers in Europe an

Novitec Rosso makes a more brutal Ferrari California

[extract] The Ferrari California is a V8 powered Ferrari that isn't that extrovert in its looks and was built for a different sort of market compared to its other V8 powered sibling, the 458 Italia. This is one that feels at home puttering around at slower speeds, around Orchard Road, the Marina area, the Cote D'Azur, Beverly Hills and other happy shopping/pleasure/leisure zones. In fact it looks more Maserati than Ferrari. Especially its stance and posture

VW Golf goes topless

The 2011 Geneva Motor Show will mark the return of the Cabriolet nameplate to the Golf range after an almost decade-long hiatus. Based on the underpinnings of the latest generation Golf hatchback, the two-door four-seater features a soft top with an electro-hydraulic drive that can be raised or lowered in only 9.5 seconds. The process can also be performed during driving at speeds of up to 30 km/h.   The exterior styling is similar to the three-door Golf Mk6 but the Cabriolet features lower pr

2011 Bahrain Formula 1 GP cancelled!

-Micheal Schumacher at the 2010 Bahrain GP It's confirmed, the season opener for the FIA Formula 1 that was scheduled for Bahrain in March has been cancelled. The very sensible and logical decision was made by the Crown Prince of Bahrain, Prince Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who incidently is the rights owner of the race. Bahrain has been on the F1 race calendar for the last seven or so years and as far as I can remember, there has never been a cancellation on an F1 event over the last 25 y

Aston Martin Virage......?

In the run up the the Geneva Motor Show in March, carmakers are releasing a whole slew of cars and concepts to tantalise our tastebuds.   Aston Martin pulled off a bit of a surprise by unveiling the Virage this week, but after the shock died down, some of us ended up more confused than excited.   I mean, look at it. It looks exactly the same as every other Aston Martin currently on sale.   Aston Martin says that the Virage slots in between the DB9 and the DBS, but the question is, why? Tho

COE prices head upwards!

In the latest bidding exercise on 23 February, COEs for all categories posted an increase, with an average of 16 per cent rise each for the main Cat A and Cat B categories.   This comes after two consecutive declines in COE prices for the previous two tenders.   I suppose the rise could be partly attributed to a lull in sentiments from the previous exercises, as buyers moved in upon seeing the prices falling.   Or it could be a number of other factors, as several new car sales representat

TV and radio license fees abolished!

Last Friday, in his 2011 Budget speech, Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam announced the abolition of the much-derided TV and radio license fees.   The news was greeted with joyous cheers from the crowd, and no doubt most Singaporeans would be happy to see the back of the archaic license fee.   Before I get roundly slated, I guess it's best to put an early disclaimer to say that this blog entry will have very little to do with cars or motoring.   But for myself, like many Singaporeans

Lotus introduces the Elise Club Racer Edition

Lotus has released a lightweight version of the already featherweight Elise called the Elise Club Racer edition. At 876kg it is 24kg lighter than the normal production Elise and aside from a Caterham 7, it could well be one of the lightest road legal car you could buy in the market today. Of course, in the early 1980s, a Honda Civic weighed almost as much (or as little). Such is automotive progress as cars get heavier due to safety legislation requirements as well as the need for more luxuries.

Toyota cleared of the unintended acceleration issue debacle

After a 10 month long investigation the US Transport Secretary announced that Toyota vehicles are safe to drive. This statement basically clears Toyota of the unintended acceleration claims that caused cars like the USDM Camry and the Corolla to accelerate out of control. This was something I seem to have known for awhile now as I haven't heard anyone in this region that faced this problem.   Mr Ray LaHood, Transport Secretary added that the lengthy investigation found no electronic cause or

F150 truck vs F150 F1 car in the courtroom!

[extract] Ford has issued a complaint in a U.S. District Court against Ferrari for its use of the 'F150' name for its 2011 Formula One car. The Detroit automaker claims the use of the moniker infringes on its trademark of the F-150 name for its top-selling pick up truck.   In response to the legal action by Ford, Ferrari decided to name their new F1 car the 'Ferrari F150th Italia' instead of

Lotus engages Mansory for its customization program

[extract] Quite a surprising bit of news here. Lotus has basically given its seal of approval to Mansory, that crazed performance car tuner that can turn a Panamera into a vivid blue and canary yellow monster or a Rolls Royce Ghost into a really ghastly being. The photos you see here is of a Mansory badged Lotus Evora were taken from Lotus' website and it also stated that this is

Changi Motorsports Hub delayed, again

Apparently, construction on the new Changi Motorsports Hub has been delayed once again, due to payment issues.   This is the latest in the long line of troubles for the much-anticipated facility, and once again casts doubt as to whether the track will ever come to fruition.   I'm sure that many enthusiasts and motorsports fans, like me, are disappointed by the latest news, and the progress that this project is making. Delay after delay, problem after problem.   You have to wonder, for a co

New car sales in Singapore for January 2011

The sales figures for new cars sold in Singapore for the first month of 2011 are out, and Toyota remains the top dog, but only just.   It may only be for one month, but the numbers paint a telling story, and could provide an indication of the trend that will follow for the rest of the year.   Although Toyota is number one, numbers 2 to 5 are occupied by traditionally more expensive European makes. Volkswagen in particular are breathing hard down Toyota's neck, at a mere six units behind.

5 series M Sport gets the Hamann treatment

If you think that.....   BMW is taking their sweet time in coming out with the latest M5; or if you think that BMW's M Sport body kit is too tame for you; or if you know you can't afford the upcoming F10 M5 as your paycheck isn't large enough; and if you think that your 520d with the M sport body kit still looks like an 'unclemobile'....   then you should head over to Hamann for a makeover.   This kit differs from the Hamann Motorsport kit for the normal F10 5 series as it adds to t

Peugeot facelifts the 308 and some thoughts on another Pug

The Peugeot 308 must be the happiest car in the world. It has the largest most toothiest front ever to sit on a car and on some models, it grins happily for all to see with its very large chrome lined grille and its slanted happy looking eyes. But that very large basking shark grille has now been made slightly smaller in the facelifted 308 hatchback, cabriolet and wagon. Peugeot will officially unveil these cars live at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.   The 308 will have the same engines, bot
