Singapore heralds the arrival of the Mini Countryman

Young families who want a dash of chic in their choice of cars can rejoice, for the Mini Countryman has arrived in Singapore at last.   The Countryman is the latest addition to Mini's burgeoning range of cars, and is the most practical model of all the Minis yet, which should suit couples who have just started easing into parenthood, yet want to experience the coolness of Mini ownership, for the Mini brand is now no longer restricted to the free and swinging singles.   Personally, I am all f

VW may kill off their award winning 'Twincharger' engine

Volkswagen may pull the plug on their award winning 'Twincharger' engine. The innovative supercharged and turbocharged 1.4liter engine that makes as much horsepower as a normally aspirated 2.0liter engine (but a whole lot more torque) has won 'Engine of the Year' twice (2009-2010) but this little feat has not stopped VW evaluating whether they should stop producing it due to expensive production costs.   The sources inside VW said that while innovative and technically sound, the TSI forced ind

Daihatsu will pull out from Europe by 2013

It looks like another car company has suffered from intense competition. Daihatsu has issued a statement that it will be pulling out from the European market by 2013 citing the strength of the Japanese Yen against the Euro and the UK Pound Sterling have made exports to Europe unprofitable. How unprofitable you may ask?   Well, in 2007 they sold 58,600 vehicles throughout Europe. In 2010 they sold 19,800 vehicles. Quite a massive drop indeed and one that surely makes such a drastic measure like

Driving's biggest distractions

Imagine a doctor watching television while doing surgery or a student studying at Starbucks paying more attention to his coffee and the girls surrounding him rather than his textbooks. Distractions can cost lives (or grades), but when it comes to driving, its a whole lot more serious.   There are many people out there on the roads texting while driving, talking on the phone, playing with their Ipods and most of them get away with it. None of them crashed into a side wall and died, neither did

Audi A1 wins What Car? Car of the Year

Next Bugatti Veyron plans to outdo predecessor's top speed

It looks like the next Bugatti Veyron is still a go for the VW Group. And word from Auto Express is that the next Veyron model will top out 434.52 km/h , the record top speed set by the current Veyron Super Sport.   Design-wise, the next Veyron will take some inspiration from the original Veyron concept by Walter de Silva, now head of design at VW Group. That design was never revealed to the public. The car pictured here is a design study by Canadian John Mark Vicente called the Bugatti Renais

F1 to finally go HD in 2011

Motorsports fans, rejoice. Formula One took its sweet time in rolling out coverage in glorious High Definition, but starting next season, viewers will be able to soak up all the open-wheel action in 1080i resolution.   According to certain reports, F1 organizers have been toying with the notion of delivering a HD feed for some time. This winter, Formula One Management (FOM) began testing brand-new equipment to make sure that broadcasts could be made at the rate of 42 mbps. Those tests apparent

Next BMW Z4 may get 4-cylinder turbo engine

current Z4 Automobile magazine has tweeted a report that the next Z4 will be coming with a turbocharged four-cylinder in the base-model, replacing the naturally aspirated 3.0 liter inline 6-cylinder.   BMW has been rumored to be developing a new 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine to fit into its lineup for quite a while. It's difficult to speculate to what power levels the new power plant will be configured, but if it is to replace the existing 255bhp 3.0 liter inline 6 in t

ZF produces a 9 speed gearbox for front wheel drive cars

ZF, the German company that is famous for manufacturing automotive transmissions has developed a nine speed automatic gearbox for front wheel drive passenger cars. Mercedes C Class Coupe leaked!

Mercedes hasn't been very careful with their all new C Class Coupe images. Especially when its supposed to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show later on this year...   All things aside though, I think the new Coupe is bolder and far more handsome than its predecessor. The front end remains relatively unchanged from its facelifted C class saloon but with that swooping roofline towards the back, it makes this car quite a looker. The big difference happens at the rear where the over-styled and co

Careful! Road Hazards!

Recently, I spent a weekday afternoon running errands around Singapore. Before the journey, I was expecting a leisurely afternoon drive to and fro my various destinations around the Western & Central parts of our island. After all, it was off peak hours so how bad could it get? Well, Murphy's Law decided to interfere and that leisurely afternoon I envisioned never materialised.   The first sign that things were not going to be quite so fuss-free was the rain. It started out as a constant

Detroit: Honda shows off 2012 Civic concepts

Honda debuted the Civic Si concept coupe and Civic concept sedan at the North American International Auto Show, providing the first official preview of the upcoming ninth-generation 2012 Civic.   The exterior styling of both Civic concept models is very close to the actual production models that will follow within the next couple of months. The profile of the new Civic is quite similar to the existing version and I thought that the rear lamp combination of the sedan looks like the previous ge

Regulating the Car Industry

Thanks to our unique tax structure, the car typically ranks as the second largest expenditure for the average Singaporean after their house. As the housing industry gears up for the CEA and a regulatory framework, it is timely to note that the car industry (both pre-owned and new) attracts an equally large number of grouses and could do with a regulatory framework of its own.   The benefits to potential car buyers and sellers are too numerous to list. The framework would assist such consumers
