Classic Car show in Japan. Part 2: Rocky Auto 'SR311' Fairlady

This is the second of the two cars displayed at the '2 days of Nostalgia' event in Japan. This time we bring you the SR311 Nissan (or was it Datsun in those days) Fairlady modified by Rocky Auto(don't ask, but they tune vintage Nissans). This is the 2nd generation Fairlady and it was first manufactured in 1965. The car first came with a 1595cc engine SP311 type called the "1600 Fair Lady" and this evolved into the 1967 version 1982cc four-cylinder series SOHC which appeared with a transmissio

Suzuki Grand Vitara

To be honest, I found the Suzuki Grand Vitara surprising to say the least, quite enjoyable. It was easy to drive on the roads and the directness of its steering seem to be a family trait. But it could do with a little more power for better off-roading ability. Doesn't matter that it looks a little more sedate than I would've liked. But I guess it fills the void between an all out bruiser like a Land Rover Defender and something soft like the BMW X5.   Nevertheless with some minor modification

A night out with 2 Bentleys - The Continental Supersports and the Mulsanne

When you think of luxury, you'd think Shangri-la or Ritz Carlton. In car terms, that would probably equate to Mercedes and BMW. But with Bentley, its on a whole new level. Its the St. Regis.   I recently managed to get a chance to view these two bucket loads of luxury at their official launch in Singapore at the Shangri-la hotel and boy did they ooze of class and panache. The Mulsanne, which was produced from 1982 to 1992 featured a full sized luxury sedan which was supposed to offer the uniqu

Audi TT gets a facelift for the 2011 model year

Audi has facelifted the TT for the 2011 model year with both the hardtop and roadster versions sporting revised exteriors and interiors. Being typical Audi, the facelift follows Audi's trend for little nips and tucks here and there and nothing fancy. The 2011 models sport a front with bigger air inlets, a shinier glossy black grill and those Audi LED daytime driving lights which were first seen on the TTS version. All TT variants have this feature now. At the rear, we have a rear diffuser with d

Ferrari releases news on the Ferrari 599GTO ahead of its official launch

The Gran Turismo Omologata (GTO) is back. Big time. Ferrari has officially issued a press release on the new Ferrari 599 GTO ahead of its end of April official launch at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show. This car uses the GTO moniker and follows the famous tradition of ultra-fast intercontinental grand tourers that Ferrari once homologated for racing in the 1960s. It was mainly made famous by the 250GTO, which Ferrari made and took it racing successfully. The 250GTO is now one of the most collectible

Driving and having a hands free conversation is like driving drunk. Nonsense, I say.

[extract] -using this while driving is as good as having a few bottles of anything alcoholic according to two spoilsports.   Recently a study was made on the concentration of people using a phone in the car, even while using a hands-free device. The study found that braking reaction time and driving skill were impaired in almost all motorists who took part in the study. Two scientists, Jason Watson and David Strayer, psychologists at the University of Utah, located in the land of cheeseburge

Jeep-ing

When it comes to serious off-road capabilities, Jeep undoubtedly is the choice. With over 69 years in producing off-road vehicles, they should be doing it well too.   This 4x4 legend is something of an icon by itself. I have never seen any other car brand being stamped on t-shirts with so many people wearing them. My guess is that in our boxed up world, the notion of "Go Anywhere, Do Anything" (Jeep's tag line) tug deep at our hearts.   Although Jeep's lineup consist of many different vehi

Little Polo on top of the world

The Polo is like a precious stone in the VW family, small but shining brightly. Having just won the European Car of The Year award recently, the little star has just received another accolade by capturing the coveted World Car of The Year award. VW's car beat the two highly-regarded finalists, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Toyota Prius, to win the award.   30 vehicles had originally been nominated for the prize, a list that was whittled down until the three finalists were announced last month

Playing it safe in a Golf

Volkswagen proclaimed that millions of couples have made love in a Golf. Now, the words "playing it safe" in the subject title has no relationship to that acitivty inside the Golf. Rather, they refer to the fact that the VW hatchback has been named the safest car of 2009 by Euro NCAP Institute in Brussels.   The Volkswagen Golf was tested in all four catergories: Occupant protection of adults, protection of children, pedestrian protection and supporting safety and driver assistance systems. The Solution to our Insurance Woes!

Now Singapore drivers are a varied and diverse bunch but there is one thing that most of us unanimously hate - increasing motor vehicle insurance premiums! And (no surprises here ) I think I have the solution to put an end to unjustified insurance claims, or at the very least reduce the amount of complaints from drivers. Motor insurers, I sure hope you are reading this!   The major problem, as I see it, with motor insurance, is a lack of transparency. We have no idea how our premiums are de

The Mazda 2 1.5 sedan automatic gets driven

Let's look at a S$65,000 or thereabouts car (depending on the COE of course) that had recently been launched and see whether its any good to drive it or not. The car in question is the Mazda 2 Sedan 1.5 automatic. Yes, the hatchback has been around for two years and it has basically taken Mazda that amount of time to come out with a sedan version of it for the sedan loving Asians.   I think one of the reason people in this region like sedans is because it looks a little more dignified and big

C Class coupe confirmed for 2011

Mercedes Benz has made it official: the 2011 C-Class Coupe is on its way. The German luxury automaker has announced that it will build the two-door C-Class at its massive Bremen plant, which is already churning out the C-Class sedan, wagon, GLK, SL and SLK. Production for the C-Class Coupe is scheduled to begin in 2011. The C-Coupe Coupe will replace the CLC model and will likely be sold at about the same time as the facelifted C-Class four-door and five-door versions.   The addition of the C

Subaru brings back the STI sedan and its rear wing

Subaru had unveiled the new 2011 (model year) WRX STI 4 door sedan together with the earlier mentioned Impreza WRX sedan version at the 2010 New York Motor Show. The car sports the same wide arches as the hatchback and the trademark tall goal post rear wing. This brings back the look that is recognizable by almost all Subaru enthusiasts as being the quintessential Subaru Impreza STI look. I suppose Subaru has finally realized that people who buy the Impreza STI still wanted the trademark styling

Saving the best for the last - The Ford Focus RS500

Although the all new Ford Focus has been unveiled, it doesn't mean that the previous generation has become a has-been. On the contrary, a meaner version has been released in the form of Focus RS500. The 500 figure in the designation indicates a limited, 500 units production run. This fire-breathing hot hatch makes 345hp, which is 45hp more than the standard RS.   The 2.5 liter Duratec RS engine is maintained but tuned up to produce the more horsepower and extra torque, rated at 460Nm between

This is one of the very first spy shot of the all-new 2011 Hyundai Veloster coupe, which is scheduled to go on sale in late 2010 or early 2011 and is expected to replace the Tiburon coupe.   Inspired by the two-door Veloster concept car from the 2007 Seoul auto show, the production-ready Veloster coupe packs attractive exterior body style with slopping roof-line, short front and rear overhangs. The production car will also retain the Saab-style wrap around windscreen. Clearly visible on the t

New Chevrolet Cruze Eco launched

Even before the Cruze made its international debut some one and a half years ago, there were talks about a 1.4L turbo version. The talk is now over and this variant of the American model was finally unveiled at the New York Auto Show, called the Cruze Eco.   Starting with the front of the Eco, there's a new, wind tunnel-massaged front fascia complete with a class-first "Aero Shutter." Take a look at the air inlet area below the grill. During low speed city driving, the aero shutter is open. H
