Carroll Shelby can finally be laid to rest

[extract] Automotive legend, Carroll Shelby, who passed away this year in May, will finally be laid to rest. You might wonder why it takes so long for his family to give him a funeral. Apparently, after his death, there was a dispute regarding on what to do with his remains.   This dispute was between Carroll Shelby

Honda and its fearsome lawn mower

Anyone who ever said mowing the lawn wasn't fun obviously never cut their grass with the Honda Mean Mower. While they sourced the body from Honda's HF260 Lawn Tractor, this machine is all hot rod underneath.   Power comes from a 1,000cc VTR Firestorm engine which produces 109bhp, roughly 100 more ponies than most of its lawn tractor brethrens. The best part - it'll hit 100km/h in just four seconds - fast enough to put most exotic full-sized autos to shame - and has an estimated top speed of 20

Burt Reynolds 'Smokey and the Bandit' Trans Am sells for almost S$600k

Apparently, there's still a lot of love out there for by Burt Reynolds and his famous role in Smokey and the Bandit – or at least for his car. As you might have known, the auction of the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am was a few week ago. At the time, the movie star's car was already well past its $80,000 top estimate, and bidding only shot up from there for a final price of $450,000(S$590k).   That seems like a lot of money for a Trans Am that never actually appears in Smokey and the Bandit. Accordin

Hyundai gets a spot at Harrods

The latest addition to the windows of Harrods is a car. Windows which were usually filled with high quality and stylish bags or other luxury items have now been taken over by the sensible Hyundai. Which one exactly? Its the new ix35 Crossover(Tucson).   That is the last thing I'd ever expect from Harrods. What ever happened to Louis Vuitton, Chanel or Gucci? Why not a Lamborghini Balboni or a Ferrari 458? The only consolation I can find is that its the premium version of the ix35 which is bei

I don't need no Range Rover.. I have a Moon Rover!

Introducing the Moon Rover. No unlike the name suggests this is not a new moon buggy NASA has built for transportation on the moon, though it looks better than ones NASA has built. Big Daddy Customs from India has made a Moon Rover, which is essentially a Tata Safari SUV that is retooled to look like an erm, Range Rover Evoque, despite the Evoque being wider and shorter in wheelbase and height.   Nonetheless, from the pictures, you can tell it is neither horrible, nor is it anywhe

Subaru reveals the 2014 Forester

The third generation Subaru Forester has been around for several years now and it is time for a new model. That model received numerous changes especially in terms of size. It is bigger in terms of dimensions and it looks more bulky compared to its predecessor.   The new Forester now sits on a longer wheelbase and it is slightly longer, wider and taller. Although it may be bigger in dimensions but the new model still retains the overall look of the third generation model.   Subaru ha

Next BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra will share same platform

BMW and Toyota recently signed an agreement and part of it will see both automakers working together on a new sports car architecture. From this architecture, each automaker will release a new model.   For BMW, the platform will be used for the next generation Z4 and for Toyota, it will be used for the next generation Supra. But, the supposedly new platform isn't exactly new.   The new platform that will be used for the new Z4 and Supra is the same rear wheel drive platform that under

Rosberg wins Monaco Grand Prix in incident filled race

30 years after his father claimed victory, Nico Rosberg took the highest step of the podium at the Monaco Grand Prix - fighting off stiff competition from title defender Sebastian Vettel.   Rosberg - a resident of Monaco - managed to fend off Vettel till the end while Webber completed the podium despite sustained pressure from Hamilton. A pit stop strategy worked well for the Red Bull team to leap ahead of Hamilton, during the first safety car period - trigged by Massa at lap 3

MINI John Cooper Works (2015), the most powerful MINI

You’re looking at the most powerful production Mini ever made: the 2015 Mini John Cooper Works. Behind that mess of mesh grilles is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot with 228bhp and 236lb ft, a 10% power hike and a 23% torque increase over the outgoing JCW.   Line the two cars up for a drag race and the new one will scorch its way from 0-100km/h in about 6 seconds, two tenths quicker than its predecessor. That’s with the standard six-speed manual ’box – speccing the optional six-speed ‘Step

All-New MINI Cooper Clubman images surfaces

Here is the second-gen MINI Cooper Clubman: a six-door MINI wagon, so to speak, with a unique split-opening tailgate and lengthened body.   No official details have been spilled just yet, but going off the pictures here, we can tell that it’s all wildly different from its predecessor. Visibly longer than the MINI Cooper hatch is one thing to note, but that rear-end design is something we’ve never seen yet: those taillights are especially attention grabbing.   As we imagine, the new Clubm

TRA-Kyoto gives the new Mazda MX-5 a widebody kit

Finally, the fourth generation of the world's best selling roadster, the Mazda MX-5 has received Tra-Kyoto's magical treatment and boy, it looks stunningly good in our eyes.   Like all the other cars that they have touched on, the small tuning shop has given the ND MX-5 wider fenders, front and rear bumper lips and a pair of side skirts. Other must have add-ons include the huge spoiler, deep dish vintage wheels and the roll bar.   No doubt that the car is not discreet at all, but fans will

Volkswagen replaces its 7 seater

Volkswagen has pulled the curtain off its latest 7 seater at Geneva - The all new Sharan. It is a timely replacement as the existing model is looking like an antique, and the replacement sports the new VW corporate 'face'.   This third-generation variant of the model is the biggest one yet, measuring 4.85 metres long, 1.9m wide but 1.72m lower, together with a wheelbase is 2.92m long. A new feature of the Sharan is the rear sliding door, aimed at making rear access easier. The individual seat

Careful! Road Hazards!

Recently, I spent a weekday afternoon running errands around Singapore. Before the journey, I was expecting a leisurely afternoon drive to and fro my various destinations around the Western & Central parts of our island. After all, it was off peak hours so how bad could it get? Well, Murphy's Law decided to interfere and that leisurely afternoon I envisioned never materialised.   The first sign that things were not going to be quite so fuss-free was the rain. It started out as a constant

Shanghai F1 Grand Prix - Nico Rosberg's first F1 win

The Chinese Formula 1 Grand Prix in Shanghai on April 15 was an interesting race and one that Nico Rosberg won after taking part in 111 F1 races. And now that little jinx has been settled, we may see an increase in confidence in the German driver (He is half Finnish and half German) much like how Jenson Button winning his first race and then go on to winning a world championship.   Of course, the win was in a way handed to him by the fact that his Mercedes Petronas F1 team mate Michael

Hyundai chooses DCTs over CVTs

When it comes to automatic transmissions, four speed auto transmissions are fast getting replaced with more advanced auto transmissions. More automakers are introducing six, seven and even eight speed automatic transmission into their vehicles nowadays.   These introductions are made mainly for fuel efficiency reasons, to get more kilometres out of their fuel consumption usage. But, there are also some automakers such as Nissan, who are moving towards the usage of continuously variable

A closer look into the local motoring scene

The LTA recently revealed a Land Transport Masterplan which maps out enhancements to the public transport as well as road management. We look at the some intrinsic details and finds out what they can mean to us.   Naturally, one of the key highlights of the plan lies in the public transport sector. Both the rail and road systems will receive substantial boost, such as extending bus services to more areas, giving more priorities to buses, as well as an ambitious plan to double the island's rail
