GM says its Corvette Stingray's Valet Mode might be illegal

GM says its new C7 Corvette Stingray's Valet Mode might be illegal due to the privacy laws that are in place in 12 different U.S states. It seems that Chevrolet dealers have been instructed to tell owners to not use the Valet Mode from now on until a software update is available to make sure the system will be "consistent with legal requirement with regards to audio recording devices."   Yup, there are strict laws in states like California that deem the audio recording of people illegal unless

Volkswagen's new 1.0-litre engine is really powerful

VW has brought two all new turbocharged petrol engines and the latest-generation TDI diesels for light commercial vehicles to the Vienna Motor Symposium. While the 6.0-litre W12 which produces 600bhp and 900Nm of torque, is the 'most economical twelve-cylinder engine in the luxury car segment', we are more interested in the 1.0-litre engine as it is more relevant to us.   Based on the EA211, this 1.0-liter 3-cylinder TSI is capable of generating 268hp and 270Nm of torque thanks to a monoscrol

Honda reveals its Airwave successor

The new 2015 Honda Jazz Shuttle has gone on sale in Japan. Based on the Honda Jazz or Fit, depending on which part of the world you are in, the Shuttle is a stretched version of the Jazz and is meant as an replacement for the Honda Airwave and Honda Fit Shuttle. Styling wise, it adopts the brand's 'Solid Wing Face' front grille seen on the rest of the Honda cars like the Jazz and the HR-V.   Mechanically, the car is offered with either a hybrid variant as well as a normal petrol variant. Uncle angrily rips out windshield wiper of a vehicle that makes life difficult for him

Road rage incidents in Singapore has hit a new low with this uncle and angrily ripping off the windshield wiper of the vehicle that impeded his van from exiting a parallel parking lot with ease. I don’t know about you but there is something about the way that this uncle expresses his anger that makes me chuckle. The way that he rips off a windshield wiper before attempting to leave in his van is super comedic and entertaining. By looking at the footage, it seems that the cam car m

1,700km in the Ignis Sport (Part 1)

For those of you who have been reading my posts, you would have probably guessed that I am pretty fond of Suzuki's little Ignis Sport. But alas, like what others say, all good things must come to an end. With the Ignis Sport's time almost up (blame it on the silly COE system here), I told myself I had to do an epic drive in it before it goes. Epic? Unfortunately, we live in Singapore so there aren't going to be any Stelvio Pass or scenic ocean roads to drive on. So I guess Penang will have to do

1,700km in the Ignis Sport (Part 2)

Continuing from my previous post, it was already Day 2 of my 'epic' road trip with the Ignis Sport. Day 1 in Penang past way too fast and the thought of that immediately jolted me out of bed. There was really no time to waste!   Quick wash up later, I was pleasantly surprised to find a little buffet spread waiting for me. Nothing fancy but you could taste everything was very home made.     Checked out after that. (Yup, that was the only sign I was at the right hotel)   And I went around

First look at 2013 Ford Mondeo

Ford has decided to combine the American market Fusion model and the global Mondeo model into a single model. A few days after the Fusion was released at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, here we have the first official photos of the pre-production 2013 European Ford Mondeo.   Like the Fusion, the new Mondeo sports an Aston Martin-like front grille that looks to swallow up competitors such as the Passat and Insignia. The European model differentiates itself from its American counterpart with

A Toyota driver squabbles with a Lexus driver for blocking its path when both of them are illegally parked

The feeling of being helpless when you are forced into a corner can be pretty unbearable.  Watch the video below to find out what this Toyota driver did when faced with a similar situation:  What Happened? This incident happened along Pearl's Hill Road.  The Toyota driver (The person filming) went to deliver some goods and came back to a 'boxy' situation where he found his car boxed into a corner.  A Lexus ES250 doubled parked and blocked the cam car, preventing him

Do the right thing

Those who held high hopes of a meaningful change to the car ownership landscape, when the Government announced six months ago that it was looking to make the COE system fairer, have the right to be disappointed. After months of deliberation and public consultation, the only change introduced (with effect from February 2014) was a power cap for Category A. In addition to the existing engine displacement limit (up to 1600cc), cars in said category must not produce more than 130bhp.   All other p

COE cycles of boom and bust

Since its inception in 1990, the vehicle quota system has followed a 10-year peak-and-trough cycle, where the annual supply of certificates of entitlement (COEs) could vary from 20,000 to 100,000.   Even if this fluctuation does not impair the effectiveness of the COE system in controlling Singapore's vehicle population, it is highly disruptive. For consumers, the price swings cause discontent, and trigger wasteful outcomes such as cars barely three years old being scrapped.   This is becaus

Subaru experiments with a sportier Legacy variant

Subaru introduced the Legacy B4 Blitzen Concept at Tokyo Auto Salon 2015 with links to the original Legacy B4 Blitzen that debuted in 2001.     Painted in 'Premium Red', which is in the same shade as the original, the new Legacy looks much more muscular with upgrades to the exterior. It gains new front and rear bumpers, side skirts and the signature rear boot spoiler. It also wears new 19-inch alloy rims wrapped with 245/40R19 Bridgestone Potenza tyres. Inside, the Legacy B4 Blitze

Honda announces the Fit/Jazz Shuttle

[extract] Honda has just announced a larger Fit a.k.a Jazz hatchback called the Fit Shuttle after brochure pictures of it were leaked. Somehow there is a demand for a more practical version of this car, which in my opinion is already a very practical car indeed. How much more practical can the Fit Shuttle be? Well, imagine a Fit/Jazz with a bigger hatch/rear load space and that

Complacent cyclist ignores red light and gets wiped out by a Toyota Corolla on New Year's Eve

Some would say that he got instant car-ma for disregarding the rules. In a short clip posted on New Year’s Day, an elderly cyclist boldly crosses a traffic junction when the light is still red. The cyclist then gets a nasty surprise when a white Toyota Corolla crashes into his bicycle. Hopefully, the uncle learns his lesson and will heed the traffic rules from now on. Who is at fault if a driver hits a jaywalking pedestrian? According to the Road

Traffic lights across the Causeway

The wait at a red light is always irritating. It demoralises you as you see the cars from the other sides of the junction move ahead while you're stuck at your line, waiting for the walking green man to flicker while you slowly inch your car forward in livid anticipation for the lights to turn green. Its horrible!   The second worst part is when the lights are green, you are tearing down the road at some kilometers per hour and the lights change to amber and to red which make you screech to a

Chinese copycat cars

In 2013, China produced a whopping 18.7 million cars. That equates to 22.7 per cent of global car production. But while many of these models were from companies we’ve never heard of, some look very similar to those produced by their European counterparts.   Does this look familiar?   Check-out the copycat cars below, alongside the models they seem to have drawn inspiration from... JAC A6 and Audi A6 While some companies won’t let on just which car they might be imitating, it seems that JAC

Fierce Beyblade battle occurs on fast lane between Toyota Prius and Toyota Dyna

Good morning everyone! Singapore may be small, but we are never short of exciting incidents. Let's take this battle between a Toyota Prius and a Toyota Dyna for example. Resembles a Beyblade* battle to be honest (minus the spinning). *Beyblade is a Japanese anime about spinning top toy battles If you watch the video, you'll notice that the Prius was not on the first lane initially because there were two large trucks obstructing traffic.  The Prius obviously did

Lexus LF-LC concept headed to production

Lexus' new RC coupe range will soon be joined by another shapely two-door - the luxury brand has officially confirmed that the LF-LC concept will enter into production in 2016.   Intended to slot above the RC as a niche-selling flagship, the production LF-LC will retain at least 90 percent of the concept's sleek styling, Lexus Europe vice president Alain Uyttenhoven said.   "The production LF-LC will not be a huge volume [car] for Lexus, but it will bring huge emotion," said Uyttenhoven.

Man causes a long queue by pumping petrol 'machiam' like he in JB

Remember the good old days where you could bring your whole family across the border and enjoy everything our neighbouring country has to offer? With the affordable prices of petrol, topping up your gas tank before coming back to Singapore was something no one would skip. But there are some people who go a little too far to save a couple of dollars. Like this! 😂 Which brings us to video below. I'm scratching my head as to why this driver is trying to ensure that every cu

Heavy-Duty Dangers

What kind of imbecile drives this fast? The thought must have crossed your mind at least once whenever you witness a Ferrari or Lamborghini blazing past. And I don’t blame you. I’ve even muttered the (rare) expletive when I encounter such behaviour.   However, my column this month isn’t about supercar owners and their driving habits. Except for the proverbial bad penny, which turns up once in a blue moon, the sports car drivers I know all conduct themselves pretty well.   On the other hand,

130 hp power limit for Cat A too complex to implement

IT IS safe to say the folks at the automotive policy and planning unit of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) won't be head-hunted by Apple anytime soon –- if only because the American company's core philosophy of elegant simplicity would be lost on them.   Witness the tangled web that is the certificate of entitlement (COE) system and how it has become even more complicated since February, when a power limit of 130 hp was adopted for the small-car category of COEs (that is, for cars with 1,600

5 Worst People I Met While Searching For My Next Car

I’m currently in the market for a new car. "But why, Chryst? Didn’t you just get a new car less than 3 years ago?" you ask. I did, but it had 36 months left on it. Wait, you didn't ask? You didn't even realize this column was by me? Oh, OK, bylines are for losers, I guess. Anyway, yes, I was looking for a used car even though I already have a very sexy and hip Chevrolet Aveo that brings all the boys to my yard.   But that's for my family. I wanted a “non-uncle” (sorry Chevy driving Uncles!) ca

Driver tries to drive through a pedestrian crossing, triggers Ang Moh pedestrian!

A very blurry video has been uploaded on Roads.sg's Facebook page. It hasn't gone viral yet (at the time of writing this article) but, there's a massive potential for it to explode online. Help me out here people. I'm very divided about this one. It's a short 25-second video of a driver attempting to drive through a pedestrian crossing when the green man indicator is lit. This action angers an Ang Moh pedestrian and a clash of egos ensue. If you haven't seen the video, here you go
