Penang: The land of nice ol' buildings

I made a short trip with the family up north to Penang quite recently as we had a wedding to attend in Butterworth. The fun thing about Penang is that it is a nice mix of old and new. There are old buildings located almost everywhere in the island city of Georgetown and it has that slightly colonial feeling if you spend some time driving through its streets. The hotel where we stayed was a typical highrise building but right in front it was a Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food restaurant that was

Typhoon forces Japanese car plants to halt production.

A powerful typhoon struck Japan today, causing four deaths and forcing companies including Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. to close some plants, company spokesmen said. Typhoon Roke, the second big storm to hit Japan this month, was packing winds of up to 220 km per hour. The storm cut power to more than 575,500 households in Tokyo Electric Power Co's service area.   Toyota, like other Japanese producers, has become overly cautious after March

Behold the VW Polo GTI

Here are the first images of what the new Volkswagen Polo GTI will look like and it will be unveiled in the flesh at next month's Geneva Motor Show. It definitely looks like it deserves the GTI badge, and goes like one too.   The highly anticipated new hot hatch will be powered by Volkswagen's 1.4 litre TSI engine which pumps out 177bhp which is quite a lot for a hatch this size, and of course, it comes with the standard 7 speed DSG transmission. It also features Volkswagen's XDS electronic

Vaughn Gitten Jr drifts through a highway interchange

After drifting through the whole of Nurburgring, Vaughn Gitten Jr. thought that drifting through a U.S. highway interchange would be something fun.   The interchange he chose was in Texas and shaped like a cloverleaf, with the turns a constant radius. Probably not as tough nor dangerous as drifting at the Green Hell, it still makes for some good entertainment if you like watching cars go sideways.   His choice of weapon for this stunt is a naturally-aspirated Roush Yates-bui

Honda jumps into the Suzuki Alto market

Honda has decided to join into the developing nations small car market with the Brio concept car at the Thailand International Motor Show recently. The tiny city car is meant for the emerging markets as Honda states that they intend to start sales of the Brio in Thailand and India in 2011. The car seems to have edgier design cues and it looks like a smaller Mazda 2 with a huge chrome Honda grille. This look is unexpected as it looks different from the pretty feminine Jazz supermini, the most com

This could be how the new Land Rover Defender looks like

We all know the Land Rover Defender is coming and it seems like someone has managed to take a photo of it without camouflage.   Leaked online through a number of Land Rover forums before making its way onto Twitter, the photo is actually a photo of the new Defender’s digital gauge cluster.   From that digital side view of the new SUV, we can see that it is more modern and rounded than its predecessor. We also noticed that there seem to be a small side window incorporated in

Citroen's tiny powerhouse - The DS3

Although the market is being increasingly flooded by super-minis these days, the super-mini giant is still the Mini.. ironically. There hasn't been much competition until recently with the launch of the new Fiat 500 and the Audi A1. Now though, theres a new challenger creeping up its back. And its no German Eurobox, its a French Citroen!   The DS3 has just been let loose not too long ago and I'm going bonkers over it because I think its such a cute little car and with such a cool yet modern ye
