Oh No! Honda relaunches last generation's City over in China

China seems to be where old and previous models go and get rebadged, rehashed or to live on. So the ugliest looking Honda ever made, the previous generation Honda City, gets previewed as the Li Nian S1 at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition recently. I may be harsh on this Honda but I could be harsher as I also think that it was the ugliest car sold in the last decade.   Anyway, what was supposed to be a very nicely drawn (and displayed at the Beijing Motor Show) Erevus

Panamera to receive brake energy recovery system

Porsche will introduce a new brake energy recovery system as a standard feature in all V8 Panamera models starting this August.   The new technology is said to deliver a considerable improvement in fuel economy to the Panamera. In the Panamera Turbo model, the energy recovery system accounts for a 0.7 liters/100 km improvement in consumption. When combined with the new option of low roll-resistance, all-season 19-inch tires, the Turbo's fuel-economy rating drops to 11.3 liters/100 km from its

VW planning low cost sub brand

After Nissan confirmed that it will resurrect the Datsun brand for emerging markets, Volkswagen is said to be planning a sub-brand as well for such markets. In addition, VW will be offering these budget vehicles for sale in Europe.   These low-cost VWs will be built in India or China via current joint-ventures and will be sold from 6,000 Euros (S$9500) onwards.   This is cheaper than the cheapest VW model in Europe, the Up!, which cost 9,975 Euros. According to Der Spiegel, an online

Volvo sold by Ford to Geely

[extract] We have recently been reading about Saab's sale to Spyker from General Motors. Now the other, purportedly more famous Swedish car company Volvo has officially been sold to China's Geely. Volvo is most famous for their brick-like 240 series vehicles, the P1800 coupe (due to it being featured in the television series 'The Saint' in the 1960s) and very fast semi-brick like 850T5 wagons that actually raced in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) in the 1990s. Ford, the previous ow

Kia and Hyundai want an even smaller Stonic/Kona

Hyundai and Kia are thinking of adding a couple of tiny crossovers for the European market that are smaller than the Kona and Stonic.   There aren't many crossovers/SUV that small in our market but one of the more recent new ones that fall under that category is the new Suzuki Jimny that measures no more than 4,000mm.   Kia’s Europe COO, Emilio Herrera spoke to AutoNews and was quoted saying that "they are considering launching a crossover smaller than our Stonic, although there is no firm

I'm a Fan of the New Suzuki Swift; Are you?

To adopt the lingo of the marketing campaign for the 2011 Suzuki Swift - I'm a fan! And if you went down to the nearest Suzuki dealership to give this new hatch a test drive, there is a pretty good chance you would be one too!   But before you head down to the showroom, my only advice is to throw out or shelf away all your driving experience with respect to luxury marques and sports cars for those 10-15 minutes behind the wheel of this car. Because what the Swift (was and still is) meant to b

Dodge throws a dart at the compact sedan market

Chrysler announced that it would bring back the Dart nameplate for Dodge's first compact sedan since the Neon was phased out in 2005. The company is planning a slow reveal, with snippets of the four-door's exterior and interior trickling out between now and the vehicle's full unveil at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.   Chrysler said that the 2013 Dodge Dart was adapted from the award-winning Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Kristin Starnes, a Dodge spokeswoman, said in a telephone interview that the

Sian, Lamborghini's new hypercar breaks cover

Lamborghini has apparently revealed their limited edition hypercar on the owners-only Unica app. Supposedly called the Sian, we are sure it isn't boring to look at or to drive. Based on the Aventador, the car looks like it is influenced by the Terzo Millennio concept. Lamborghini fans would notice the “63” logos on the car's vertical fins which is a reference to Lamborghini’s founding in 1963. According to The Drive, the car will have a 6.5-litre V12 engine taken from the Aventad

Kitty Lubricant

Hold on, this is not shampoo for your cat or some cat food. Though it may seem weird but this is a three-liter can of Hello Kitty synthetic engine oil. The Japanese cat brand has appeared on everything from contact lenses, to tailpipes, to the AK-47 assault rifle.   Hello Kitty was created by designer Yuko Shimizu, and is owned by Japanese firm Sanrio. The character was first introduced in 1974 as a vinyl change purse. The character is said to generate more than $1 billion annually, not in

Hyundai Motor group has plans to enter the premium sector currently dominated by Lexus, Audi, BMW and Mercedes.   The luxury arm would most likely be called Genesis and include company's current rear-wheel drive offerings such as the Genesis Sedan and Coupe as well as the soon-to-be-launched Equus. The automaker, which saw its U.S. market share increase by an impressive 50 per cent in the past two years, would further enhance the range of the Genesis brand with a compact sports saloon in the l

Here's why going Electric is the way forward

With the planned phasing out of combustion engines by 2040, we find out from Cars & Coffee about how an electric car might just work out well today. Thinking of getting an Electric Car (EV) in Singapore? Well, it isn't as hard as you think it is. With the government planning to phase out the sale of new cars with Internal Combustion Engines by 2040 along with added incentives, EV ownership is set to increase in the next few years. But can you make that choice today? We go to C

Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the greenest of them all?

The Volkswagen Passat EcoFuel has recently edged out the Toyota Prius for the title of "greenest car in Europe." The International Automobile Federation (FIA) sanctioned the Eco Test that evaluated a number of cars. The winning Passat is powered by a 1.4-liter TSI inline-four fueled by natural gas. VW's TSI engines are turbocharged and direct injected.   Both the Passat and Prius scored 92 out of 100 on the test, but the less expensive natural gas fuel system gave the VW the edge. The test ev

RIP Caliber, hello Dart

[extract] The Dodge Caliber was on sale in Singapore for a while but was unloved by Singaporeans. It seems that the Caliber received similar sentiments from the rest of the world such that Chrysler Group has finally ended the production of the slow-selling hatchback after almost six years.   The Caliber hatchback was launched in early 2006 as a replacement for the Dodge Neon sedan and coupe models. Annual sales peaked at 101,079 in 2007, but soon fell to 84,158 in 2008 and just 36

The Heavy Vehicle Nightmare

Not-so-rapid sales for Aston Martin Rapide

[extract] Aston Martin will reduce the production volume of the Rapide saloon in order to match supply with a decreased demand. Production will be cut to only 1,250 cars a year or 24 cars per week, which is slightly over half of the 2,000 cars initially planned in 2007/08. Several sources imply that volume could even be dropped to 10 per week but the automaker is insistent that it won
