I was sitting in a chair at the reception area of a dance academy waiting for my daughter to finish her dance lesson when I realized why Volkswagen never rocked my boat, the GTI included. As I wrote elsewhere a few years ago, the reason I thought the GTI was not a fulfilling car to own was that the Mark5 Volkswagen looked too much like a mini MPV instead of a stonking hot hatch. When you parked it beside to its cousins the Audi A3 or the Skoda Octavia or even the larger sized A4, you

can any of such auto blogs be checked b4 putting up for others to read? the english of some blogs, esp this one sucks a lot.

to begin with, there is no such word as"irregardless". morons...

Link to comment

Irregardless is considered nonstandard because of the two negative elements ir- and -less. It was probably formed on the analogy of such words as irrespective, irrelevant, and irreparable. Those who use it, including on occasion educated speakers, may do so from a desire to add emphasis. Irregardless first appeared in the early 20th century and was perhaps popularized by its use in a comic radio program of the 1930s.

the first sentence of the passage 'I was sitting in a chair at'

Please tell me how you sit IN a chair? It should be 'sitting on a chair'.

so hilarious....all commenting about spelling mistakes while no one comment about the content of the article.

Back to topic, but it's all about preferences, your article merely talks about your dislike for VW cars....esp GTI.

In fact GTI is the only car in the VW lineup that I really like, esp the Mark V...Any I've yet to see the GTi resembling any MPV in the market as described by you, okay maybe perhaps the Honda Stream comes a tad close but Stream's design is suppose to be more on the "sportier" side.

Personally i think this comment is quite good. the only 2 point that i will argue is this 1) VW to Audi. And 2) VW to Proton.

1) Comparing VW to Audi is like comparing Toyota to Lexus. Of couse Lexus and Audi is better right? Further more, not everyone can buy a Audi. Dispite the fack that VW is a ppl car, it is still a car that is better than most of the Jap or Conti of the same standard.

2) Yes Proton and VW are made for the masses, but comparing VW to Proton, we are insulting the C0-founder of VW Prosch Owner. Being a PPL Car, It is still pushing out top quality car and engine that after refining will past to Audi. Comparing to Proton, which till now is still getting other ppl engine and use with not so appealing Exterior design.

to let people understand the content of an article better, the command of language must first be of certain standard, which i dun see in this auto blog.

where isnt there a QC in place?

Golf...even the GTI is meant to be a people carrier first, hot hatch second and VW has designed/built it as such. The GTI is a grocery getter in Europe and US, driven mostly by "aunties".

Sirocco is nice as you mentioned but you imagined that some future Audi coupe will be better? That is quite a poor comparison, especially with an imaginary coupe.

Passat may not have the best look but you should see the Passat CC.

Well written blog entry with an alternative view on Volkswagen.

Singaporeans always think that Volkswagen is continental, so its better, more premium. If one were to look closely, its OMV is super low. In Germany. Volkswagen is just a people-carrier. A simple no-frills car.

With all due respect to the author of this article, I honestly hope you have driven a GTI before writing this. Furthermore, the TT is about 70K-80K more than a GTI (which means higher expectations better be met). No doubt VW may be a "people's car" in Germany, but it is a pretty darn good "people's car", I might say (you will understand what I mean if you have driven one). Oh and one more thing, to actually say that it is "no more better than a Proton", just shows people how ignorant one can be.

Owning a Volkswagen car in Germany is just like owning a Proton car in Malaysia. Nothing special.

But owning a Volkswagen car in Malaysia is something la... [laugh]

Yes .I've driven a gti before. Yes. It is a good FWD car especially with that DSG gearbox. But I still got issues with the Mk5. From the too tall roofline (as stated in the article and thank you for the mk6) to the hard & slightly low rent plastics (Even VW admits to spending more of the budget on the suspension than the interior - which is good but you tend to spend time in that interior) and the build quality. Once, the Head of Audi for Malaysia pointed out a few misaligned panels in a GTI at the VW showroom (then part of EUROMOBIL's Audi hangar in Shah Alam, Selangor). I suppose its more of a design thing with VW. And I'm not buying it.

Buying a Volks is different from buying a proton? What kind of ignorant fool spews that kind of stuff? Both may have started out in that way, look at volks now. It may not be as

"luxurious" as its audi counterpart. Premium is a word used by people who do not know cars at all.

Comparable to proton? Have u ever seen or sat in or driven the car with a DSG gear box? Engine of the year? No offense to proton owners but to compare the VG to a proton just takes away all credibility and respect towards the writer. What a retard.

Saying the Roc WILL NOT be as good as a future Audi coupe is like saying your daughter's dancing skill sucks cos she will lose out to a future better dancer. How does that feel?

You want more?

Read about branding and brand management before you compare apple with oranges. Just cos you are called Genius Tan doesn't make you automatically a rocket scientist.

Man, you are weak!

Wonder what car you drive... I sense a tinge of sourness ...

Nothing wrong with alternative views. Well written blog but with extreme preference.

I would be buying the GTI anyway, that's all i could afford for now.

Alternative views are fine and very welcome in blogs. But poor writing and grammar aren't, when it's a blog meant to be read by many.

totally agree. i hope auto blogs in future will be checked, at least for spelling and grandma mistakes.

Firstly, my hats off to the writer for boldly stating his dislikes about the VW Golf and stating the obvious fact that a lesser person (oddly most malaysians and singaporeans) do not know or refuse to accept.. that VWs are considered the 'people's car' and is meant to be that way.. yes, if that's news to you, then do a search on the history of VW.. and you will know that Audis are supposed to be the more premium marque among the two...

So, i have to ask the harsh respondents here.. do u guys drive a golf or vw? i reckon u do.. and that's probably why you're pissed... well, that's too bad because it seems to me the writer stated nothing false about vws... yes, they are the people's car, and yes they are meant to be a lower class than an audi..

Defjamkick,

U too must drive a vw rite? or maybe plannnig to buy a Roc (im guessing that's a Scirocco). It's funny that you criticize the writer about his knowledge of branding and brand management when it's obvious that you know nothing about the VW Group hierarchy... or branding in your vocab... and calling people weak simply says alot to your credibility...

Carer,

U must be mistaken that this is a website for Oxford or Cambridge .... or did u just recently discovered the internet and blogs? it's a blog! again... it's a blog! not a paper publication, or a white paper document (i hope u know what that is too)... blogs and forums are not required to be error free.... as long as u get the writer's point... then it's good enough.. it's getting the message across is what matters... and u should know that in the www everybody is entitled to their opinion.. or are you a communist? U write about better command of the language and QC yet in one response u used the phrase "full of s--t".. hahh... in your face...

Come on guys grow up .. and tho i agree that VW makes good fast cars.. audi just makes them better.. with a more overall package of power and luxury..and that's my opinion.. if u dont agree... then too bad for u....

Good light reading :)) Well written with good points and personal views.

Guys, the writer was merely stating his own personal views and comments. It's understandable if you get slightly offended if you drive a GTI or any other VW but the point is he was BLOGGING abt his views. "one man's poison is another man's meat. They're his opinions and nobody is forcing anybody to agreed with them. It's just like Fifth Gear and Top Gear. Those guys rave and ridicule the cars they review all the time. So might not agree but hey, it's their opinions.

Plus his posting has been taken out of context. All he was stating was that VW literally means "People's Car" and as a comparison compared it to Proton, which is also supposed to be a "People's Car". I could be wrong but I think the point the guy was trying to make was that it's an ordinary car, which is what it is back in Germany. On the part where the GTI resembles a mini MPV, he wasn't comparing the GTI to any other MPV in the market. He was just trying to make the point that with its high roofline and all, the GTI looks like a mini MPV. If you really look at the car and try to be subjective, the guy does have a point. The GTI, for a hot hatch, does have a roofline/height that makes it look like a mini MPV.

VW makes good cars. No doubt. Maybe not as good as Audi or BMW or Merc, but then again they're not supposed to be Premium cars like the latter 3. But they do make good cars and certainly better than the Malaysian People's Car, Proton. Unfortunately readers, the ones that commented anyways, got it all out of context.

Lastly, since when was grammar and spelling such an important factor when blogging? Most if not all postings on blogs and forums are strewn with grammar and spelling errors. Some comments on spelling errors and grammatical mistakes were just hilarious and childish.

Come on people, grow up a little and be a little bit more subjective.

  • Is 'tiny living' really irrelevant in Singapore?

I discussed the possibility of living in tiny houses in Singapore in an earlier blog post. But as we know, it isn't an option to begin with – no thanks, of course, to our lack of land space.  Someone also pointed out that the idea of tiny houses is "romanticised" – which, I don't deny (but hey, that's why it's a dream). While it's clear tiny houses aren't going to work out here, the concept of 'tiny living' is; not just physically but also mentally. Anyone who has lived enough years lo
