The GTI version of the next generation Volkswagen Golf will receive a more powerful iteration of the existing 2.0L turbocharged engine. To achieve 220hp, there were detailed modifications made to the EA888 engine, including a new valve lift system developed by Audi. Volkswagen is also working on an electronically controlled, mechanically locking differentials for GTI and R models. This guarantees that the drive is still directed to the tire with most grip when accelerating.

Apart from the hot GTI, VW also plans for the next Golf to undertake significant engineering revisions to the 1.4-litre
