LEDing the way - Regan says, "LED FTW (For the win)!"

 

It's pretty obvious that Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are the latest and most exciting technological advancement in the lighting industry.

Let's start with daytime running lights. Just like how eyeliner emphasises an eye, a strip of light can be designed to underscore a vehicle's character. In that sense, this relates highly to Audi cars and their signature LED daytime running lights.

Automakers favour LEDs because they are durable, compact and energy efficient. LED light sources can last much longer than halogens and typically last the life of a vehicle, which can be seen as an added value to consumers.

Even the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class will become the first vehicle in the world that will not use a single light bulb. Instead, the tri-star flagship sedan will be fitted with almost 500 LEDs filling all lighting, signalling, and interior illumination roles.

 

Regan's take on this? LEDs will certainly have a bright future. Even the light in his room is LED.

Nicholas reckons that LED will never be the star of the prom without the plain Jane Halogen

 

Nicholas isn't just about to bring in the saying that 'old is gold' because, certainly, halogen being the elder and more outdated tech of the duo isn't all shimmery yellow. That said, he's certainly not for LED taking over the world.

Carmakers are well aware of that fact, too. And they shrewdly crafted the product hierarchy, where base variants usually make do with halogen headlamps, while their sportier and more premium cousins come with LED ones. It is almost a symbolism of status.

This means while the S-Class will sparkle with LED headlamps, the A-Class will continue to emit its glow from halogens.

 

Yes, Nicholas concurs that LED is better than halogen in more ways than one. But that alone will not kill off the latter. Simply put, automakers recognise the need to differentiate their products, and lighting technologies is one of the ways to do it.

    Jakarta - Motoring advice....of sorts

    Some of you readers may have noticed that I have not been posting regularly as of late. This is basically because I have been traveling a fair bit recently and I was over on the island of Java for nearly a week's worth of R & R after attending a (non-motoring) business event in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.   Now Jakarta is indeed a place which all of you should go to if given the chance. This metropolis is the largest city in the region and it is indeed an eye opener. It is a city where there is a love for statues and monuments of a grand scale and it is also a city that is also epic when it comes to motoring in and around it. It should be, as Jakarta has over twenty million people living in it.   When you have a city that has that many people and haphazard town planning (as the city has basically grown to enormous proportions and engulfed the surrounding areas where tiny roads cannot cope with the growth) traffic jams are the norm.     The refreshed Gallardo gains a new sibling with a soft top

    The first images for the facelifted Gallardo Spyder are here, and it wears the similar trigonometry inspired face which does not fit well for the Spyder.   Though personally I feel that the extremely sharp styling does not work as well as it did with the coupe. Maybe it's the colour or the camera angles, but perhaps its looks better in the flesh.   Besides the folding soft top, the Spyder is essentially similar to its coupe sibling, which was revealed at the recently concluded Paris Motor Show. It wears a new set of two-tone 19-inch Apollo polished alloys and feature bigger air intakes ahead of the front rims. Like in the coupe the powertrain air outlet area is wider for improved thermodynamic efficiency.   What do you guys think? Am I too harsh on the looks or do you think it will grow on us?

    The magnetic sunroof - The latest in totally useless car accessories

    While browsing online I recently came across this contraption that supposedly adds a dash of style to the roof of any type of car (with a steel roof). I present to you the magnetic sunroof. This has to be at the top of the list of totally useless car accessories, just below the fake rear window wiper and the world famous 'Type-R' sticker.   It comes in roll up form like a carpet. Or like tinting film. You take it out, unfurl it on the roof of your sunroof-less car and wallah! You have an instant sunroof without cutting a hole through the roof of your car. Now why in heaven's sake would anyone want to put something totally useless on one's car? It's not as if this is like a Road Runner cartoon where the road runner can actually run through a black hole painted on by Willy E Coyote. As if you can put your head through or tilt it up to let air in. It is totally useless.   Sometimes people will try to do anything for a quick buck. Sometimes people will think that buying, installing or using such an accessory is actually good, useful, adds style, adds class, adds horsepower or makes the car look like a million dollars.   "A vehicle just looks better with a sunroof" says one of these ads. I have to say that a vehicle looks better with a REAL sunroof. If you readers know of anyone using one of these, please, for the sake of all that's holy tell them to remove the item immediately from the roofs of their cars. I beg of you.
