blogentry-114362-0-26048100-1389060418_thumb.jpgThe US Army is currently testing a prototype all-purpose vehicle powered by a Subaru turbodiesel-electric hybrid drivetrain. Called the ULV (Ultra Light Vehicle), it is meant to replace the HUMVEE.

Commissioned by the Secretary of Defense and developed by the US Army's TARDEC (Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center), the ULV addresses some of the HUMVEE's shortcomings and serve as the next generation of go-anywhere military truck.

Unlike the HUMVEE's V8, the ULV's petrol motor is a Subaru turbodiesel boxer making 175 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. However, even the military is changing with the times with a hybrid drivetrain. According to Jalopnik, the hybrid system is comprised of two Remy electric drive motors and a 14.2 kWh Navitas Li-Iron Phosphate Battery, which at peak power can generate 180 kW (241 hp).

blogentry-114362-0-36286000-1389060422_thumb.jpgTARDEC says the ULV has a range of 337 miles at 35 mph on level ground. On pure electric power, it can cruise up to 21 miles with the advantage of doing so in sheer silence. The electric motors mean that a driveshaft is no longer necessary, and when combined with an improved undercarriage it's a significant improvement over the HUMVEE's ability to shield occupants from roadside mines, whose blasts originate beneath the vehicle.

blogentry-114362-0-18359100-1389060424_thumb.jpgThough the Ultra Light Vehicle is so in name only, and at 13 thousand pounds actually weighs about 3,500 pounds more than the HUMVEE, it has a better power-to-weight ratio thanks to its hybrid drivetrain. In accordance with specs put forth by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the vehicle will have a payload capacity of 4,500 pounds and cost of $250,000 per unit over a 5,000 unit production run. Testing is scheduled to finish sometime this year, whereupon a determination for production will be decided.

Nonchalant cyclist casually picks up fallen plastic bags after ignoring red light and causing an accident with a motorcycle

Only someone as carefree as this cyclist would care about his plastic bags after getting hit by a motorcycle.     The video starts with the cam car slowing down at a junction in Jurong West.  As his car comes to a stop, he notices a cyclist ignoring the red-light signal and crossing the junction. At the same time, a motorcyclist enters from the right at a high speed. Unable to stop his bike or swerve to avoid him, the motorcyclist knocks over the cyclist and falls to the ground. Unfazed by the accident, the cyclist immediately rises and gathers the grocery bags that had fallen off his bicycle. The motorcyclist gets up soon after and dusts himself off. Weirdly enough, the cyclist's reaction to this accident reminds me of this gif of Jimmy Fallon. I don’t know if I should be shocked or relieved. On the one hand, I'm glad that both parties are not severely hurt, but on the other, what exactly is the cyclist thinking? No matter how empty a road might seem, it is never a good decision to run a red-light signal and assume that the road will stay clear for you. Netizens’ reactions I agree! However, no matter how strict we enforce our regulations, there are always that few individuals who would go above and beyond on the roads just to do things for their own convenience. 😂😂 As much as I hate additional fines, I do think the root of the problem is the fact that most road users think it's okay to jaywalk (or jaycycle) if they do it quickly and with the right timing. Cyclists (and other pedestrians) who insist on crossing these junctions under these circumstances will be found guilty of jaywalking/cycling and be fined up to $1,000 or jailed up to 3 months.      -------- Thinking of selling your car? sgCarMart Quotz guarantees the highest selling price for your car. Honda Stream cuts through traffic on PIE like a slippery ‘Orang Minyak’

TL;DR – Video footage of a Honda Stream cutting through tight pocket of spaces on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) makes one think of a particular Malay supernatural character.   What is an Orang Minyak? For the benefit of people who are not familiar with the term, the direct translation for ‘Orang Minyak’ is ‘Oily man.’ Image by Deviant Art It is a supernatural being with a strong coat of oil/grease that can slip through any cracks or holes in your home. Back to the Honda Stream Like the Orang Minyak, the Honda stream in this minute-long video slips through small pockets of space between cars like butter. Here’s the video:   Hold up, can an MPV do that? Well, the classification of the Honda Stream is technically a COMPACT MPV, but that doesn’t mean it’s small. Image by sgCarMart.com The only reason it could manage such a feat - The other motorists let it. At this moment here. And here. If the cam car or the car in front had decided to f#$% around with the Honda Stream, they could have accelerated, and the Stream would have hit them for a nice insurance pay out. Online Chatter There could be another story here. But imagine if the driver had hit other motorists. Wouldn't the emergency have escalated into an enormous $hit show??     --- Thinking of selling your car? sgCarMart Quotz guarantees the highest selling price for your car. Container truck swerves to avoid lorry on PIE, mauls down multiple cars in the process

If you frequent the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) for your daily commute, you may have experienced a major traffic jam on Monday morning (27 Sep).  Here's the reason behind the major jam during the morning peak hour:  What Happened? The accident took place along the PIE, involving multiple vehicles.  A blue container truck swerved across multiple lanes to avoid a lorry on Lane 3 of the PIE. This resulted in the container truck colliding into multiple vehicles, causing a significant amount of collateral damage. The accident caused a severe standstill jam that choked up the PIE, leaving only 1 out of 3 lanes passable. The Outcome  The video showed 6 vehicles involved in the accident – The tipper truck, 3 lorries, 1 Toyota Corolla and 1 Hyundai Advante.  The impact from the collision was so great that fumes began to emit from the engine bay of the Hyundai Avante.  One lorry had its side completely torn off as a result of the collision. As a result of this massive accident, debris was strewn across the PIE.  PSA: If you happen to drive past this stretch of the PIE, do check your tyres for any puncture.  UPDATE: A total of 13 people were injured from the accident. While 10 of them were conveyed to the hospital, 3 of them were assessed by SCDF for minor injuries and refused to be conveyed to the hospital.  An Underlying Matter Despite all the attention on the accident itself, there is an underlying issue – The safe transportation of foreign workers. Online sources mentioned multiple workers were present in the lorries when the accident occurred.  Accidents like the above are why stricter regulations that enforce a safer mode of transporting foreign workers should be mandated.  If you agree with me and want to make a change, do sign the online petition below:
https://www.change.org/p/land-transport-authority-make-it-mandatory-to-transport-workers-in-buses-or-vans I hope all those involved in the accident are alright. Netizens' Comments Claim insurance for a normal accident also headache already, let alone this one. Indeed, there was nothing that cars on lane 1 and 2 could do. Whoa there cowboy! Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions.

Taxi zooms off after getting hit by oncoming Tour De Changi cyclist

The age-old debate on whether cyclists should be allowed on the road continues.  Watch this video, to find out why the debate never ends: The incident happened along Nicoll Drive, in the vicinity of Changi Beach Park.  The video was from the cyclist's perspective, who was cycling relatively fast at the said location.  What happened? As the cyclist approached a junction, a Comfort Delgro taxi emerged from the filter lane. However, the taxi is seen not stopping at the stop line. The cyclist's fast speed, coupled with his late reaction caused him to be unable to stop in time. As a result, he ended up colliding against the side of the taxi.  Yes, having a set of good brakes for a bicycle or car is necessary, but what is more important is to practice defensive riding/driving at all times. Upon seeing how much the inconsiderate taxi driver inched out to the main road, the cyclist should have either slowed down or swerved away from the taxi.  Netizens' comments No, don't tell me, "You think they fix Brembo?". If the cyclist's brakes cannot perform at the speed at which his bike is capable of going, don't ride it at all - It is a safety hazard to the cyclist and other road users.  That's like having drum brakes on your Honda Civic Type R 🙄 I can't stop stressing the importance of defensive riding.  The aftermath Shortly after the collision, the drivers of a black Porsche and white BMW could be seen stopping to help the injured cyclist.  Below is an account of the cyclist's experience: Kudos to those 2 guys that helped the injured cyclist!! Yes, cycling may be a fun hobby that keeps you healthy. However, it is not worth risking your life over it. If you really want to "enjoy" the speed and ride on the road, remember to wear proper safety and equipment. Whenever possible, maintain a safe speed and slow down near junctions.   PS. Did I mention how apt the NDP2021 theme song, "Road ahead" was in the video?   --- Thinking of selling your car? sgCarMart Quotz guarantees the highest selling price for your car.
