blogentry-114362-0-70172800-1389165409_thumb.jpgYou might have tried cleaning your car interior with disinfectant, or clip air fresheners to your air-con vent, and realise there is still a slight odour. This is because, the problem most likely lies inside the air-con vent.

It's not a pleasant experience especially when you turn the air-con blower up on a hot sunny day, and realise theres an odour.

This is due to bacteria growing inside the ventilation system, or bacteria that died due to unfavourable conditions.

Moisture in the system, coupled with our warm weather, provides the two basic necessities needed for bacteria to thrive. Sometimes, the conditions inside the ventilation system change due to a variety of factors, making the environment no longer suitable for the bacteria's survival and it dies. When this happens the stink given off is the same as when food rots.

It's almost impossible to try and prevent bacteria from living inside the aircon filter. Turning the heater up isn't going to 'burn' away the smell, neither is turning the air flow to FRESH AIR.

A moderately effective method is to spray deodorant or disinfectant 'into' the vents. Another solution that might be more effective, is using mustard powder and water (vinegar mixed with water can also be used) and spraying it into the vents. After spraying, run the blower heater at maximum heat for 4 - 5 minutes (Open all the doors while you do this). After which, there might be a strong vinegar smell (If you used vinegar), spray the inside of the vents with air freshener or even a little bit of water, and let the blower run on full power for a few minutes, just to dry it up. Be sure to repeat these steps if your car has rear cabin vents.

There's actually not much you can do to prevent it from coming back. But one thing you can do is to check and make sure the drainage opening for the AC unit is not blocked, If it is, moisture will accumulate and give the bacteria a reason to live. You should see a fair amount of water dripping out from under your car right after parking.

If the smell you're getting isn't like bad breath or rotting food and doesn't seem to be coming from the vents, it could be a leak from your exhaust system, causing exhaust fumes to get into the cabin. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, which you really don't want entering your cabin.

If you don't already know, Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and initially, non-irritating. Inhalation of the gas can cause "light-headedness" and headaches, and on rare cases, can be fatal.

'Oily smells' however, suggests something might be wrong in the engine bay while excessive braking. Very poor use of the clutch with a manual transmission will also give off smells.

So, make sure you get your vehicle inspected and serviced regularly and if you aren't confident with dealing with the odour from your vents yourself, get your trusted mechanic to do the job for you. And most of all, keep you car cabin clean.

This might be a good way to get a new car for free

Spotted on the facebook page "private hire sg cars/partners - grab, gojek, ryde, tada etc", someone posted a photo of a fender bender between a BMW and a Toyota and we were shocked by how much you can claim if you were involved in such a accident. This should not cost too much to repair right? Oh wait till you see the final amount submitted by the surveyor. Yup, you saw it right. The cost of repairs on the BMW E60 5 Series would amount to a staggering $88,000.  To put that into perspective, you can buy yourself a similar BMW coupled with a new 10-year COE and lots of change left for petrol and parking. Others on the post agreed too that this is one really over inflated amount. That said, there were some who thought that the is not the actual amount that was asked for...  Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on who's point of view, that is the discharge voucher which you could say is going to be the actual amount paid out. Of course quite a few felt that this is wrong... Let us know what you readers think of this in the comments below! UPDATE: There are some rumors that the discharge form was meant for a Lamborghini Gallardo and not the two cars as pictured above. ----------------------------------------------- Want to know if there are any more BMW 5 Series you could buy with $88,000, check out our used car pages! -----------------------------------------------

Yoga Teacher throws a tantrum at Grab driver when she does not "get her way."

A recent YouTube video of a lady berating a Grab driver with verbal insults is going viral. If you haven't already watched it, here's the link to the video. You’re welcome. Do note how the person who submitted the video titled it, it's important.    In the video, the lady wants her driver to make a U-Turn and head towards her destination by her preferred route. The driver refuses and tells her that it's the Grab driver's discretion to choose to listen to the rider or follow the fastest route as indicated on the GPS.  In this case, he flat out refused because he was scared there would be a traffic jam. We went to do a little digging and ta-dah! It turns out he was right!   Image taken from Grab.com The lady should have kept her cool and Googled whether the driver's claim was true, but of course, she didn't. She starts to "play family" which was very uncalled for. Here are some of her comments: Image taken from Traffic SG Facebook page Why lah? Why? What did his family do to you? Screenshot of video from Traffic SG Facebook page Naturally, the driver gets offended by her rude comments and starts shooting his mouth off to her as well. He questions her marital status out of nowhere. I honestly thought he was going to talk about another part of the male body. The lady goes on to tell the driver that "if he represents what Singaporean men are, no one needs to get married." By now, you should be curious as to how the lady looks like. Throughout the whole video, the spotlight is on the driver and she doesn’t show her face, but we found her.   Taken from balispiritfestival.worldsecuresystems.com Wait a minute. Anybody have anything to say? Of course they do! Image taken from Traffic SG Facebook page Me and you sister!  If you want the driver to follow your preferred route in the future then here's a helpful suggestion from a member of the public.   Image taken from Traffic SG Facebook page Very wise words. The lady's Facebook page have since been deactivated. ----------------------------------------------- Worried that you too might be an obnoxious passenger? VEP delayed till 2020 or maybe when your grandchildren have children

If you've been one of the "kan cheong" people waiting to get your Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) approved before driving into Malaysia, here's some good news for you - The implementation of the VEP scheme will only commence next year. According to The Straits Times, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke claimed that the delay is due to the system's inability to cope with the exponential number of vehicles that needed to install the RFID tag. It seems that many Singaporeans are not surprised by this delay. It’s not the first time that there has been a delay with the implementation of the VEP and you can be sure people were quick to call that out.  And some people make pretty sound arguments. Wait, does this mean that Singaporean car owners with the RFID tags did the application and probably wasted a weekend queueing up in Malaysia for nothing? Sounds about right.  Malaysia Boleh? Case closed. ----------------------------------------------- Still wondering how to get your VEP? We went through the entire process so you can have this handy guide here! -----------------------------------------------

MX-5 lady left note to criticise Volvo driver’s parking. Plot twist made me Google meaning of the word “Sanctimonious”.

Imagine parking your car like you passed your driving test on the first try and then returning to your car with this note on the windscreen -     Did you really park like an idiot? Who left the note? Did they get hurt while getting out of their car from the passenger side? So many questions. To the car camera for answers.     Here’s our supposedly wronged and potentially injured party arriving in an MX-5. Very good choice of car. After 30 seconds of parking and having to exit the car from the passenger side, the lady comes out to take a photo of the “offending” Volvo S60.     She spends about 10 seconds taking photos of the car from multiple angles. We know the Volvo S60 looks good from any angle. After walking one round inspecting the car like it was at the front gate of an army camp, she leaves her note.     Did the Volvo driver park like an idiot? Well here’s the tea.     I can hear you screaming: “Lies! The driver probably took this photo at another lot! No way someone will park in that spot! Not even the nimble Miata!” Here’s the other photo.     At least the Volvo driver was nice enough to mask out the MX-5’s plate.   Here’s the full video uploaded on SG Road Vigilante:   And “Sanctimonious” means “making a show of being morally superior to other people.”   ----------------------------------------------- Impressed by how the MX-5 can fit into snug places? Here are some for sale.   Or maybe you're leaning more on the innocent Volvo S60? We've got you covered here too!   -----------------------------------------------
