Cockpit safety halos for Formula 1 cars in 2017
Starting from the 2017 season, Formula 1 cars will all incorporate a 'halo' structure similar to the one that Ferrari has been testing to enhance safety for its drivers.
The ruling came about following the death of Jules Bianchi last year who sustained injuries in the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix when his Marussia F1 car collided with a recovery vehicle.
While the design seen in the photos now look pretty ungainly, Autosport reports that a more streamlined and less intrusive version of the halo will be used come 2017. The halo will be tested further starting in June before final approval is slated to be signed off in July.
The other more elegant design tested by Red bull has sadly been rejected during a gathering of the teams' technical directors in Monaco over the last weekend.
