There are close to 10 different flag-down rates, three different metered-fare structures, over 10 kinds of surcharges and eight types of phone-booking fees in Singapore.

 

The Government has tried to unravel the cab charge complexity that has in part driven commuters into the arms of private-hire operators like Uber and Grab. But it has made no headway. The ball, the Government decided, is in the court of operators.

 

ComfortDelGro, the largest of them, holds the key to a new fare structure. The others are too small to make an impact. But ComfortDelGro has never seen the need to change. It has enjoyed a dominance only recently threatened by the rise of private-hire firms.

 

A new survey commissioned by the Public Transport Council shows commuters are more satisfied with private-hire providers than traditional taxis. If the sampling is truly reflective of ground sentiment, it is damning. It means that in just over three years since Uber and Grab came onto the scene, they have garnered more satisfaction than taxis, which have been around for nearly a century.

 

As a country with the largest taxi population per capita among its peers, Singapore should not have room for a private-hire boom. Yet, the private-hire fleet has trebled in size since 2013 to rival that of cabs.

 

A seemingly unending source of funding and a knack for identifying gaps in taxi services have allowed private-hire firms to grow their presence.

 

A simpler fare system can help taxis turn the tide. First to go should be surcharges, which have led to yield-maximising behaviour. Taxis vanishing before midnight is a classic example. We cannot blame cabbies for behaving as any businessman would.

 

In Hong Kong, where cab fares are devoid of surcharges, cabbies are driven by only one goal: to be where customers are. In Singapore, their whereabouts are greatly influenced by surcharges.

 

ComfortDelGro, and indeed the authorities, must recognise this as a shortcoming, and fix it.

It would be an absolute irony if the 10 different flag-down rates, 3 different metered-fare structures, over 10 kinds of surcharges and 8 types of phone-booking fees were abolished, as it defeats the objectives why they were implemented in the very first place!!!

In the first place, the objectives were wrong and lead to these Frankenstein surcharges..Now they're calling to correct these wrong objectives n remove the surcharges. Takes guts to call the scholars wrong, but it's the right thing to do.

 

To continue with the wrong initial objectives would unnecessarily burden all of us..

Isn't this the problem with our country's entire system? 

 

Every major system we have in SG, is so complicated that many of us don't understand.  examples: COE, Car taxation scheme, CPF withdrawal, ERP charges, Property cooling measures, HDB balloting, PSLE exam, and even Primary 1 registration, and whole lot of other systems that have multi tier levels, that will only confuse users and customers.

 

How many of us actually fully understand, for example, our CPF withdrawal and car taxation? 

 

And who's to blame?  Gov't Scholars?  Ministers?  

 

The problem is they are always trying to fix a hole leaking water. And another hole appeared and they fix it again with another tier of policy.  So at the end of days, we get confusing rules and schemes.

Exactly! When the money grabbing govt sees you hv no choice but still needs their services or goods, they will skin you deep deep for all of your money! You hv no choice or else dun drink water, dun go home or dun use electricity! They use all those so-called experts to justify and backup their irresponsible and inhumane fees hikes, to enslave us to ever increasing costs.. what better way to enslave the people than make them work their asses off to pay ever increasing costs? Win win for them! We must show enough is enough or else will be us digging our own graves..

    Man uploads video to shame DHL delivery driver, gets online backlash instead

    Here's a perfect example of how public shaming can come and bite you in the ass. In a recent video uploaded on Singapore Incidents' YouTube channel, an angry man chases down and confronts a DHL Delivery driver because the DHL driver allegedly pointed the middle finger at him. Here's the video if you haven't already seen it. In the video, the incident begins along the KPE when the DHL van does an e-brake in front of our angry man, who is driving behind the DHL van. Angry man proceeds to sound his displeasure with a couple of honks. Ideally, this should be the end of the story for most people. But, no. The angry man then proceeds to chase the DHL van like some road vigilante. As soon as angry man's car is parallel to the DHL van, we hear some cries of displeasure before he grabs his mobile device* (which was recording the whole incident) to capture DHL driver's face on video. *This is a chargeable offence by the way The video cuts off and jumps to the DHL driver sitting on the floor and speaking in dialect (Hokkien I think?) trying to justify his actions. It's not clear how they ended up out of their vehicles. Angry man then demands an apology from the DHL driver for pointing the middle finger at him. We think the finger-pointing might have happened when both their vehicles were parallel to one another (in the camera's blind spot). The DHL driver humbles himself and apologises in both Hokkien and English. But, angry man can't let sleeping dogs lie and submitted this video to shame the DHL driver. What the people say He should have just let it go after the apology and maybe he thought netizens would rally behind him. But, boy oh boy, was he wrong. What do you think?

A video uploaded on SG Road Vigilante has sparked a furious debate online that split netizens evenly on two sides of the coin. The video shows a Mercedes-Benz "stealing" a carpark lot from the cam car driver. Or is it really "stealing"? That is the question. The video, which was uploaded last week has since received over 260,000 views and almost 1000 comments! If you haven't seen the video, here’s the link courtesy of SG Road Vigilante's Facebook page Have you been in this situation before? In the video, cam car is patiently waiting for a carpark lot at IMM carpark for about 10 minutes. A White Mercedes-Benz CLS Class pulls up a couple of cars in front of the cam car. When the driver of the CLS (let's call him Mr CLS) spots a family walking towards the area he's waiting at; he decides to reverse to "claim more ground". Needless to say, once cam car driver notices what Mr CLS is doing, cam car inches forward to get the soon-to-be-vacant lot as he was waiting there for a long time already. Mr CLS gives him no chance to do so and reverses into the now-empty parking lot. This extra guy To make matters even worse, someone steps out of the CLS (supposedly the son of the driver) and walks over to cam car to give justification why the lot belongs to the occupants of the CLS instead of the cam car . He even makes a couple of rude gestures to the cam car once that's done. So whose lot is it? Some people say that the CLS had the right of way Calculative sia this guy and very specific too Some people jumped to the defence of the patient cam car driver The most important thing It doesn’t matter who the lot belonged to but we can all agree that on the most important thing.......     Grab driver and his male passenger thinks of others before self in a nasty Thanksgiving car accident

    Have you ever watched a car accident video and told yourself in your head that “heng ah, it wasn’t me or someone I know”? I guess it’s human nature. The truth of the matter is – Even if you’re the safest driver in the world, all it takes is just one idiot driver to mess it up for you. So what happens if it happens to you or someone within your social circle? Read on to find out. Sometime in the evening yesterday, 28th November 2019, I received a message from one of my closest friends. It was an image of his heavily damaged Honda Freed. That’s how heavily damaged it was. The cause? This Lorry. It was a pretty bone-chilling sight, but the fact that he was messaging me meant that he was fine, so that was a relief. Eventually, he sent over the video footage of the accident. The video includes both the rear and dashcam footage. In the video, my friend, the Freed Driver, let’s call him Jeff, for privacy sake, is filtering into an expressway. A lorry follows suit, loses control and charges straight into the back of the Freed, shattering the glass on the rear windscreen. Also, that's a damn loud bang.  In the car There’s no in-car footage, but you can hear a brief exchange of conversations between three people in the car – Jeff and his two passengers. Jeff and the other guy were worried about whether anyone was injured, but the lady, presumably in shock, could only think of one thing. She was carrying Thanksgiving potluck food with her when the crash happened, and you can hear her go “Oh no! The gravy casserole’s everywhere!” Whut?     This Abang's gangster behaviour got me super pissed off (even when I'm typing this)

    In a video submitted to Roads.SG and uploaded on YouTube and Facebook, a recent case of road rage has got me fuming mad with a particular individual. However, I'll try to be as civil and professional as possible. The video was just uploaded about 3 hours ago and has already received more than 100 shares on Facebook. Here's the video, in case you haven't seen it. Video from Road.SG YouTube channel The driver and his mother were entering a HDB estate and driving towards the entrance of a carpark when a white Honda Vezel almost has a head-on collision with their car. Screenshot taken from Roads.SG YouTube Channel Reviewing the footage, you can see the Vezel was on the verge of crossing the white line to the opposing lane. The dashcam driver gives a honk, accident averted, and that should be the end of the story yes? No. An Abang decides that there was an injustice with the horn and goes all aggro on the dashcam driver. Abang wasn't even the driver of the Vezel! Abang:  The relationship between the Honda Vezel driver and Abang is not clear. Dashcam driver tries to defend himself and asks the Abang to look at his dashcam footage for proof, to which, the Abang says "don't need" multiple times. The spark to the argument The dashcam driver then says "Nevermind, LTA will see" and intends to drive off, but Abang  Dashcam driver loses his cool and disregarding the warnings of his mother, he steps out of the car to confront Abang. Abang asks a damn stupid question - "What's your problem?". Dude, the problem is you. But, I digress. Moving on, Abang starts screaming his lungs out at Dashcam Driver. He's so fierce that Dashcam Driver actually starts shivering (the subtitles in the video helps a lot).
