blogentry-114362-0-52736300-1510195827_thumb.jpgWithin its first few hours of operation in Las Vegas yesterday (Wednesday), an autonomous shuttle bus that is part of a ballyhooed study of driverless vehicles on public roads was involved in a collision with a truck. No injuries were reported. Details from the incident are still emerging. Members of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department have not commented on the collision or issued a report. Nor have officials from Navya, the French company that manufactures the shuttles. There were passengers on the shuttle when the crash took place, according to reports from KSNV-TV. A spokesperson for AAA, which is a sponsor of the study, says the shuttle was stationary when the truck struck the left-front side of the vehicle.

But a human safety steward is aboard the shuttle and can stop operations with the push of an emergency button. During regular operations, the eight-passenger shuttle is expected to run on a fixed 0.6-mile loop in the Fremont section of the city, making three stops along the route. The shuttle will be taken out of service for the remainder of the day, but organizers expect to restart operations Thursday, according to city officials, who also stated that the driver of the truck was cited by police in a post on the city’s Tumblr page.

Only hours earlier, Las Vegas had hosted a welcome party for the shuttle, with appearances from Las Vegas mayor Carolyn Goodman, comedians/magicians Penn & Teller, and race-car driver Danica Patrick. The electric shuttle, owned by mass-transit company Keolis, is touted as the first to integrate with traffic lights, which could help transportation officials learn ways to improve traffic flow.

The human-driven truck struck the AI-driven shuttle while the latter was stationary.

Provided the AI hadn't parked the shuttle where it wasn't supposed to, this is actually a good argument for removing the human from the truck - and by extension, all humans from the driving seats of motor vehicles.

    Lexus RX350L: The perfect motorway cruiser, save for one flaw...

    Is your S.O. always complaining about length? Well then this might be just the thing that she (or he?) is looking for. Lexus has extended (literally!) their popular RX model range to now include a three-row version, apparently because showroom visitors in the U.S.A have been asking for a seven-seater of their favorite SUV. Lexus inform us that numerous improvements have been made to this facelifted model of the RX350L in order to sharpen up its handling, including the use of new Laser Screw Welding and high-strength adhesives for the body, and new dampers equipped with a Friction Control Device to keep said body in check. And from the driver's seat, the car feels those improvements. Despite being such a large car, the whole thing steers accurately and is very easy to place on the road, after a little acclimatisation of course. Which is all well and good, but let's get real. Nobody is going to buy this Lexus with the expectation of razor-sharp handling through the roads of Kent Ridge.  So let's talk about how this car performs where it was truly designed to excel: On the highway. I would typically be the first to join the anti-SUV bandwagon but gosh, is this thing a revelation. Yes, you do get some float when you hit some low-frequency undulations at just the right speed, but I'll excuse the car's weight and necessarily soft damping. Everywhere else, the car rides over bumps with absolute aplomb. Ignore any camber changes and bumps on the road, you simply keep the steering wheel in the direction of intended travel and plough along, just as a proper limousine ought to. Mind you, this thing was riding on 20-inch rims as tested. But a quality ride does not alone make a good cruiser, and the RX350L also comes in hitting with supreme insulation. You genuinely will not be able to tell the quality of the tarmac as you ride along in the RX350L, either with your ears of through the steering wheel. With the three days I had the car I frequently found myself anticipating the hour in which I would be able to leave my desk just so that I can fall into the supple leather seats, shut the doors, and then just laze in the cabin's supreme quietness. It genuinely is that good. Combine this with the fact that the car comes with ventilated seats and an air-conditioning system that works very well, and I think you will not doubt when I say the car could rival many bedrooms for comfort levels. Which is a good thing then, because you do not want to have too many kids to ferry around in this thing. Third-row passengers are genuinely woefully catered for space-wise, although the forward two rows will get more than a generous share of the car's length. But hey, space for all that suspension travel and the rear double wishbones has to come from somewhere right? Fold the third-row down however, and you get a whopping 652 litres of boot space, so think of this as a covered luxury truck and you should be fine. And the one flaw with the car? Well, the 12 speaker system needs a bit of work. I'm no sound engineer for sure, but the car's speakers manage to combine that tinny effect you get from cheap earphones with the muddy sound you get from a bass-boosted headphone. It ain't terrible to listen to, but it sure as hell stands out when everywhere else you see and touch (and even the places you don't, read the full review) is so well put together. But if you can get over something like that and need a large SUV to ferry your kids along on your frequent Ikea runs, rest assured that this thing have the necessary length to satisfy anyone.     A woman being a PUBIC nuisance on Middle Road. No, that's not a typo

    You probably have seen a video that went viral recently about a woman removing her clothes in anger on Middle Road. She even went as far as pulling down her panties! If you haven’t, here’s the video courtesy of Roads.sg In the video, you can see a woman taking off her clothes in response to a man (a cab driver) walking away from her. She is believed to have done this to play the victim card and make false accusations that the cab driver was the one who did it to her. Crucial eye witness account An eye witness of the incident posted the video on Roads.sg According to the witness, he saw the lady kicking the cab. She then began chasing the cab driver, scratching, punching and going all bat shit crazy. The driver did not retaliate to her provocation. So what triggered this? There have been no reports (as of yet) as to what led to this behaviour, but theories are being thrown around on social media. Even I would be offended. At least give me $10 What happened in the end In a recent STOMP article posted earlier today, it’s been confirmed that the lady, a 31-year old woman was arrested for PUBLIC nuisance.     VEP delayed till 2020 or maybe when your grandchildren have children

    If you've been one of the "kan cheong" people waiting to get your Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) approved before driving into Malaysia, here's some good news for you - The implementation of the VEP scheme will only commence next year. According to The Straits Times, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke claimed that the delay is due to the system's inability to cope with the exponential number of vehicles that needed to install the RFID tag. It seems that many Singaporeans are not surprised by this delay. It’s not the first time that there has been a delay with the implementation of the VEP and you can be sure people were quick to call that out.  And some people make pretty sound arguments. Wait, does this mean that Singaporean car owners with the RFID tags did the application and probably wasted a weekend queueing up in Malaysia for nothing? Sounds about right.  Malaysia Boleh?     Eh LTA! Don’t touch my car leh!

In the image (see full image below), we can tell that this incident happened sometime at night and it's at a HDB estate.  Image taken from Roads.sg Just so you know, LTA officers are obligated to come down and visit you whenever they receive a complaint about your vehicle. It could be illegal parking matters or of course illegal modifications, which is exactly what the LTA officer is checking for in the image. The best part about these visits is that you won’t even know about them! Upon inspection and if found guilty of modification violations, you’ll only hear about their visit through a letter from LTA accompanied with a fine/summon that will probably tear a hole through your *censored*. Why people want to “sabo” you If you’ve done modifications to your car and someone made a complaint against you, it could be a couple of reasons 1.       They have nothing better to do and damn cb 2.       They cannot tolerate the disturbance your car causes to the neighbourhood Generally when people complain, it’s because of No.2. What should you do if you don’t want people to call the polis? LTA has very clear guidelines as to what modifications need or don’t need LTA’s approval. They’ve also included modifications that are specifically not allowed. Everything else not mentioned, is fair game. Taken from LTA.gov.sg Keep within the guidelines and LTA won’t touch your car. As you can see, not everyone appreciates how loud your vehicles are. Especially in residential areas. Like, why? Louder isn’t always better.
