The Malaysian government will not increase the current speed limit of 80 km/h on state roads, 90 km/h on federal roads and 110 km/h on expressways anytime soon.

According to The Sun, the government came to this decision as statistics still showed that the amount of accidents are still high and costs would be very high if the roads were improved to cope with the higher speed limits.

“The speed limit of every road was set and gazetted after taking into consideration its geometric design, traffic flow capacity and accident risks. Although some expressways in the country were designed to sustain speeds of over 110km/h, the speed limit gazetted by the government remains at a maximum level of 110km/h,” said the ministry.

This news came after Lumut MP Haji Mohamad Imran suggested in 2015 the idea of raising nation speed limits as cars these days are of a better built and could travel at higher speeds safely.
