Other than giving us a hint of which direction Formula 1 is heading, the new cars have also designed to look prettier while increasing overtaking action.

 

Ross Brawn, who recently spoke at a "Tech Talk" seminar in Singapore a few days before the race, said that, "As time has gone on, another of the primary objectives was to make great looking cars. We want cars that look better than what you see in a video game, cars that kids want to have up on their walls. At each stage, as we have been evolving the car, we’ve had someone we are working with create a graphic representation artist to give us a feel of what the car could look like,"

 

With regards to them working on improve aerodynamics performance, he added that "once the cars get within a few car lengths of each other, they lose 50% of their downforce. That’s a substantial amount of performance lost. So we set about understanding why that was and how we can improve it. I’m pleased to say we’re at about 80%,"

    Qoros 3 sedan to debut at Geneva motor show

    There is a new "3" sedan in town. Although it may sound like a car that hails from Germany, it is actually the first small family saloon from Chinese car manufacturer, Qoros. The Qoros 3 will be making its world premiere in March's Geneva Motor Show.   Qoros was founded as a part of a joint venture between Chery Automobile and global holding company, Israel Corporation.   At launch, the 4.59m long saloon will be available with two 1.6-litres petrol engines - a naturally-aspirated unit and a turbocharged version. They produce 126bhp and 156bhp respectively. Both engines will come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard and an optional dual-clutch automatic transmission. The lower-powered engine propels the car from 0 to 100km/h in 11.0 seconds while the turbocharged lump does the same job in 9.0 seconds. Two turbocharged, direct-injected engines with 1.2-litres and 1.6-litres capacity are under development.   The Qoros 3 sedan will be joined by the Qoros 3 Estate Concept at the Geneva Motor Show. The Qoros 3 sedan will go on sale in the second half of the year.

    VW reveals its little blue pill to ecstasy

    It is an expected move from Volkswagen - a more potent, all-wheel drive variant to top the Golf range. But now it has got almost 300bhp from the redeveloped 2.0-litre lump taken off its GTI stablemate. Is this VW's hottest hot hatch yet? 2.0-litre. Four cylinders. 296bhp. 380Nm. 5.3 seconds. These are the figures from the latest Golf R.   In comparison, the Mk7 GTI has 220bhp and 350Nm of torque. That is almost 80 more horses in a similarly-sized hatchback. While the weight of the new R is not disclosed yet, we expect the Haldex four-wheel drive system to put a toll on the R at the scales. Then, the fifth generation of the AWD system promises up to 100 percent torque transfer to the rear axle - all done in fraction of a second via the Haldex coupling with help of an electro-hydraulic pump. Some cool tech there.   To us, the previous gen Golf R was mind-blowing enough with 256bhp and 330Nm of torque. But then, we bet it was only right for VW to increase the power figures as it is the natural way to showcase its progress - as with any car manufacturer. Then, we would gladly have the twin-centre pipes (which we thought was the iconic symbolisation of the R) over the quad pipes, any day, anytime. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this wouldn't be a mere figure-boasting exercise.

    Putin's cool new Russian-made limousine

    President Vladimir Putin traveled to his inauguration on Monday for a new six-year term in a Russian-made limousine, ditching his old stretch Mercedes to send a patriotic message of self-sufficiency amid increased tensions with the West.   Putin, in power since 2000, wants Russia to reduce its dependence on imported goods and technology, a drive that has gathered pace since Russia was hit by Western sanctions.   Some guests broke into applause at the sight of the car conveying Putin the short distance from his office to the Kremlin hall for the inauguration, Russian news agencies said.   "It's cooler than (U.S. President Donald) Trump's," one guest was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency.   Putin has in the past publicly driven Russian-made cars in front of television cameras in an effort to nurture patriotism and support the domestic auto industry.   Monday marked the first public outing of the new limousine, part of the "Kortezh" series of cars which is also expected to include a sedan, minivan and offroad vehicle.   Under development since 2012, the limousine is being produced by a Russian research institute known by the acronym NAMI, and will be distributed in partnership with Russian carmaker Sollers.   The new limousine is set to become the heir to the Russian-made ZIL sedans that for decades transported Soviet leaders.   Trade Minister Denis Manturov said state officials would be able to switch to Kortezh vehicles when enough of them became available, TASS news agency reported.   The Ministry of Trade said the cars would be marketed under the brand Aurus and made available for sale from the beginning of 2019, RIA reported.   In his inauguration address, Putin said technological innovation and research were essential for Russia's future to keep pace with global change.   Putin's last six-year term has been marked by a sharp downturn in relations with the West over conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, accusations of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, and the poisoning of a former Russian spy in England. Moscow denies meddling in the elections or poisoning the spy.
