Volkswagen might be on the cusp of the electric car revolution, but it’s painfully aware it needs the new 2019 Golf range to be a smash hit for those not yet ready to take the EV plunge. And its halo car - the venerable VW Golf GTI - is returning for its eighth iteration with a mission to tempt hot hatches to stay loyal to the genre.

Carmagazine UK has some inside scoops on the long awaited hothatch.

Not everybody likes the front end, which strikes some as looking like a sad face. But chief designer Klaus Bischoff tells me he’s confident that when you see it on the move you’ll be struck by its freshness and presence. His CEO Herbert Diess nods in agreement.

And you can be sure that the GTI will look sharper and more purposeful than more mainstream versions, which is the way it’s been since the first Golf GTI appeared in 1976. Expect the traditional red interior accents and chequered upholstery as well as the strong horizontal lines on the front.

New 2019 VW Golf GTI:

When the Golf Mk8 arrives, there will be many permutations of engine, transmission and spec, but they’ll all have five doors, as the Golf has not been immune to the global loss of interest in three-door hatches. At the top of the Golf range there will be three distinct versions:

GTI

GTI Cup

Golf R

VW Golf GTI performance specs

The regular Golf GTI returns with its familiar 2.0-litre turbo four now making 232bhp. It comes with a six-speed manual gearbox or, as a cost option, a seven-speed DSG twin-clutch auto. Expect a 0-62mph time of 6.1sec, aided by a marginally lower weight and a more slippery body. Top speed is restricted to 155mph.

The GTI Cup is a new addition to the line-up of go-faster Golfs. Inspired by the TCR derivative of the Mk7, it’s the sportiest Golf by a clear margin. It boasts the wildest aero kit, the lowest ride height, the fattest wheels and the biggest brakes, plus a diff lock. The power output is a reassuring 286bhp, and the maximum torque of 273lb ft is on tap from 1600 to 4300rpm. Optionally, you can pay to have the top speed limiter chip removed, buying you 166mph.

The new 2020 VW Golf R

The next VW Golf R is, again, powerful and composed – an uber-GTI with tidier road manners and a more comprehensive specification. It shares its 328bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four with the forthcoming Arteon shooting brake. The peak torque of 295lb ft is distributed to all four wheels via the seven-speed DSG. Expect an acceleration time of 4.3sec and relatively frugal fuel consumption. A 48-volt system with mild hybrid technology should be available on all three high-end Golfs.

Each model gets its own bumper graphics and cockpit treatment, and options including 20in wheels, larger-diameter cross-drilled sports brakes, lowered sports suspension with adaptive dampers, an Akrapovic exhaust and a blacked-out bodykit.

This might be a good way to get a new car for free

Spotted on the facebook page "private hire sg cars/partners - grab, gojek, ryde, tada etc", someone posted a photo of a fender bender between a BMW and a Toyota and we were shocked by how much you can claim if you were involved in such a accident. This should not cost too much to repair right? Oh wait till you see the final amount submitted by the surveyor. Yup, you saw it right. The cost of repairs on the BMW E60 5 Series would amount to a staggering $88,000.  To put that into perspective, you can buy yourself a similar BMW coupled with a new 10-year COE and lots of change left for petrol and parking. Others on the post agreed too that this is one really over inflated amount. That said, there were some who thought that the is not the actual amount that was asked for...  Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on who's point of view, that is the discharge voucher which you could say is going to be the actual amount paid out. Of course quite a few felt that this is wrong... Let us know what you readers think of this in the comments below! UPDATE: There are some rumors that the discharge form was meant for a Lamborghini Gallardo and not the two cars as pictured above. ----------------------------------------------- Want to know if there are any more BMW 5 Series you could buy with $88,000, check out our used car pages! -----------------------------------------------

Yoga Teacher throws a tantrum at Grab driver when she does not "get her way."

A recent YouTube video of a lady berating a Grab driver with verbal insults is going viral. If you haven't already watched it, here's the link to the video. You’re welcome. Do note how the person who submitted the video titled it, it's important.    In the video, the lady wants her driver to make a U-Turn and head towards her destination by her preferred route. The driver refuses and tells her that it's the Grab driver's discretion to choose to listen to the rider or follow the fastest route as indicated on the GPS.  In this case, he flat out refused because he was scared there would be a traffic jam. We went to do a little digging and ta-dah! It turns out he was right!   Image taken from Grab.com The lady should have kept her cool and Googled whether the driver's claim was true, but of course, she didn't. She starts to "play family" which was very uncalled for. Here are some of her comments: Image taken from Traffic SG Facebook page Why lah? Why? What did his family do to you? Screenshot of video from Traffic SG Facebook page Naturally, the driver gets offended by her rude comments and starts shooting his mouth off to her as well. He questions her marital status out of nowhere. I honestly thought he was going to talk about another part of the male body. The lady goes on to tell the driver that "if he represents what Singaporean men are, no one needs to get married." By now, you should be curious as to how the lady looks like. Throughout the whole video, the spotlight is on the driver and she doesn’t show her face, but we found her.   Taken from balispiritfestival.worldsecuresystems.com Wait a minute. Anybody have anything to say? Of course they do! Image taken from Traffic SG Facebook page Me and you sister!  If you want the driver to follow your preferred route in the future then here's a helpful suggestion from a member of the public.   Image taken from Traffic SG Facebook page Very wise words. The lady's Facebook page have since been deactivated. ----------------------------------------------- Worried that you too might be an obnoxious passenger? Check out the most irritating behaviors that we face as drivers! -----------------------------------------------

MX-5 lady left note to criticise Volvo driver’s parking. Plot twist made me Google meaning of the word “Sanctimonious”.

Imagine parking your car like you passed your driving test on the first try and then returning to your car with this note on the windscreen -     Did you really park like an idiot? Who left the note? Did they get hurt while getting out of their car from the passenger side? So many questions. To the car camera for answers.     Here’s our supposedly wronged and potentially injured party arriving in an MX-5. Very good choice of car. After 30 seconds of parking and having to exit the car from the passenger side, the lady comes out to take a photo of the “offending” Volvo S60.     She spends about 10 seconds taking photos of the car from multiple angles. We know the Volvo S60 looks good from any angle. After walking one round inspecting the car like it was at the front gate of an army camp, she leaves her note.     Did the Volvo driver park like an idiot? Well here’s the tea.     I can hear you screaming: “Lies! The driver probably took this photo at another lot! No way someone will park in that spot! Not even the nimble Miata!” Here’s the other photo.     At least the Volvo driver was nice enough to mask out the MX-5’s plate.   Here’s the full video uploaded on SG Road Vigilante:   And “Sanctimonious” means “making a show of being morally superior to other people.”   ----------------------------------------------- Impressed by how the MX-5 can fit into snug places? Here are some for sale.   Or maybe you're leaning more on the innocent Volvo S60? We've got you covered here too!   -----------------------------------------------

VEP delayed till 2020 or maybe when your grandchildren have children

If you've been one of the "kan cheong" people waiting to get your Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) approved before driving into Malaysia, here's some good news for you - The implementation of the VEP scheme will only commence next year. According to The Straits Times, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke claimed that the delay is due to the system's inability to cope with the exponential number of vehicles that needed to install the RFID tag. It seems that many Singaporeans are not surprised by this delay. It’s not the first time that there has been a delay with the implementation of the VEP and you can be sure people were quick to call that out.  And some people make pretty sound arguments. Wait, does this mean that Singaporean car owners with the RFID tags did the application and probably wasted a weekend queueing up in Malaysia for nothing? Sounds about right.  Malaysia Boleh? Case closed. ----------------------------------------------- Still wondering how to get your VEP? We went through the entire process so you can have this handy guide here! -----------------------------------------------
