Now this will probably open up a can of worms or two. Who do you reckon is in the wrong? The cyclist or the driver of the Audi?

Filmed by the cyclist on 5th of July along mandai road, a white Audi A1 could be seen pulling out of a small lane and into the path of a cyclist who was doing less than 30km/h on his bike.

According to the source SG Road Vigilante, the guys there reckoned the car did not notice or did not care about the cyclist, barely cutting him off.

What do you guys think?

Was it a close call or an error on the part of the Audi driver? Or was this a simple case of the cyclist letting his ego take control of him and not riding defensively for his own safety?

The cyclist was going way too fast and was almost on the centre of the lane. He should be keeping closer to the left, in which case no issue with the Audi driving into the lane.

Just saw a PMD travelling at around 30~40KM/hr on a pedestrian walkway today.

Cyclist has right of way.

I wish he teach the car a very good lesson by letting the car bang him.

He don't give way and show a bit of patience let the driver pay the price

and suffer for his mistake lah.

If you are in the right you have to fight for it.

Cyclist have to take a stand and defend his position.

"I am surprise by the volume of subjects that can be raised in an open n shut case of basic road regulation. A bicycle on the road is a vehicle (paying road tax or not does not change that). All road regulations apply to it as per any other vehicle. The cyclist does not “think” he has the right of way. He HAS the right of way.
it is strange that some can advocate civic mindedness to the cyclist yet blatantly ignore the fact that the Audi driver puts the cyclist at risk of bodily harm by ignoring a simple traffic rule.

How the Audi overtakes, if he choose to do so, is another subject matter altogether. If overtaking cannot be done safely, then don’t. We all learn that in driving school.

If we change the bicycle to a slow moving motorcycle or heavy vehicle, that will not make any difference to the application of road regulation in this case. Audi gives way to vehicle going straight.
Yes, the cyclist will suffer a lot more physcially in the event of an accident. That will place a higher duty of care on cars to look out and give way to more vulnerable road users."

The rules state clearly the cyclist must keep to the left of lane. In this case it was not.

The rules clearly state cyclists must keep to the extreme left of the lane. In this case, based on camera footage, it was almost veering towards centre of lane. Unless the camera was fixed on an extension jutting out 3 feet to the right of the bicycle.

To put it more blatantly to this cyclist - "This is not your grandfather's road"

Does the position of the bicycle on the road makes any difference to the basic right of way rule here?
it might not be his grandfather’s road. Neither is it the Audi’s grandfather’s road. Nor my grandfather’s road. Or may I ask you less-blatantly “Your grandfather’s road?”

Road Traffic Act — specifically Chapter 276, Section 140, aka Road Traffic (Bicycles) Rules
“every bicycle shall be ridden close to the left hand edge of the roadway and in such a manner as not to obstruct vehicles moving at a faster speed”
Can you cite any obstruction of faster vehicle in above video?

It is clear case of which vehicle has the right of way. What is with the grasping at straws just because your sense of entitlement to nobody’s grandfather’s road?

The cyclist has the right of way but he should cycle more defensive since any mistake by the driver could be deadly for him.

His grandfather road lor, ride at the middle of the road. He is the main cause of the incident.

  • Is 'tiny living' really irrelevant in Singapore?

I discussed the possibility of living in tiny houses in Singapore in an earlier blog post. But as we know, it isn't an option to begin with – no thanks, of course, to our lack of land space.  Someone also pointed out that the idea of tiny houses is "romanticised" – which, I don't deny (but hey, that's why it's a dream). While it's clear tiny houses aren't going to work out here, the concept of 'tiny living' is; not just physically but also mentally. Anyone who has lived enough years lo
