Taxi zooms off after getting hit by oncoming Tour De Changi cyclist

The age-old debate on whether cyclists should be allowed on the road continues.

Watch this video, to find out why the debate never ends:

The incident happened along Nicoll Drive, in the vicinity of Changi Beach Park.

The video was from the cyclist's perspective, who was cycling relatively fast at the said location.

What happened?

As the cyclist approached a junction, a Comfort Delgro taxi emerged from the filter lane.

However, the taxi is seen not stopping at the stop line.

The cyclist's fast speed, coupled with his late reaction caused him to be unable to stop in time. As a result, he ended up colliding against the side of the taxi.

Yes, having a set of good brakes for a bicycle or car is necessary, but what is more important is to practice defensive riding/driving at all times.

Upon seeing how much the inconsiderate taxi driver inched out to the main road, the cyclist should have either slowed down or swerved away from the taxi.

No, don't tell me, "You think they fix Brembo?". If the cyclist's brakes cannot perform at the speed at which his bike is capable of going, don't ride it at all - It is a safety hazard to the cyclist and other road users.

That's like having drum brakes on your Honda Civic Type R 🙄

I can't stop stressing the importance of defensive riding.

The aftermath

Shortly after the collision, the drivers of a black Porsche and white BMW could be seen stopping to help the injured cyclist.

Below is an account of the cyclist's experience:

My experience with comfort cab last Saturday the 7th of August 16:30 coming down the bridge from Changi Village/Nicoll Drive. The cab driver took off, leaving me laying on the road and only returned 5 minutes later after he noticed that he was seen by other car drivers. Luckily 2 people stopped that came from the carpark to help me and my bike off the road. When I watched my full video, I saw multiple cars driving by me without even bothering to slow down or to stop and help. I will always stop when there are accidents and or if people are injured. No matter cyclist, cars or pedestrians. Now let's see how long it takes to get my medical and bicycle expenses paid.

A special thanks to the 2 guys who helped me and my bike get off the road

Kudos to those 2 guys that helped the injured cyclist!!

Yes, cycling may be a fun hobby that keeps you healthy. However, it is not worth risking your life over it.

If you really want to "enjoy" the speed and ride on the road, remember to wear proper safety and equipment. Whenever possible, maintain a safe speed and slow down near junctions.

PS. Did I mention how apt the NDP2021 theme song, "Road ahead" was in the video?

Going by this logic, 100% of vehicle owners who accidentally rear end others should not drive at all, since their brakes cannot perform at the speed the drivers are going at. 🙄

Bicycle brakes are not as strong as vehicles and cyclists have the gauge the risk of braking too hard and flying forward, or apply sufficient braking but with increased braking distance.

  • Is 'tiny living' really irrelevant in Singapore?

I discussed the possibility of living in tiny houses in Singapore in an earlier blog post. But as we know, it isn't an option to begin with – no thanks, of course, to our lack of land space.  Someone also pointed out that the idea of tiny houses is "romanticised" – which, I don't deny (but hey, that's why it's a dream). While it's clear tiny houses aren't going to work out here, the concept of 'tiny living' is; not just physically but also mentally. Anyone who has lived enough years lo
