Lorry fails to conform to red light and t-boned car at a discretionary right turn along Yio Chu Kang

TL;DR - Lorry collided into an oncoming car who was making a discretionary right turn at the junction of Yio Chu Kang and Buangkok Green.

Every road user should know that discretionary right turns are the cause of many road accidents in Singapore. Hence, why they are being slowly phased out.

But, back to discretionary right turns. Just watch this 69-second shocker to see what I mean.

So, what happened?

The car was making a discretionary right turn and failed to notice the lorry that was accelerating past the amber light. This resulted in a collision where both parties met at the juncture.

Such junctions are common sites for traffic accidents due to the blind spots that both drivers face.

Hence, to curb the fatalities at discretionary turns, LTA has stepped in by integrating close to 700 red-amber-green (RAG) turn signals in January 2022. With the RAG scheme, motorists have to wait for the turning arrow to become green before turning right, which reduces the likelihood of collision with oncoming traffic. Seems like this junction has seen quite a few accidents.

Nevertheless, we hope everyone involved is safe.

Takeaway

At the end of the day, no matter how many road safety precautions are set in place, it is still every road user’s responsibility to exercise discretion and be vigilant on the road.

Lorry fails to conform to red light

and

the lorry that was accelerating past the amber light

is a contradiction.

One is not illegal.

The writer has to make up his mind which it is.

  • Tennis: Beautiful game that doesn't know how to count

Wimbledon just concluded yesterday (congrats Sinner!), and it's a reminder of how much I enjoy tennis as a sport. I used to play it some (wasn't particularly good), and still tangentially follow it nowadays (the Roland Garros final this year between Alcaraz and Sinner is an all-time classic).  There's something intrinsically mesmerising about the sport, I think even for spectators who have never picked up a racquet. At first glance, it may seem like just two people (or four, but doubles is

How are we already in June?

During lunch with my mother a couple of weeks back over yong tau foo, I was asked about my opinion on the latest NDP song. And of course, as expected of any chronically insular millennial, my reaction was: “Huh? There’s a new NDP song?” But of course there is. And I say this not to disparage the wonderful songwriters and musicians that provide an anthem to remember the nation’s birthday by annually, but to knock into my own mind the harsh reality: We’re already in mid-June.  It fe

    Big things are funny things

Being anywhere tangentially close to current affairs news right now is deeply depressing. In so many ways, the world seems like it's going to s*it.  In a bid to escape all that and cheer myself up a little, I've been recently amused and moderately infatuated with randomly huge things. Here are just a couple that make me chuckle:  Yup, the world's largest chair. I also find the name of the company, XXXLutz, incredibly funny and more than a little blue.  Otto the ot

The enduring charm of Singapore wet markets

I know I’m idealising it all - as a not-so-young millennial that can’t remember the last time he cooked a full meal for himself. (That was probably a good two years ago.) But moving on slightly from morning walks now, the space I’ve found myself frequenting when I feel like I need a break from the routines of everyday life (or to simply clear my head) isn’t the park. It’s the basement level of Punggol Plaza. That a wet market even exists here should be surprising. Punggol, after all, is qui
