Resurrecting this thread to discuss hybrid and electric vehicles now that petrol price is on the way up.

First off, any MCFers with experience of driving hybrids can share on

1. Reduced fuel costs. Ie. How much less vs conventional

2. What are maintenance costs like

3. What recommended models such as Outlander PHEV, Estima hybrid etc

Hi i would like to share on my experience of driving my friend's honda vezel hybrid.

Compared to the petrol vezel which averages 11-13km/l the hybrid was able to go to 22km/l fuel efficiency,

Quoting him " i would say my fuel costs have halved" as his previous civic 1.8 gave him about 12km/l at best. It also reduced his time spent on topping up petrol from 3 times a week to just once 1 time a week at most to a full tank!

Maintenance costs i did ask him whether it'd be more expensive cause theres like more hybrid components like hybrid batteries and the hybrid system inverter but his workshop manager gave him quite a reasonable answer that he quoted on.

The workshop manager of this hybrid specialist workshop that he bought his warranty from, stated that only the petrol components of the car need regular servicing such as "engine oil change and oil filter change" thats cause the hybrid system is all electrical components and wiring there is little or no wear and tear, as compared to the petrol components that need regular servicing.

The regenerative brakes also allow the cars brake pads to last longer as the hybrid system does most of the engine braking using its electric motors.

Hmm recommended models i would say that Toyota's hybrid system is still the best as they have started it since 1997 and have sold their technology to other big names such as audi, Bmw. They are using the reliable nickel metal hybrid battery which toyota boasts a full 10 years warranty so i would go for their cars too.

Current models to look at would be:

1. Toyota : Prius 2016/ Prius Prime (plug in), Toyota E-CHR (coming soon) Estima Hybrid 2016 (coming soon)

2  Honda : Vezel Hybrid (x/ Z or RS), Honda Oddysey Hybrid . Honda Shuttle Hybrid 2016

3. Mitsubishi: Outlander PHEV ( although in my opinion they dont really have much of an advancement in the hybrid scene)

Hi,

My daughter is doing a high school research project about hybrid/electric cars and whether the government policies (like the CEVS rebate) is helping to encourage people to buy these models. If you are an owner of a hybrid/electric car, could you please spare a few minutes to take this quick survey: www.tinyurl.com/greencarsurvey

All responses are anonymous and will not be shared publicly as it will only be used for educational purposes. She would greatly appreciate all the help she can get.

Many thanks once again.

Any recommendation for Ms Sun? Let's hear it.

There is no such thing as an eco-friendly car.  Cars are very pollutive to drive and maintain.
