It happened to my previous 8th gen Honda Cheebic. The roof lining started to fall apart on the 6th year of ownership. I know bmw on average 5 years need to replace.

My guess yours is an European car. Happened 3 times to my cars, all ang moh ( but not Swedes) cars. Japanese ones never had this problem.

3 out of 5 volvos...have this issue.

Thanks to Watwheels recommendation to Hormes whereby simi diy skeletons also have. I foresee a frequent visit there going forward.

Here’s some before and after pictures of my first attempt at such cheapo diy fix. Hope it holds though.

Under $14 vs $300... I’m not fussy with the shabby touches

My turn to do something about the roof lining sagging, haiz. Can I ask how come there are those pin-like marks after you DIY stick it back? And how is the glue sprayed on, as in you cut some holes through? TIA.

The “pimples” were the disintegrated sponge on the inside...can be smoothen out with your palm or a ruler. I used A4 paper to do that as I found the wider spread was better.

The linen was tucked into the side panels and the interior light mounting. Just need to pull it out slowly then you may spray your heart out. Do be generous with the spray. I had to do it three times to get it to stay glued.

However, better to place used plastic shower curtain over the seats otherwise the sticky disintegrated sponge would drop down and dirty the seats especially if they are light in colour.

ok thanks very much. Really dunno how it will turn out but the alternative really cost a lot more. Fingers crossed.

Just prep everything that you need and plan the sections to deal with slowly. It’s quite satisfying when it’s done. Especially when I know I’ve saved some dough...not very nice also fine. A perfect car has almost the same scrap value as junky one anyway

Thanks. I was thinking about it last night and if I really get down to it, I may get one of those rollers like those used for painting walls.

One thing to ask you, from your experience, the pimple effect is because of the sponge reacting with the 3M adhesive spray chemical, or already like that even before you start? I think it is the latter but just ask for your experience.

TIA.

I only realised those “pimples” were the disintegrated bits of the sponge used for sound insulation when I removed part of the lining off the side panel. I hazard a guess it’s the heat and moisture overtime caused that.

Don’t worry about those bits...you may press them back into the existing sponge easily even with bare palm.

Mr Foo first did my E200 AvantGarde on the driver seat auto seat fault, i reckon the actuator kaputed, C&C  quoted me $1500 for new actuator and labour.

I went looking for Ah Foo, ( my old friend now and old customer ), he changed a new Bosch Actuator including labour & installation in less than 25 mins, cant remb how much it cost, it's was about $100/ . We don't have to be Rich to be Clever.

He and his brother specialises in Car Audio accessories; car seat, leather and synthetic fabric roofing installation , cannot compared to more established set-up, their biz is honest to goodness, rare find. The shop is next to a corner coffee-shop. [:p]
