Icekitten Clutched November 10, 2006 Share November 10, 2006 A few yrs back, hubby was driving and we were entering a similar bend which connects two expressways (can't remember which one, only remember we were coming from Choa Chu Kang). The same thing happened, the car started to drift and head towards the railings. He did not brake but instead quickly counter-steered (which should be the right method, not braking) and we managed to just miss the railing and get back in direction. At that time, he was driving a nearly 10-yr-old Seat Ibiza Hatchback with lousy tyres (very little tread left) and that, plus it was raining heavily at the time, caused the 'drifting'. And we were entering the bend at 40-50kmh coz of the low visibility, which is within the speed limit. Perhaps it's not very nice to criticise the driver's handling or assume he was speeding. My personal experience shows that you don't exactly have to enter a bend at high speed for such an accident to happen. Perhaps his tyres had really poor grip. But anyway, this shows drivers how important a good set of tyres is. ↡ Advertisement

Dawnlite Neutral Newbie November 11, 2006 Share November 11, 2006 That road is indeed very dangerous. I know of friend of friends who actually flew over the barrier while trying to corner at 120km/h at that exit..stupid thing to do until whole car flipped over the barrier down to the bottom...lucky he only injured, never die... wow...this is not 2F2F liao... is James Bond 007 ... Herong Neutral Newbie November 11, 2006 Share November 11, 2006 eh...... abs brakes does not help much in this case? i thought it should help alot in this case?
Sony 1st Gear November 11, 2006 Share November 11, 2006 (edited) Not really.. when the car is in a bend already, having the brake will uneven the force used to steer the car and effectively cause it to tail out... Aquaplaning might occurs at this point as well. What he shd do to reduce speed and gain more traction control is to use engine brake by downshifting. If it's auto, maybe can shift it to D3 or 2. Anyway , this is just my wild suggestion and might not be correct coz so far I have not encounter such situation myself. Moreover my car have enough of electronic brain like ESP, ABS, etc... to let me use my own brain. Edit: I realised that you mentioned it was ABS brake. i misread it as "abt brake". ABS does help to ensure that the brake does not lock itself up but it does not totally eliminate the aquaplaning effect. Typhoon125 3rd Gear November 11, 2006 Author Share November 11, 2006 doubt abs was even activated, just too wet and heavy rain on down slope right bend....
Icekitten Clutched November 12, 2006 Share November 12, 2006 In such situations, your reaction has to be fast. If my hubby had just wondered for a second what he should do, we would prob have crashed into the railings. But sometimes I worry that he gets overconfident of his own driving. And that can be disastrous even for a good driver too.

Oneshot1kill Neutral Newbie November 12, 2006 Share November 12, 2006 Once a City, always a City. It doesn't look 'fierce' no matter what visual add-ons or stickers there are. Place a stupid driver who imagines he's some gungho racer in a pt-A to pt-B car meant for housewives, this is what you get.
