Boyboy 1st Gear January 16, 2007 Share January 16, 2007 First, let me begin with a disclaimer, I neither sell nor am affiliated to anyone who sells "snake oils". I have never sold or received any commission for such products. The most I am "guilty" of are using and letting people try them out. I notice a number of forumers have lambasted certain products which are popularly regarded as "snake oil" even though they have not tried it. How do you know for sure it doesn't work, until you have tried it? Even so, is it installation or other factors peculiar to your particular vehicle? Take for e.g, X-reV. Perhaps in this case it is more of doubting the manufacturer's claims rather than slamming the product itself. I have to agree that the UOA was somewhat questionable. However, with so many good reviews, I wouldn't mind trying to see what the hype is about. The only deterrent is the price. Or if truly negative USER REVIEWS are heard. Only then can I know for myself this product is BS or good stuff. Another e.g, which I used but didn't work out too well, BUT IT WORKED FOR ME (for awhile ). The SURBO. This one is rather more controversial as it is a pretty simple device. Hard to see how it can improve power and pickup, and Heng's explaination isn't exactly compatible with mainstream physics that u learn at O or A levels. MONSTER air charger, another product which is sometimes classified as snake oils. I have not tried it, and will not. But can I say that it's snake oil? NO! Did an credible testing body verify it's efficiacy? Not that I know, but I would suspend judgement until such a time that it has been tested, or when I have tried it for myself. The most I can say is that "IMHO, this product doesn't seem too credible. I won't bother spending on this as an upgrade." But that's just my (pretty worthless opinion). Motor UP, which I use and which my dad used to supply to certain retail outlets (no longer, so pple condemn or buy like crazy i frankly dun give a sh|t.) http://www.ftc.gov/opa/1999/04/motorup5.htm Claims were "unsubstantiated", so maybe it doesn't "reduce wear by up to 50%". However, unbiased individuals (my gf and a colleague) on two separate occasions and with two separate vehicles have reported that the engine became quieter and smoother. My subjective opinion is that power has improved a tad, may not be worth asking price (but hey i got it for free ). Long term damage? my dad's previous camry used it for 3+ yrs clocking close to 170000km. no issues. So it had a positive impact in these few cases Beginning to think i'm promoting snake oils or even trying to justify my use of them? I feel sad for u then. My hope is that some of you out there can be a little more open minded. Not say to go and TRY each and every snake oil out there. But if there is a new product, or if people report positive results from a "snake oil", step back and think, is it REALLY snake oil? Perhaps not! And for pple who condemn sth without having tried it... ↡ Advertisement
Kiss29 Neutral Newbie January 16, 2007 Share January 16, 2007 I agree to you points. Just like Multi Vits. There are SO MANY out there. People still buy them thinking it will help them in their life. Some get better, some get sick. Snake oil are not for everyone. Its effectiveness is subject to different equipment and different user. 1) Eating protein power alone will not help you to get srong big muscles. You will need to work your muscles till fatigue for the powder to work its magic. 2) Putting a super duper engine oil/additives will entend your engine life if you intend to scrap your car in 3years time. So there is no wrong or right....its just different perceptions between people. Some say Allah is god, while some say Jesus is......they are both correct in their own ways. Thats the beauty of life.....jsut enjoy it and stop worrying.
Boyboy 1st Gear January 16, 2007 Author Share January 16, 2007 i like the vitamins analogy. for me i stress out i need to boost immune system. someone with healthy lifestyle may not need. and another person may simply not care abt his own health. all are personal choices. to those who defend their snake oils (as i once did), i say spend ur time on better things, like enjoying the "snake oils" an e.g. my dad is critical of bodykit and ANY mods in general. sometimes i feel he shd listen to what he tells me abt being open-minded. whatever the case, pple wanna spend, so be it lor.. unless the mod is illegal or will cause damage then there's really not much issue
Zanter 3rd Gear January 16, 2007 Share January 16, 2007 Let me list what oils i have tried b4 and the effects. 1. Tornado/Twister air intake- Suppose to swirl the air & give turbulance etc- No use. 2. Grounding- Helps with aircon cos the aircon fan spins fast. FC no change. 3. Motor-up - No effect. Nice adverts thou 4. Broquet- Helps FC 10%. I cant explain why it works but it does, at least for me. Results may vary from car to car thou. 6. Voltage stabiliser- Wont mention brands but since u can DIY, i think helps FC a bit 2-5%. 7. Air injection- these devices leak air into manifold & add turbulance- no effect 8. KNN airfilter- Nice sound, powerwise helps a bit. FC about the same. 9. F21-21 additive- put into fuel & claimed nano technology- No effect, which explains why it is no longer sold? 10. Teflon additive- No effect despite all the hype years ago. 11. Quality oil- This helps. Thinner oil reduced FC maybe 2-5%. 12. Mich Energy tires- Effect not noticable but decent tires, fairly quiet. 13. Mothballs- they say mothballs aka naptha will clean the fuelline & dissolve carbon. No effect. 14. Cold air intake- Helps a bit, seat of pants power improved on hot days. Fc not change much. 15. Neulogy ignition wires- no effect. Some test showed deproved FC & power. 16. Spark plugs- no effect but just feels nice . Just use the cheap ones. Disclaimer: Just my personal experiences cos some these snake oils effect will vary with different cars so just cos it doesnt work for me doesnt mean it doesnt work for u & vice versa. ↡ Advertisement
