Thinking it's safe to drill your disc brake rotors? Mechanic assured that it won't crack? This Kia lover got his front rotors drilled, and the disc cracked!

Evidence follows...

Cannot anyhow drill.. at high temperature, the disc will break apart.. Very danagerous..

How come that Kia lover gone nuts ?? Now he has to spent more money. All performance discs are tested under vigourous conditions.. if so simple, where got market for it.

Yes, a search on the web will show many people warning against this practice. shakehead.gif When it comes to brakes, better don't anyhow pray pray... The lower end cross-drilled rotors are not that expensive anyway, provided they one for the particular make and model.

Yes...but heard that though it is not safe to drill your OEM rotors, it is ok to slot it. Although I seriously have my doubts, might as well go buy Brembo.

I was *seriously* toying with the idea of drilling the discs, maybe not so many holes, a bit like those on the current S-class. Even got the contact and quote from some forum guy who did it.

Yeah that Kia lover couldn't find x-drilled rotors for his Mentor, likewise there's no drilled rotors for my Sephia in the market also! [:(]

Please note that:

all original cross drilled brake discs in the market are cast with the holes rather than being drilled. Drilling after casting will cause heat affected zone around the holes and this would develop heat affected stress concentration around the holes. Hence it is most likely that it will crack once induced with the stress and heat from braking process.

So only use original cross drilled brake discs not those being drilled by workshops or users. Brakes is important to the safety of the car...dont play play.... [nod][thumbsup]

Any workshop does slotting of the rotors? Is it actually save to drill "halfway" or slot "halfway"?

If you must have x-drilled/slotted discs, get new ones. It's not a very nice thought that the brake fails when you need it most! [sweatdrop]

Cheers!
