Saw a 04/2005 Renault Megane 1.6L auto car from a direct owner and the agree price is $42K.

OMV is $20700

COE is $18300

Paper value now is approximately $31.5K.

Looking at driving for a year and intend to export the car at the 3rd year.

Like to ask whether is this a good buy since French car body does not command a good value. Have anyone of you ppl exported the Megane body and how much you got for the car body [gossip]

Brand new Megane 1.6A is now $66.9K.

Save $24.9K for a 23 mth old car. Why not?

If you scrap just before the 3rd yr, you shd get back COE remaining value of $12,820, paper value $16500. Body $5,000 = $34K.

So you lose $8K for 12 mth usage.

You do your sums to determine if you are comfortable with this.

* But if you use it till scrap (10th yr), your annual dep is only $3,800.

I do agree with your analysis, but hearsay that Renault maintenance is not cheap but since there is still another 1 yr warranty left and given the mileage is around 40,000km, should be quite safe. Many ppl are asking me to buy used Jap cars which is more reliable with lower maintenance. But I cannot stand the Altis, Vios, Lancer that can be seen everywhere on the road, though they are good cars.

Yep $3.8K depreciation if used till 10 yrs for a conti car is cheap. I am looking at used car as I wanted liquidity in the event if any misfortune happen and do not want to loss big time associated with buying a new car. Had make quite a few mistakes buying cars previously and loss money big time. Nowadays tend to be more careful..

Not worth cos body of Megane is worth a couple of thousands only.

To my understanding, it is ard $4-5k a month ago.

If you purchase at $42k, it is as good as body costs $10.5k

$4-5K for a 2 yrs old Megane body... let say if I will to scrap it at the 3rd year, isn't it gonna be only $3-4K, my colleague's yr 2003 Corolla car body is getting $9-10K and another 3 yr old sunny car body is getting $7-$8K.

I have called a few used car dealers for an indication and the offer is very low <$40K. Looks like I have to think through the deal. Believe the owner loss big time as he paid $75K for the car, loss $33K for 2 yrs of driving.

Maybe, I'll just lookout for a Jap car now..

It depends on your luck. If it's problem free, good for u.

Getting it off your hands should be ok depending on how much ppl willing to offer u. But usually for these kind of car the demand is not high.

It's not worth IMO although u only need it for a year.

I think the Megane also have a few problems according to my friend who own 1.

Heard that too... that's why only want to keep it for another 1 yr and export after the warranty expire. Looks like have to rethink this option since so many negative review on this car.

Yep that's a fact for Conti cars.

From an economical point of view, a Jap car is a wiser decision.

Hi Sportser,

If you use till the 10th year, the low annual dep of $3.8K gives you some leeway for repairs if need to.

After 3rd yr, can send to Espace Auto for servicing & repairs - cheaper than agt. They specialise in Renault cars.
