Auto car: Hand brake or change gears 1st??

Hi all,

 

I've a question re: the standard method (ie. tp test standard) in parking/ moving off for auto cars. I'm asking on behalf of my wify who's taking her class 3A.

 

What is the sequence required?? I'd think it shd be as follows, since i find it the safer method.

 

Parking:

 

Handbrake up --> put to P

 

Moving off:

 

Put to D --> Handbrake down

 

But some instructors hv it as the other way round? Wud appreciate yr expert advice...

u didnt mention foot brake... do u step on it at all while car is stationary? always step yr foot brakes and pump it a few times when u have just started yr car before relasing the handbrake and changing to D

I think it's no different from manual test.

 

Moving off:

Shift to 1st gear, half clutch then release handbrake.

 

Parking:

Stop. Pull hand handbrake then shift to neutral.

 

Theory book have it? I dunno, pass long time ago.

when parking, I put to P then I pull handbrake..

when moving off, I put to D then put down handbrake..

I thought the way shld be the same as driving manual..

Ya lor, tat's what i do & i told wify the same. But some instructors (not all?!) told her other way round. So we're all !!

 

I also pass many years ago on class 3. So dunno the standard for 3A.

 

Anyone juz pass 3A can share share??

--> to me it ensures the car don't move while shifting to P

 

Moving off

Step footbrake, release handbrake, D, release footbrake

--> to me it is a smoother move-off..also dun seem to stress out the handbrake cos the load all on the footbrakes

 

dunno what's the textbook write tho'..

i do both ways.. whichever way that pops into my mind first.. most of the time i remember for parking is, put to P then Handbrake..

y need to pump the foot brakes for few time? any purpose?

General rule of the thumb.

 

If stopping, brakes are the first, everything else is after. i.e. footbrake, handbrake, move to P for auto or N for manual

 

If moving off its the opposite. brakes are the last to go. i.e. shift into gear, release handbrake, release foot brake.

 

Its done this way to ensure safety. In auto's this also has a second purpose of putting less strain on the transmission.

Actually, TP test and the kind of things we really do is very different. TP test are always asking and seeing the 'Safe' things that they think is a protocol. So, just do accordingly. Well, for the car that I am driving, the Civic, when attempting to move off, you will have to step the brake, in order to shift from P to D. Likewise, stopping. There is a locking mechanism for the P gear that is only released when the brake is stepped. So, it does not really matter whichever way you do first in real life rights?

 

Anyway, in an event where you actually drop the handbrake only after you have shifted to D, without stepping the brakes (if it can be done so) won't you be unknowingly wearing out the handbrake? That's just my thought.

 

Back to your wife, always do what the instructor tells her to when in a TP test. It is only them that knows exactly what the TPs are looking out for...

True. For gated autos like Integra, Mercedes etc, we have to step on the brakes first to engage/disengage gears/neutral/reverse etc.

 

So moving off:

step brakes

engage D

release parking brakes

 

Stopping:

step brakes, vehicle comes to halt, keep foot on brakes

disengage D to P

engage parking brakes

Ok, here's the 'standard' way my wify's instructor told her:

 

Parking:

 

Handbrake up --> put to P

 

Moving off:

 

Put to D --> Handbrake down

 

Which is wat I thought it should be since it's safer with hand brake up when u change gears... well, at least for L platers.

 

Anyway, OT abit, wify juz passed her tp test yesterday! It's her 2nd attempt.
