2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 revealed

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2018-chevrolet-corvette-zr1-revealed

With 755bhp and 715lb ft, this is the more focused version the most powerful Corvette yet

2019-corvette-zr1-worldpremier-02.jpg?it

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has been revealed in Dubai. Its 755bhp and 715lb ft of torque make the car the most powerfulCorvette – and most powerful Chevrolet – built to date.

Chevrolet claims a top speed of more than 210mph, although no other performance figures have been provided. Acceleration is likely to be around 3.0sec, however, given the car’s 1598kg kerb weight.

The ZR1 is available with either a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox, equipped with paddle shifters, marking the first time an automatic has been offered in the ZR1. Also optional is the high wing, which increases downforce by an estimated 431kg.

This high wing is two-way adjustable, although it reduces the car’s top speed, and comes as part of a ZTK Performance Package, including a front splitter and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. The chassis is also specifically tuned with the pack.

A low wing package decreases downforce in comparison, but it’s with this package that the claimed 210mph top speed can be achieved. Both packages feature a front underwing - a first for a General Motors car - that increases downforce. Both of the rear wings are attached to the car’s chassis – something Chevrolet claims will increase strength and stability.

Under the bonnet, the 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine, codenamed LT5, has a supercharger that's 52% larger than that in the Corvette ZO6 and is more efficient. Another GM first is the car’s dual fuel injection system, comprising primary direct injection as well as port injection.

Inside, the ZR1 gets leather-trimmed bucket seats, a performance data recorder and a Bose sound system as standard. Chevrolet will release more details nearer to the car’s on-sale date.

No price has yet been given for the ZR1, although sales will begin in the spring. A handful is expected to be imported to the UK, although no official imports are likely.

The 755bhp Corvette ZR1 convertible is here

2019-chevrolet-corvette-zr1-convertible-

Supercharged hardcore 'Vette now comes in drop-top form. Imagine the NOISE

Just two weeks after the quite mad coupe comes this, the Corvette ZR1 convertible. Yep, no special name or confusing spelling of the word spider. Just ‘convertible’ with a lower-case C. Simple.

It uses the same 755bhp supercharged 6.2-litre V8 as the coupe, with the option of seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearboxes. With the auto, the hard top has a top speed of 212mph and does 0-60mph in sub-3.0secs, but that’s with a special aero package.

Chevrolet says the convertible will still have a top speed ‘over 200mph’, though, which is probably more than enough. And all that unholy supercharger whine and V8 roar – unencumbered by a roof – should make up for any performance deficit.

Chevy also says the says the rigidity of the Corvette’s aluminium chassis means no extra strengthening has been required, and that the convertible’s only structural mods over the coupe are to fit the folding roof and reposition the seatbelt mounts. So their suspension tune is the same and the convertible weighs just 27kg more than the coupe. That’s a couple of extravagant drive-thru orders.

It also costs just $4,000 more, at $123,995. Or about £92,000 ar current exchange rates, which is startling value for a car so quick and powerful. But then value has always been the Corvette way. A 215bhp-lighter Audi R8 Spyder is over $50,000 more in the States…

Does the hardest-cored Corvette make sense with its roof opened up? It’s the first ZR1 convertible since the Seventies, which might suggest not. And you wouldn’t expect Porsche to trot out a 911 GT2 RS with a soft top. But then that noise really ought to shout over any our doubts.

Let us know your thoughts below, and recap on the coupe at this link. Both will be on display at the LA motor show from the end of the week.

Mid engined Corvette coming...

https://www.motor1.com/news/264339/mid-engine-corvette-production-rumor/

mid-engine-corvette-c8r-race-car-spy-pho

The first production units of the mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette could start rolling out of the Bowtie's Bowling Green, Kentucky, factory as soon as September 2019. Industry analyst Auto Forecast Solutions tells Autoline that C7 production would end in August 2019 and the plant would then switch over to the new model the following month.

This rumor doesn't line up well with the previous speculation about mid-engined Corvette production, though. Earlier reports indicated that Chevy had updated the factory so that it was able to assemble both the existing 'Vette and the next-gen model on the same production line. By doing this, the company can continue to fill the demand for the existing, presumably less expensive model and the future one.

The ability to build both versions of the 'Vette at once has allegedly allowed Chevy's Integration Development Team to produce pre-production versions of the mid-engined 'Vette on Fridays when the plant is generally closed.

The September 2019 production start date matches reports of the mid-engined Corvette going on sale for the 2020 model year. The debut could take place much earlier, though, because rumors suggest an unveiling at the North American International Auto Show in January 2019. A trademark registration suggests the name Zora might somehow appear on the new 'Vette – a nod to the original model's father Zora Arkus-Duntov.

At least in racing trim, the mid-engined 'Vette has a turbocharged engine (pictured above), but reports indicate the base version of the road-going model would have a naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8 with around 460 horsepower (343 kilowatts). A 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 with about 650 hp (485 kW) would be available as an upgrade. A rumored range-topping variant allegedly uses a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 making 850 hp (634 kW).

Neutral Newbie

You can see the car here

Introduced three years ago, the Corvette Z06 is powered by a 659bhp compressor motor. and according to the passport it can accelerate to 315 km / h. Not enough? The strategists of the General Motors concern thought the same and brought out an even more extreme modification of the legendary sports car - with the ZR1 prefix. This version was already in cars of the fourth and sixth generations, and the very first Corvette ZR1 was developed with the involvement of Lotus. The new flagship was created in GM on its own, but he clearly will not shame the glory of his ancestors.

https://youtu.be/pDP_luiuzOI

Under the hood is the next generation LT5 engine, based on the LT4 engine found in the Corvette Z06. For the first time, the lower shaft "eight" with a volume of 6.2 liters acquired a combined injection system (into the intake manifold and directly into the cylinders), in addition, the intercooler was improved, the crankshaft was reinforced, and the volume of the Eaton drive supercharger was increased by 52% - up to 2.6 liters. The exhaust system is with active flaps. As a result, the output was raised to 766 hp. and 969 Nm!

https://youtu.be/pDP_luiuzOI

In the new generation Corvette ZR1 for the first time can be two-pedal: a choice of seven-speed "mechanics" and eight-speed "automatic". The suspension on the transverse springs has not fundamentally changed, but the settings, of course, have been revised, and already in the basic configuration there are electronically controlled Magnetic Ride shock absorbers. Carbon-ceramic brake discs are installed by default (front mechanisms - six-piston, rear - four-piston), as well as mixed-size wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (285/30 ZR19 front and 335/25 ZR20 rear).

https://youtu.be/pDP_luiuzOI

Compared to the base Corvette, the ZR1 version has enlarged air intakes, because four additional radiators are installed for reliable cooling of components and assemblies, and there are now thirteen of them in total! For example, the Bugatti Veyron hypercar has only ten of them. Aerodynamics has also been seriously improved. The standard Corvette ZR1 has a so-called low rear wing and a developed front spoiler lip, resulting in 70% more downforce than the Z06. Such a body kit is better suited for high-speed races in a straight line, and for winding tracks, the ZTK Performance package is offered (like the cars in the photos). It includes a two-position "high wing", a large front splitter, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and modified suspension settings.

https://youtu.be/pDP_luiuzOI

The curb weight of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 coupe is 1598 kg, and the maximum speed exceeds 338 km / h. Alas, the company has not yet provided data on the acceleration time, but the machine should exchange a “hundred” at least a little faster than the Z06 version (3.7 s according to the passport). That said, the Corvette ZR1 is still suitable for daily commutes, with heated and ventilated leather seats, Bose audio system, multimedia setup and climate control.

In the United States, sales of the ZR1 modification will begin in the spring of 2018, there is no information about prices and export prospects yet. Recall that the Corvette Z06 can be officially bought in Russia for 8.8 million rubles, so the likelihood of the appearance of the most extreme modification in our country is by no means zero.
