Hello forummers,

Planning to go to Hokkaido in July this year. Wondering if it is gonna to be bloody expensive to do self-drive there? That's what the agency promotes "Best way to enjoy Hokkaido is through self-drive".

Anyone got recommendations?

Don't bother buying that book. No value.

Suggest you check with travel agencies about the cost of vehicle rental in Hokkaido. I went Hokkaido 2 years ago but did not drive. Was told Hokkaido is good for driving around. Within Sapporo, use public transport. You can check with Prime Travel Agency (basement of Hong Leong Building). I booked air tickets and JR passes there when I traveled to Hokkaido. They specialise in Japan.

I did a self drive in 2005.

Car rental is not expensive, finding an english GPS will be a challenge. I went with a friend who reads basic Jap, so we make do with Jap GPS. Hotels are more ex, esp if u opt for the onsen kind. Though ex, i find them good value nonetheless.

Great experience, may go back again. thumbsup.gif
