Bulb "burns" out. Bulb becomes too hot it breaks the current that was lighting it in the first place.

resisitors to step down the car's 12v to ard 1.5v..

otherwise it will burn the LEDs.

T5 LEDs are available commercially so i guess no need to mod already.
