Child car seats

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I have 2 children, age 4 and 6. I am thinking of getting children car seats for them. However, since I also quite often bring my whole family out, the back seat will need to fit another 2 adults. So, I wonder, is there such thing as a twin child car seats which I am thinking of putting in the middle of the back seat and the adult can sit on the both sides?

ask yourself.... how to get it secure?

child seats are designed to be secure on a 1 to 1 base on seat belt loading.

4 & 6? most likely booster seat will do, but depending on heights.

time to change car?wink.gif

twin car seat in middle and 2 adults sit on both side...

normal car seat in middle with 2 adults sit on both side is already a very tight squeeze.

what kind of car are you driving?

Why can't it be safe? Though it may be co-joined, it should be well partitioned with individual safety belt. Just that by joining, some space could be saved as compared to 2 separate ones. Also, by using separate ones you have to secure it with 2 adult safety belts which will make it hard to even fit another adult, not to mention 2...

no.

1 car seat would easily take up the space of an adult seat.

u can actually invest in 1 car seat and nt use them when the adults are there, and let the adults carry them. when the adults are nt around, then u let them sit on the car seat.

or u can prepare to change car.

what do u plan to use to hold the child seat? seat belt rite?

so how to fit a double child seat (if any), while using 1 seat belt? not to mention the other 2 adults tat u are planning to ferry.... got space?

are ya using any child seats presently? if yes, u can easily visualise its not possible & no maker would wanna risk kena'ing for coming out with such a layout.

Cannot la.

Firstly, your rear leg room wide enough to accommodate a twin car seat or not, even if there is such a thing?

Secondly, a single child seat is usually placed on the left or right, behind the front seat, not in the middle of the rear seat.

Thirdly, child seats are not just secured with the seat belt. The base is also resting on the rear seat. For a twin child seat, surely the front half of the child seat will be resting on air and not supported by anything below.

Really, if you try to visualise...it's not possible at all. You either use the child seats when you don't have to ferry anyone else or if you feel that you always have to ferry others as well then your car is not big enough for your needs.

Your kids are 4 and 6. Just get two booster seats for them to use when you don't have to ferry others. Booster seats are inexpensive compared to full baby seats. In 2 yrs' time, your older child will not need the booster anymore when he/she turns 8, provided he/she is at least 1.5m of height and the adult seat belt can be used comfortably.

hi,

i noted that u wrote "I also quite often bring my whole family out, the back seat will need to fit another 2 adults." Does it means that u hv 3 adults (incl yourself) and 2 kids ?

if thats the case, 1 kid in front and the other in rear left( for eg), then the 2 adults take middle and right = OK.

If your front seat is taken => 4 adults + 2 kids = headcount of 6, its not possible to fit all them in ,with kids using car seats, in a normal family sedan.

eg in my case, i hv 2 adults + 1 kid and occasional 2 adults, so still OK. However, eg during CNY, i need to fit in 5 adults + 1kid, then the car seat goes to the boot liao... but in this case, i make a point to drive slowly in the leftmost lane.

Bringing up this thread about child car seat.

My current child seat is old and worn and my youngest boy is outgrowing it. Going to get a good and safe one. Any recommendation? Budget around $400+/-

Btw, it's for a 6 year old.

Thought of using that too but booster seat merely let the child seat higher. It still use the same seat belt that adults use and it's not that secure. My son always put the seat belt across his chest under his armpit because it's always touching his chin which he didn't like. Buckled up like that is as good as no seat belt.

My son @ 4YO already on booster seat liao. Normally "upgrade" from child seat will be booster seat liao unless "hybrid type" which hardly can find unless you go to specialist shop. I can't even find in MotherCare shop.

Actually, according to FD who quoted from a seatbelt industry expert, childseat req to 8 yrs is insuff.

12 yrs is recommended by the industry expert taking into account that diff kids grow at diff rates.

using adult seat belts may coz severe whiplash & even broken necks if the child's height /stature do not meet req.

If really no choice, let the 2 skinnier adults seat behind, 2 kids in centre. And driver drive at =< commercial vehicle speeds & be aware of the vulberabilities & let the driver's driving reflect accdly...

That's why I'm trying to find one that is good enough. I don't really like booster seat. It just raises the height. It's the seat belt that I'm more concern with.

In Europe it's quite easy to find as most parents there will put their children in children car seats. In Singapore, it's not that easy to get a good one meant for older children because everybody just buy the booster seats.
