first the originals were called Mini's; the current production ones by BMW are known as MINI's officially, or BINI's by BMW enthusiasts. BMW bought and sold Rover but retained the rights to the mini brand. All MINIs are made in the UK.

Cooper - the standard.

Cooper S - originally Supercharged, but from the 2007 version its a turbo

Cooper S JCW - John cooper works - a sports tuner

the ONE is an entry level small capacity variant. the original was a detuned 1.6l but was hacked so no difference between between the ONE and the COOPER. In the latest 2007 versions, the ONE is 1.4L so no chance anymore.

Incidentally all have the same bodies, but suspension tuning a, engines differ. Electronics, onboard computers unmistakably BMW. Due to very short length compared to width, the car rides rough, but turns on a dime or like "on rails", and has one of the best holding on turns (measured by lateral g-force) for a commercial car.

The 2007 Cooper s engine is a twin-scroll turbo, and is widely acknowledged as best in class. Its also used in the Peugeot 207 (co-developed). However BMW saved the final piece for their 1-series and excluded Rear Wheel drive.

With the MINIs, BMW literally carved out a niche for high performing small sized cars and set the way for the rest to follow.(e,g, fiat 500 trying to carve out another segment below}.

Go test drive the COOPER S and ask for Portsdown Road tour .... and experience to believe.

Thanks for the very good explanation. I am very intrigued by the MINI's but somehow they still doesnt appeal to me. The car is too small to be practical enough for my daily use. But i can see that mini fans are so enthusiastic about their rides for very good reasons. As for cooper S, i will use that money for alfa instead. [;)]

Another thing, hoping for some enlightening.

What is the difference between Turbo, twin turbo, and supercharged?

MINIs definitely doesn't appeal to many on congested roads. MINI fans are definitely very proud of their mini ride. It's powerful, fast but light, and very small in size. Just the other day on the way home, heard a loud and persistant blast of horn coming from a black mini SG* plate overtook a big SUV on the rightmost lane after AMK exit just after the traffic ease off a little on CTE. What small size brain too.

you must try to believe the MINI - then decide if its for you or not. its geometry (i've compared) is clearly more along the dimensions of a porsche caymans footprint than say a 1 series. i.e. disproportionately wider than longer.

hence the feeling of driver rotating quickly in the eye of the turn - its exhilirating, and turns any road into a a race track - of course helped by power to weight ratio too. very nimble and agile performer and sticks to the road like on rails.

in terms of looks and design it is controversial, however more a classic than sport sedans designs that tend to look they belong to a particular decade.

the feeling is just blast it and go - the MINI's quick manoevres, easy overtaking and extreme pickup turns driving into a game more than a chore. that said, its designed for the driver, not passengers in mind.

size and capacity is meant for singles, young families, and second car owners. driving is about matching personality but yes its a little more provactive than usual. but for modders who try their utmost to squeeze a driver's car from a normal car, the MINI is an instand solution. No mods necessary, if the physics is sound.

the cooper s is a great toy car to play with on congested singapore highways and roads with lots of corners and high traffic. can smoke a lot of cars out there. but it's lacking when it comes to the real muscle. still it is pretty good, out of a 1.6l supercharged engine. "on rails" that is how most owners describe it.

i personally think a good compromise would be the Golf R32.

should be twin scroll turbo.

twin scroll = 2 smaller inlets as opposed to one fat one to collect exhaust gasses to spool turbo earlier. hence negating the disadvantage of the turbo over superchargers - much less turbo lag.

its award winning powerplant can effectively compete with say the 2L golf gti and even put it to shame in tight corners, due to power-weight and chassis dimensions, that makes it somewhat a modal application in its class.

i.e. for a 1.6L car this may perhaps be the best/optimal application of technology for a driving enthusiasts. you'll find lots of unfair reviews between the MINI and other larger capacity cars.
