I lived there for a while. Once you reach the airport, rent a car and drive to your hotel.

From there drive to either sunshine coast or gold coast after spending some time in the city.

Southbank is worth a visit too.

Simple, land at the airport, rent a car with GPS from :

http://www.assetcarhire.com.au

cheaper, and comes with free GPS

if you're looking for a quality car / convertible or something... you can do a web search.

You can basically cover Brisbane City in one day - it's like Shenton Way in a different way.

Visit Lone Pine Sanctuary, take a picture hugging a koala (the only State in australia allowed to do that)

Travel down to Gold Coast, stay some nights there, enjoy the theme parks and roller coasters, and water parks.

Travel further down to Byron Bay (NSW State) and check out the scenery and night scene...

When you have time, travel up north to Noosa, the center of a sought after millionaire's lifestyle.

Enter a seafood shop if you spot one, and buy the pre-cooked cold prawns. Squeeze some lemon on these prawns and enjoy. Add some wine to the menu.

Do not travel above the speed limit. They have hidden mobile speed cameras everywhere.

Some rental cars come with limited mileage (mine was 100km/day) and are cheaper. Those with unlimited mileage are more expensive (unless they have promo). If you're renting the car for many days, u might want to rent those with limited mileage and save some money. I did that when i was there. I rented a car for 14 days. 100km/day x 14 days = 1400km... that's A LOT already. So I didn't see the need for unlimited mileage... quite useless in my case. But if u're renting the car for only a few days, go for unlimited mileage.

If u like shopping, HarbourTown (www.harbourtown.com.au) is a must-go place. They have at least 200 shops there selling branded stuff at factory outlet prices.

Enjoy your holiday! [thumbsup]

Wah. you just reminded me of the great time I had at Gold Coast with those prawns. Wife & I ate there like 3 nights in a row. Even the kids kept clamouring for more.

Must it be strictly brisbane downtown? Maybe you can go to Mt Cootha for a nice aerial view of Brisbane city. Enjoy Ice cream there during winter. Try their river transport (Citycat) and head down to Southbanks to chill, watch movie and have a drink. Watch a Footy game!!

You can drive to Goldcoast for some fun as well, along the way you may detour out to Yatala for their famous Yatala Pies.

Go to sunshine coast for some strawberry picking as its winter season in July. Do some hiking and sightseeing too while you're there. If you are in for an adventure, you may also go for skydiving too.

You can also easily find itineraries for road trip for 10-14days and there will be a lot of great ideas and activities to do. Enjoy your stay in Brisbane.

Brisbane i recall got nothing much in the city leh. And parking was si bey expensive, like in other big aussie cities. This was very obviously plain, as we had basically been parking FOC most of the time for about 10 days in gold coast and mt tamborine, before going to Brisbane and staying for a night before flying back.

Suggest you try to look for cheaper car rental than the major ones based in the airport. Wife found one with good review, and they provide good service by driving the car to meet us at the airport to hand over the car to us with explanation. Then on return, just left the key inside the locked car at the airport carpark. No problem of them making claims against us, as heard from some people's horror stories...

Last time i was down there i drove down the coast, stopped at Gold Coast for a bite and carried on towards Gold Coast Airport. From there i swung inland towards Lamington National Park (nice drive up into the hills and clouds).

Some blur pics of the drive up to Lamington, it turns into a single track road at some spots.
