When reading abt IT talents still in demand .. I can only summarised with my own experience :Our own talents no longer wants to be in this line.

Reason:

1) Pay low even with degree + certs(MCSE,CCNA)

Seriously, have classmates who are offered 2K plus.. and pay is dropping as companies are comparing with foreign talents.

Those who stayed either moved overseas or to another area with minimal involvment in IT and they are ones with best technical knowledge...

2) No career progression within the field.

Can you imagine whole project outsource to china and india??..

So where got need for managers or tech consultants developers??

They just need sales ppl with minimal knowledge and direct the rest to the overseas team.

So what r the remaining posts available ???

For IT wise, I agree with you on that, many of my IT friends has also started to leave the industrial, mainly due to oversupply of cheaper and more qualified FT in the market. This is just the beginning, I believe this will spread to other sectors as well.

The semicon industrial already overtaken by them, true blue locals are very little in there now, guess it is IT next, who knows which industrial will be the after it. Banking might be as heard from my frens there that recently they are starting to see their population growing also.

IT Talents?? someone who can do database, programming? i tot all IT ppl can given enough skills and experience? why do we need FT IT talents?

unless these IT talents can create a new programming language? able to use IT to create invisble shield or something miracles...then i will say they r TALENTED.

my coy also hire plenty of phillipinos to do admin work...its not as if locals cant do it and they r not any cheaper.

Btw, i have an IT degree and not doing IT anymore.

I am very familar with the IT industry. Some IT jobs pay really well. I know of many ppl taking 15-20k a month as IT engineers (not even managers).

When you say pay is low, which IT field are you referring to exactly? Generally jobs like windows admins, unix admins, DB admins, and other kinds of system admins, programmers, networking and such will not get fantastic salary (but still OK). Why? If you noticed, the skills needed for these jobs are taught in school. What this means is that there are tons of ppl with similar skills therefore pay is lower.

Those specialised in certain areas like data storage, info security, virtualisation, etc.... are paid DAMN WELL! As mentioned above some ppl i know are paid up to 20k a month. On top of that they usually have transport allowance as they visit customers' data centres all the time, plus OT allowance too as customers usually schedule IT downtime at funny hours like sunday 12am to minimise distruption to operations.

Career progression is avaliable within IT. But very often it's the engineers who don't want to get promoted even when offered as they may end up with less $$$. For eg, become manager no need work on Sunday = no more OT allowance which can make up 20-25% of their salary.

Also, it is not possible to outsource totally. Govt accounts only allow SGP IC holders to work on their systems.
