I found this on another forum... This seems interesting...

This thread is for discussing (in)famous tales involving the SAF and to discover the truth behind the legends.

Please contribute if you have factual info on the following events. Feel free to add other SAF urban legends to the list as well.

1) Ghost Stories

- Charlie Coy 3 door bunk

This was discussed at length at SB many years ago. Can anyone find the link?

- No Thursday night training on Tekong

2) Fighting stories

- Recruit shoots officer at Tekong range circa early 90s

Anyone have more info?

- Commandos beat up gangsters in Taiwan

3) Amazing c--k ups

- Soldier sleeping in foxhole buried alive

True/False/Plausible?

- Soldiers digging foxhole unearth coffin

True/False/Plausible?

- Some big shot tested a locally made gun and missed with every round

True/False/Plausible?

4) Personalities

- Tiger Hong

Anyone can provide details of this famous RSM's career?

- Adventures of the elite

Any interesting tales of LHL during NS?

- No Thursday night training on Tekong

This one is FALSE, confirmed.

In my 10 over years of NSF+NSmen life, don't know how many Thursday night trainings I had done on Tekong already. The most recent one was last month during ICT.

Here goes:

two soldiers went r&r at the 'blackmarket'(just the term back then). Due to some misunderstanding, they were whacked hard by the local pai-kiahs.

Went back to camp to report their injury, that's when the story gets interesting.

Apparently the OC was furious upon briefed on what happened. Being a commando (anyone can verify?) himself, he activated the camp's soldiers.

In vest-slack and armed with ET sticks, 10 trucks ready to go into town to sweep the local pai-kiahs. Of course the soldiers knew what they're doing and so does everybody. Just hours after 2 of their men got whacked. I think everybody relish something like this.

When the convoy rolled into town, the soldiers just attack every man they can get to, smash real hard. Estimated number of soldiers, I do not know but 10 trucks, u figure out.

Aftermath of this incident, of course plenty of settlement at high level. That's why starlight soldiers nowadays are banned from going that place by our own. Heard that an artillery exercise in new zealand went awry and killed more than a dozen cows and have to compensate several hundred thousands.

Nothing to authenticate this story but anyone being there will know what I'll talking about.

Cheers.

Yes, the unit involved was 1st CDO battalion.

No, the OC did not know about this incident until AFTER it happened.

The RSM was the one who gave the order..... activated every available soldier in the whole camp.

No firearms were used. Only bayonets and stilettos.

Fyi, the 2 goons who caused the initial trouble were sent to detention.... for being a disgrace to the red berets by kenna whack.

Confirmed 'No Training on Thursday Nights' is definitely a myth. I've been on range, field camp and other maneouvers both during BMT and Unit days which span across Thursday nights. Another debunked urban legend is that vehicles are usually tied with red string during night maneouvers for some spiritual reasons. This is totally untrue.

Another famous Tekong Urban Myth is the Lady on the Jacob's Ladder. Not sure if anyone's encountered anything but personally, I've done Guard Duty prowling past there and have not encountered anything. Of course I won't deny walking past any area in the old Tekong Camp 1 is always a spooky experience. Even before the Jacob's Ladder, there's the empty bunks near the Officers and Specialists quarters which is quite spooky. After the Jacob's Ladder, its the famous 3-door bunk at Charlie Co; followed by the dark tree-covered path at the cookhouse area. But never encountered anything.

TS mentioned a shooting incident at the Range in the 1990s. Our platoon had one such incident, but the fact of the matter was that it did not involve the recruit fatally shooting the OC. What happened was that the recruit fired his weapon as the OC was walking towards him with a couple of specialists to tekan him about his bobo firing. So the recruit set the weapon off when the OC was squatting at the recruit's side. But the recruit went ballistic after that and kept shouting 'I shot the OC!'. Was sedated and sent back to mainland. Nobody knows where he was assigned thereafter. The recruit as I remember him, was what we would call a 'softee' and mummy's boy. Actually, when we first started out PTP prior to BMT, everyone kinda pitied the fella and tried to help him out; But despite all that, I think he pissed his platoon off because he took advantage of the help and still 'khenged' around and the platoon got punished for it. So they used to pull alot of ghost pranks on him - in the bunk and in the wee hours when he showered alone. I guess it came up to a point where he couldn't take it anymore. Not sure if there are other shooting incidents apart from this. This was in Q1 1995.

This might be another incident as yours. Cause my cousin during his active time in the 90s. in his platoon, he got one platoon made who shoot the PC and then turn and commit sucicde at the range. but i am not very sure of the whole incident.

I think that was a different incident. The shooting incidents took part earlier circa 1992. I was a recruit too during that time. There were 2 incidents which stood out for their seriousness and subsequent aftermath. During that time Tekong was still considered 'no man's land', the instructors were king and the camp CO was a non believing guy and didn't allow offerings or prayers for you know what. As follows:

1) In my recruit platoon, we too had a mummy's boy type except that he was really trying very hard to fit in and all of us were also trying hard to help him in his training and overall outlook. Nevetheless, he found the going pretty tough and had a rough time trying to learn. Anyway at the last shoot of BMT, my platoon mate was the fella who left a round in the chamber of his M16 and accidentally shot another recruit while forming up at the 100m range. He had left a round in after getting an IA for his last 300m run. For no apparent reason he squeezed trigger marching to the butt. The guy who was shot was lucky to survive as it was point blank but crippled for life. Thank goodness for FAD. The recruit who shot him was charged with negligence. Both discharged from Army. I confirm as I had to be witness for the trial. Following this incidents, safety directive was passed where IA and clearing of rifles was done without magazines to prevent accidental chambering of rounds as it was concluded that the round was in the magazine when he cocked, check clear his rifle.

2) Incident 2 took place one month after that. This I heard from the investigating officer while attending to the first incident. There was a recruit who was not allowed to return home for the weekend as it was his turn for guard duty. Even though his grandmother passed away and he wanted to attend her funeral but was not allowed by the duty officer. Worse still was the officer went and tekan the guards later by turning them out many times during the night. During the next range shoot, the recruit intentionally kept missing so as to get the officers attention. He turned the m16 at the officer and was threatening to shoot. The 'garang' officer tried to talk him out of it by going closer but was shot in the chest as he approached. The guy then blew his brains out next. That's all I know.

Damned, Im from Delta company in Tekong camp 1 in 1990s & I cant remember much..

I remember that infamous bunk has been changed to Recruits mess. My bunk was just next to it.

It is definitely scary to prowl in Tekong at nite, esp when there are so many old dilapitated structure around like an underground tunnel which i did not dare to explore. Jaacob ladder, me & my prowling buddy even climb up at nite..nothing happen.

Then also the wild boars when they move at nite in the vegetation, look like T-rex moving in Jurassic park. Even trees shake, so scary.

No pork, i tink its true.
