GoodCar 4th Gear April 27, 2010 Share April 27, 2010 I against the idea of lowering the standard of mother tongue even further. Why are we doing this just because a small group of student did not fair well in the language?. Our standard of monther tongue already very low, if we continue like this our futher generation will all be rootless. Language is the key to a culture, Being bilingual allow people to read wider. Just my 2 cents worth ↡ Advertisement
Chewbacca 1st Gear April 27, 2010 Share April 27, 2010 Strongly against. "Hey, my kid is not good in maths/science/history/geography, can we lower the weight?" Yeah, sure. Might as well make PSLE worthless, yeah? That's the point of a test. You're not good? You get screwed. What makes you think you're above this? Get screwed like the rest of us. RH1667 Hypersonic April 27, 2010 Share April 27, 2010 I agree with your view. One of the main advantage of Singaporean is our ability to communicate in English and Chinese ( at least for the chinese here ), some families are already not speaking chinese or dialect at home, if they drop the standard / requirement further, than in future our next generation will be like other foreigner in China.....learn Chinese when they are adult? Or like MY Chinese ( some of those that i know ) ? can speak malay and ENglish but not Chinese?
Joseph22 Turbocharged April 27, 2010 Share April 27, 2010 Instead of reducing the standing of MT, why not just increase the standing of Match and Science. Make it 25% each. Reducing the weight of MT just show that Singaporean are weak.
Tedlhw 5th Gear April 27, 2010 Share April 27, 2010 Strongly against as well. Its like saying: Soccer field too long, Singaporeans leg short cannot run fast enough to beat Brazil. Thats why our soccer so KNS. Appeal to FIFA to make the field smaller, so leg short no disadvantage, then we can go World Cup like everyone else. Just my 2 cents worth Is it a small group did not fair well? From talks with colleagues, Student not coping is not a small group. Chinese is not an easy subject.. As of now, most of us we are already effectivelyy billingual. Though we do not excel in chinese, we have already been sent to China for business trips and rather effective. In fact the Chinese in the factory over there are picking English and we communicate in both mixture of english on chinese. I don't think we need a future generation to be well verse in Tang Poetry and Confusius ethics, in order to be sent there for business trip.. Chinese is neccessary, but no need to excel unless want to be in the academic or linguist.

Our school did not teach them in Tang and Confusius, However, we do need our future generation to know how to read and Write and understand good Chinese. Look at those Indo Chinese, most of them cannot write, read nor speak in chinese. You might not need to know chinese very well to work in china, but knowing good chinese does help alot. I just don't want the weightage of chinese to destroy the future of the children who excel in other subjects and just average chinese.. The chinese are adapting. If you got to a MNC company there in China, you'll be surprise that official language is English, presentation done in English, meeting chair by Chinese also conducted in English.. GoodCar 4th Gear April 27, 2010 Author Share April 27, 2010 There are a lot of wisdom in Chinese classic, by denying that language, we have just closed the door to 5000 years of wisdom. In the future, our next generation will all become rootless and totally westenise. Value, religion, outlook etc because only know English. I am not saying western culture is no good, there are also a lot of good stuff in western value, religion and culture. It is always good to know another language or even dialect. Tonyhawk 1st Gear April 27, 2010 Share April 27, 2010 its a bit extreme to think of it as closing doors, denying 5000 years of wisdom... nobody say drop chinese mah. its just a relaxation of requirements for secondary school entry, have to give chance to the few elite who's chinese is not so good. Ender Hypersonic April 27, 2010 Share April 27, 2010 (edited) I don't deny and agree it's good to know another language. It's not as if that chinese language is dying in singapore. If anything, the speak chinese campaign is highly effective. Go to any shops and chance are we are asking the price or conversing in chinese. And TCS 8 is more viewed than TCS 5. Not everyone are meant to be a scholar. And bright chinese student will always get recognise, just don't penalise or destroy the future of the marginal, average chinese student just so to stream out the top chinese scholars.. Who's knows, these marginal student in chinese could potentially be Math or science scholar if only we don't weigh them down with chinese.. Benarsenal Turbocharged April 27, 2010 Share April 27, 2010 "Singapore isn't a Western society. It isn't an Asian society. It is a cosmopolitan society." - Walter Woon (former Attorny-General of Singapore) One of the characteristics of Singapore is that we are basically a 'mixed' society, neither here or there. Learning both English and an Asian language marks ourselves out from other countries, and we have the advantage of being a 'bridge' or 'connector' between Asia and the West. We shouldn't burn one bridge in sacrifice for another.
GoodCar 4th Gear April 27, 2010 Author Share April 27, 2010 (edited) Yes, a lot of people can speak the language on the street, but they cannot communicate properly when serious topic are discussed. The standard are really down the drain. Even Malaysia chinese standard is higher and the dialect is still alive. Zyrofillica 1st Gear April 27, 2010 Share April 27, 2010 is the weightage still 100 for both english and mother tongue and 50 for both maths and science? total of 300 points? lol im still so sour about psle. I got D for psle chinese but still got 250pts. imagine if weightage was 25% each, maybe i go elite sch, go elite uni, become elite adult then finally become elite MCFer! Like you said, its only adequate. If you lower the weightage, its a slippery slope. Why not get rid of it all together and make it a Moral Education kinda subject? Study for fun? This thought to me is quite ridiculous. Like my earlier example, do we request for the soccer field or tennis court to be shrunk because asians have smaller frames? ↡ Advertisement
